Fallout 4 storyline was a bit disappointing.

Fallout 4 = grat story... Where? :|

Tetris
ViveLaBalloonAnimals
You forgot Mass Effect
Meatspinner
Illusive Man is one of my alltime favourite ...well, let's not spoil it.
CapnReach
I'm commander Sheppard, and this is my favourite comment on this point
Iceblade09
You did good son, I'm... proud of you.
TheThunderbirdRising
Hell, ME3 even has great multiplayer too
Tinglyflame
It was the perfect example of simple and sweet IMO
JohnnyTheBlade
Had to be Mass Effect, someone else might have gotten it wrong
Laubby
ooh... got the feels right there. The worst was when I tried the renegade option and killed Moridin, I felt so fucking guilty.
ExaltedAnt
I may get hate for this but Fo4 does not belong on this list imo.
failphins2
Should have had Mass Effect instead
Kangarou
It does not. Bethesda is to stories what Ubisoft is to customer service.
rezpawner
After they lost Ken Rolston, it all went downhill.
everettscott
Fallout 3: WHERES MY DAD. Fallout 4: GIVE ME BACK MY SON. Wonder what's next.
DukeDark
LET ME BANG MY COUSIN.
Bonerhitler
Fallout 5: I AM MY OWN SON
Fallout 6: WHO WAS PHONE
OMFG. RAIDERS STOLE MY SIGNIFICANT OTHER!
Finding her parents of course, just like Finding Dory
TheFoxCouncil
Fallout NV: Someone shot me in the head. I'm gonna kill that son of a bitch.
IDontWantFOPgoddamnit
Or, alternatively, "Someone shot me in the head... I'm gonna sleep with that son of a bitch."
deltajesus
Fallout NV: Someone shot me in the head. I'm gonna do literally whatever the fuck I want.
To be fair, I liked New Vegas more. I just don't think the Fallout Bethesda writing team does anything really interesting.
Oh, I definitely liked New Vegas more. I agree entirely.
BAKEDFRY
Red dead was one my favorites
TinyCactusss
Came here to say this. RDR is still my favorite game of all time. I have yet to find some thing to top it although Last of Us came close
fartmagizewarth09
Im sorry but I do not understand this, Last of us is ok some pretty good atmosphere and world building but its story wasnt much.
Ragnarok1030
Witcher 3 is one of my all time favorite games because of the story/ how in depth the game really is. It's the perfect length for a game
Osarphi
I dunno. If i spend 160+ hours per game to finish it correctly once, i'm gonna need more time. Like30 hours per 24 hours. Would be great tho
purebordem
Skyrim has great little side stories, bigger stories were meh
fuckyouandyourwittyusername
I thought the stories were great during, but had terrible endings. A civil war ended by a couple small battles and Alduin was an easy kill.

Great game. Fun with zombies, too.
FajitaPrinceofAllMexicans
Yeah, you ever know there's a cheating easy mode I found?
No. But, why cheat. Get the blunderbus and kickass!
Because it was just kinda funny, but yeah I do stick to the way it's supposed to play.
Okay, tell me about it.
LegoStomper
Awesome multiplayer experience as well. Cept for all of the ballerina spinners.
DrSirTookTookIII
Haha, damn 360's were the bane of my existence back then.
now thats a true masterpiece of story in gaming
pataglop
When is this game coming to PC again?
killerkoala82
never
Blackd0nuts
I just dropped a tear. Come on sequel!!
trentinho
All time favorite story line in a game. My hopes are extremely high for the sequel I assume is coming next fall
do you have any proof of that? not being argumentative, genuinely curious cuz i thought they were announces it at E3 this year but nope.
Just an article I caught a few weeks back suggesting that a sequel was in the works for release with project Scorpio next year
god i hope thats true
It's hard to imagine what they would do though. A sequel would be hard given the time period rdr ends in
SomeCanadianGuyEh
I love the story, spent hours in singleplayer, played the hell out of the multiplayer then they add zombies to it just make it even better <3.
Irishda
Come get me when they remake red dead revolver instead
...why? I mean it was good, but Redemption was about 10x better.
Redemption was a sandbox. People like sandboxes. But there characters, dialogue, and plot were all 10x worse
Redemption: "You're pretty quiet mister." "WELL THAT'S A FUNNY STORY LEMME PROCEED TO NOT SHUT THE FUCK UP FOR THE NEXT TEN MINUTES!"
DontTazeMeBrah
Halo 1 + 2 tho

Halo 3 was great too!

speak for yourself. I think teabagging the AI is more fun because...I can't do it to real people due to being a super noob

What if the AI tea bags you? Nevermind, might be too much for an AI.

Obviously we need an AI that responds to it.

