#3 Holy shit I've never felt more seen. I'm currently trying to go back to school because I hate my job, my boss, my co-workers, etc. so much, I've tuned out completely to the point I'm paranoid they going to figure out I basically do fuck all at this point, but I just took on a project I really, really don't want to manage because it'll be some semblance of armor against scrutiny.

I watch YouTube videos all day at work. Literally. I get 5/5 on my evals and my company loves me. I'm terrified every single day that I'll be fired...but I literally don't have anything to do. I'm the only person on site in my job position and nobody else has any idea what my job duties are/what my position means. It's wild. And stressful.

#1 so many companies are forcing people back to office. I wish people fought more rather than say "yes, master.". It's like we learned nothing from the covid era. Of course double standards do exist, so if the employer wants you to work from home (office space issues) wfh is good again.

Shit like this is exactly why I became a falconer after 20+ years in the restaurant business. Life is too short to do something you hate. I fully appreciate how privileged that sounds, and I feel very fortunate to have been able to pursue something I love, and not just scramble to make ends meet. It was a lot of work to get here though. I gambled on myself and won.

The way consultancies work these days... You hire a consultant from a big firm. They look at a process. Tell you how they can make it better, BUT they need to bring in their team to do it. You agree. They now own that, and inevitably are charging you shit tons more to do the same thing while having twice as many people from their consultancy billing you for doing it. Then they look for other "opportunities" to do same. Eventually your company is a husk that the consultancy has parasited.

I genuinely love my job and enjoy working with my coworkers. My boss is incredible and my team is great. Even my CEO is really involved and asks thoughtful questions during meetings, though she did startle me the other day when she asked what I would need in order to make my work easier.

Christ, I can't even imagine what that would be like. I took four days in a row once, and ran it into a holiday weekend so I'd have the full week off. Not only was it like coming back after the Blitz, the vibe I got was that I was in very real danger of losing my job for "abandoning" my post for so long. Despite having had the days approved months beforehand, and taking a week that was guaranteed to be one of the least busy of the year.

... That is such a toxic work culture holy shit. I'd advise you to get the hell out but in the current job market having any job at all is an achievement.
It's the responsibility of the ones approving the holidays and overseeing worker planning to ensure there is no gaps. This is not difficult, all you do is make one of those timestamp graph things per department and mark worker presence. If you only have the 1 expert that is the only one able to do a thing, then the company is doing it wrong.

Yeah, it's basically the last line. Downsizing and non-replacement gradually led to me being the only person doing "things" for multiple departments. I have begged for another worker to be trained, but management always finds an excuse. So when I'm out, certain functions of the departments are just non-existent. But now management is complaining that I don't take enough time off and it looks bad at headquarters. There is literally no way to win.

My job isn't a particularly skilled one, it's where you can get by just with basic experience, but we are about to lose one of our skilled employees cause the boss wasn't on board with him getting an engineering degree, because he wanted (unpaid) time off for that. So now the guy is leaving at the end of the month, and the starter meant to replace him already got fired (absent too often during trial period or some stuff). We've got just over 2 weeks and nobody has been hired to replace him.

My company has "unlimited time off." I took a total of 6 weeks throughout last year (I've been with them 16 years) and got a talking to the beginning of this year asking me to keep it "around 4 weeks." USA baby!

Having 35 days/year (7 weeks) can also save max 5 weeks for 5 years. So year 6 it's possible to have 7+5 weeks. And if you have children you can have alot of weeks extra bit that's another story....
