Where did you get those numbers? You're correct about the 18" pizza having more area, but 18^2*pi=1017 in^2 and 2*12^2*pi=904 in^2.

A general rule is divide the number of people in 2, then add one extra pizza. So for 6 people, you get 4 pizzas