Why fallout 4?
iwastheoneonce
you got some fallout 4 in your good point.
Broseidon88
Witcher 3 is hands down the best game I have ever played. Stories are what make games memorable, not teabagging PvP...
DapperBlook
I uh... don't much "care" for Witcher 3? It felt..... Exceedingly heavy. Like the gameplay always had a EOD suit on.
BlankMage
It certainly wasn't the fastest paced, but on harder difficulty it was definitely a pleasant challenge, since it wasn't what i was used to.
Absolutely! It was a GOOD game. Fantastic even! It was just not my cup of tea, you know.
Similar to my opinion on Alien Isolation, really beautiful, wonderfully atmospheric but I just got so fucking bored.
thefucksnotgiven
For me...yeah I'd go with W3, before that it was Half Life 2.
kaamila
I'm the only one who didn't like the game. The voice acting seemed so robotic and scripted it bored me. Too used to gta, BL2 acting I guess.
bitticlan
To me it felt like there were too many barriers I had to get through just to move on. I couldn't enjoy the game until I did 7 things first.
See that's really good and all...but Super Metroid is the best for me. And all with like 5 written lines in it. so so soo good
KingdomKarts
Entirely subjective. A lot of games are memorable for multiplayer. Not to mention the eSports side of things.
By definition, the whole post and the comments are subjective.
I'm aware. I just think people need to realize that multiplayer is not a problem, phoned it multiplayer for no reason is. 1/2
Some of my greatest gaming memories are from games like Smash Bros., Mario Kart, sports games, and Assassin's Creed online play.
MinnesotaMathew
do I need to play the first 2 before I play 3?
The first one aged pretty badly. It's nice for introducing the character(S) and context but the 3's plot stands by itself
theTenderOne
Nah, but play both.
krapmyself
Skyrim and fallout had great stories?
corvettee01
Dark Souls.
wfwood
i know right?
Tofubutton
Great story, fun combat, addicting pvp! Can't go wrong. It's an amazing series that can be played solo or online.
GalaxyRangerZero
200 hours. Haven't beat it. Bloodborne was incredibly rewarding. Awesome games
AwkwardKyle
I need to hop back on my gimmick co-op profile on 3.
TheIrishMike
Why not both like Goldeneye 64
squirreltactics
One of the greatest games ever made.
BurningChef
True
Deadpoolio7
Or, yknow, The Last of Us. Amazing story with a surprisingly decent and addictive multiplayer. Actually one of the best in recent years.
Yeahnoibet
I loved the storyline, so good. It was like playing a movie. I didn't know there's a multiplayer option, is it good?
How on earth did you miss that on the main menu haha. Yeah, it's amazing. Stealthy, teamwork and tense as shit. It was fantastic
TheDTYP
Deus Ex. Play it. Also sidenote, if rather they fleshed out the gameplay and story of Mass Effect 3 than added multiplayer
PaleJr
Tends to happen when you're bought by EA, though. I'd be hard pressed to name an IP EA acquired that didn't later have multiplayer added.
The multiplayer in Mass Effect 3 was great though. And fed nicely into the story.
ozzycats
Agreed, im probably one of the few people still playinf the multiplayer
LittleTinyFluffyBunny
Speaking of Deus Ex... MANKIND DIVIDED HYPE REACHING CRITICAL LEVELS! It's so close!!! D:
iwantedorangeitgavemelemonlime
Damn you!! Now I have to install it again.

If you play games for story, than Fallout 4 and Skyrim are poor examples. As beautiful as the ocean, but the depth of a pond.
But muh Shawn! I need muh Shawn. Where is Shaw-OH look a bottlecap!

