Same here and I paid for it, because I know it'll only get worse from here on out. RAM manufacturers are pretty open about the fact that prices will be continuing to climb even after 2030. These 64 gigs will have to last me until well into the 2030s.

Actually doable with phones that support a desktop mode, interestingly. Higher-end Samsungs have this feature, among others. Actually quite useful on the go. I used to always carry a docking station and a foldable keyboard and mouse with me so that I could turn any screen into a computer. I even programmed and ran light sever applications on my phone and tablet.

For as much hate as it's getting, it's quite an interesting piece of software, especially for older games. I tried it with Kingdom Come Deliverance 1 and the way it makes faces genuinely photorealistic (until they animate at least) is quite impressive. It also adds missing ambient occlusion for even the tiniest details. Compared to early showcases, it's actually quite subtle now, with none of the "instagram filter" effect we were fearing. Kind of like a combined texture pack and lighting mod.

I don't really see a point in using it to be honest because
1. Nvidia is using it as a marketing pitch for AI.
2. For older titles it's more noticeable but for software that's being pushed for the latest titles the FPS drop and power usage is substantial.
3. There are other options with modding like lighting and texture packs which can improve older games without the AI bloated software that's pretty much only usable with the 5090 on newer titles especially if you are using higher resolutions.

The only title I've used it for doesn't have these kinds of mods, like most older games. Complex mods are quite rare outside of Bethesda RPGs. I should add that I "only" have an RTX 4070 Ti Super, not a 5090. Not a cheap card, admittedly (although it was much cheaper when I bought it last year), but not used car money either. It's definitely usable on cards way below the 5090 (mid-range 40 series and up), as long as you have a high enough frame rate to absorb the performance cost.

That said, the performance penalty is heavy, even on a fast card and it actually increases the uncanny valley effect quite noticeably. I can totally see why people don't like it. Then there's the ethical/artistic intent angle, of course - but fan-made texture packs were already ignoring these issues decades ago, so in that sense, this is nothing new. I remember gaudy texture packs and questionable models for Morrowind, for example, neither of which gave a damn about artistry, taste or morals.

During COVID I got REALLY into building computers.
I built a work PC with a better CPU all blacked out. And a gaming PC with everything RGB.
I ended up disabling all the RGB and then swapped my GPU into the work PC. The RGB stuff runs warmer and not as quiet. It looks cool, but at the end of the day, I'd rather have the performance.

This actually used to be codified by Intel. When they tried to force the industry to RAMBUS, RAMBUS required all slots populated - so empty slots needed a filler card to complete the circuit, and you had to pay for those.

CRIMMs were electronically necessary; these RGB modules are purely aesthetic/cosmetic. Also ISTR that pairs of CRIMMs were included with the 820- and 850-based mobos that my company used. IDR handling them as a separate line item. At that time, we were among the largest whitebox OEMs in the US.

The other thing is often dual slot is more steady for overclock'ing the ram (even built in profiles) so if you used 4 dimms you might have trouble running them at "full speed" (as they advertise the built in overclock speed, naturally).
Only came across this once, and it was for a machine where memory volume was more important than speed anyways (as it wasn't for gaming, only had a 4060 in it and that was mostly for video transcoding), other rigs have been fine, but, it is a thing.

in my case I got a lighting kit with those filler sticks because DDR5 doesn't play nice with 4 sticks and the aesthetic look of having all 4 slots filled is really nice, especially if your case is a display piece. but they weren't anywhere near this expensive when I got mine. lol

Real upgrades have been plateauing for awhile, so there seems to have been a push to turn PCs into seizure inducing RBG light shows. A lot of RAM sticks have RGB lighting, and these are to fill the empty slots purely for aesthetics and complete the light bomb.

Ok as a truck driver actual true dekotora culture here would be SO COOL. Even in the heyday of paper logs and pearl buttons we never really got true over the top dekotora, the Japanese have *absolutely* one upped us in that regard. We had, and still have, some decently spiffy rides, yes, but chrome on a square nose is nothing like BLINKING GLOWING MOVING AMAZEMENT with a fukin musical horn. It just doesn't even slightly compare.

I had to buy a keyboard recently & the only keyboard I could find in my price range has forced RGB lights under the buttons. At least I can make it a solid color which has proven useful but everytime my PC restarts I have to change it back to a solid color or I get the dang color bomb for my eyes.

Mine remembers the color setting, for the most part. After one PC crash, it had forgotten its setting, switching to wildly pulsing on and off (making the light near useless in the dark) and I wasn't able to find the key combination thanks to the searchpocalypse. I was upset for weeks until I figured out the five button key combination to change it to just white.

I set my most recent PC up with it when I built it. Never had before, but the pricing and setup have become much more accessible in the last 5-10 years, and I like colorful/shiny things.
You'd be surprised how quickly you get used to it lol. Mostly now I appreciate it as a night light for the living room.

Sounds like you cheaped out a bit too much. I spent $50 on a Logitech G604 four years ago and it has no lights and works very well on top of being customizable with weights and an app to change sensitivity settings.

When I was upgrading my PC a few years back, the RAM with RGBs was like 30% cheaper than than the exact same model without RGBs. Literally the only difference between the two was that one had RGBs and one didn't. Ended up buying them since they were cheaper, and just disabled the RGBs to not deal with the light.

I remember my first GPU with lighting. It was a GTX 1080 (now proudly soldiering on in a friend's PC). It has a teeny tiny lit up GTX badge on the side. I was annoyed beyond belief and ended up covering up a useless side exhaust vent on my PC so that I didn't have to look at this distracting light coming from the machine. My views on RGB lighting haven't changed since. When I bought my first new case in over 20 years, I insisted on one without a pointless side window.

But today if the cheapest way for you to get the ram you need is buying 2 sticks instead of 4 then these can be a good filler.

sadly that can have draw backs. Many mem controllers actually struggle with all 4 dimm slots filled. Its weird because Im like you, I want to fill it but cannot. So I just bought the largest gb per dimm modules I could. Sadly, this too has the mem controller struggling. Sigh

Meh. Mine runs just fine. I've never had this problem with the 10+ rigs I've built over the years. Not saying it's not an issue. Just that I've never encountered it. When I install more RAM, I just end up getting more RAM and that's it.