"As beautiful as the ocean, but the depth of a pond." Thanks sir, i am gonna use that later.
IWRITEEVERYTHINGINCAPS
HEH, IT HAS BEEN USED TO DESCRIBE SKYRIM FOR YEARS. BUT IT'S USUALLY "WIDE AS AN OCEAN, DEEP AS A PUDDLE".
Never heard it before, but thanks for the info. Also, would you stop screaming ?
I'M NOT SCREAMING. YOU'RE WHISPERING.
Dear gods, you need help. How can you even hear me ?
I know, but puddle felt a bit hyperbolic; there is *some* depth to those games -- just not much... Maybe puddle is more accurate actually.
Th3On3Tru3G0d
Witcher 3 won a special place in my heart
Mrcartoon
For me as well
nioman86
Played through all 3 witcher games this year. What an amazing trilogy. Makes me sad that games like that are so rare.
Yep. Even moreso because i red all the books, and play witcher 1&2 before. Oh, the feels when the story filled and tided it all together !
StayClassyPonyBoy
Yes yes, so good
TheMightyWitcher
Agreed
Moonsugarlily
DansGaming has some of the funniest Witcher 3 Let's Play clips~ https://youtu.be/3Y52zKKoHn4?t=1m My husband & I love Lirik & Dan the best❤
I played it after finishing TW3, its fun to see some characters you met/heard about in the 3, and it just deepens your immersion in>
The witcher universe
FuckoTheClown
No. Waste of money. the first two are nowhere near as good. the second one's story isn't even that great. watch a youtube synopsis.
FartLongerNotHarder
Won't that spoil it? I'm actually downloading 3 now. I'm pretty sick of multiplayer games and getting owned by Asian kids
no, watch a synopsis of the first two. you don't super need to but if you want some background for the world it's nice. doesn't spoil 3
Zatary
Before I played 3, I couldn't bring myself to skip any games in a series. Best gaming choice of my life. Wirth it if you want the story
I've played number 1 but that was years ago
i only just started 3 but from what i've heard you do not need to know anything from previous games, but I like knowing the world.
ConnorQuinn
I just finished it today. I almost cried at the ending I got.
ktkutthroat
I was so pissed at the original ending I got I went all the way back to the Isle of Mists save and replayed the game out.
Have you played Blood and Wine? Honestly I cried almost more than the base games ending because it felt like Geralt was saying goodbye to us
Fialovich
lalaarawr
Goddamn it now i want tacos... Well more so
Taskforcem85
Would you rather spend all of your development money on a writing staff that stays with you or a dev team? It's rare you have money for both
You can play two games, you know.
lumpypumpkin
In theory this would be best, but all too often the story is sacrificed or butchered for more online multiplayer content.
What i meant is you dont have to play just one game.
Velitaris
Ultima online was amazing til EA got their mits on it. sandbox MMO, the players drove the storyline with their own actions. And then, EA.
zepeachez
Fallout 4 and skyrim are poor examples of games with great stories. Js
LILTHIEF
Skyrim still follows up with TES lore
epicnessity
That was my first thought too. Definitely not prime examples.
MalkavianProstitute
Yeah....Skyrim was incredible *in spite* of the storytelling not because of.
Argmenite
Mass effects. 1, 2, 3 (except ending).
WhileYouWereReadingThisLongNameIstoleYourCookies
Skyrim was focking great, fallout 4 was the special needs child
asanimgurianiliealot
Compared to Oblivion, Skyrim's stories were pretty unconvincing.
stalinomatic
Skyrim has great lore and a well established world; it gets familiarity points. The gameplay is what makes it great. Story in it is fine.
doodybird
The only thing bethesda does right is marketing.
fufuwewe
Not if you count mods and side quests. Main story though pretty much always sucks in Bethesda games.
ImgurPhantomBlockedMyOtherAccount
*Coff* Dishonored *coff*
you mean the story that decides if the world gets plagued because you as an assassin killed people...
yes
JohnJacobJingleHeimerSmitt
Nah man, all the guilds and mainquests in oblivion were grade A. They really fell short in skyrim
I quite enjoyed the dark brotherhood stuff in Skyrim.
LapisScarab
I thought the Fighter's Guild in both were lame and Skyrim's Mage's Guild was way more interesting. Oblivion won the others though.
Skyrim is a great vehicle for role playing and telling your own stories I think. And a lot of the side stories were really good.
naujkun
What roleplaying? Do i want to do this or do i want to do it later? :V
Cheomesh
Until that fuckin' 99th dagr0n comes to annoy you.
GregorCorgane
Then you make a whole other character and find out that dragons don't spawn if you never start the whiterun quests... Then it's perfect.
:o rly??
The main story in Skyrim wasn't even "bad" it was just generic.
The worst thing about it, is just how little the storylines worked together, or even with the game as a whole.
I thought it actually was pretty epic and fun to do, it's just less interesting than the other quests and entirely optional.
The civil war existed in its own little pocket timeline and could be removed from the game with little to no issue.
The dragons were interesting at first but quickly got repetitive and the storyline felt less interesting than Oblivion's while still similar
bemanresu
If you want great stories why are you playing Fallout 4? Interior decorating games don't have stories
contrabille
Yeah that game was a waste of money. Sorry.
sinistermoo
Or skyrim..
DickDastardly404
are you kidding me? It might not be the greatest fallout game, but it's still packed with little pockets of storytelling, man
xaviouswolffe
So much this. If you take the time to explore there are some truly heart wrenching stories of families separated when the bombs dropped. ①
And that's what really got me, in a hospital there was a holotape from a woman to her husband talking about how bad it was. Going to some ②
village you could find a terminal and another holotape left by the husband about how he and their boys wanted to see her again ③
I think I remember the one about the the boys and the father hiding out in the bunker. Pretty heart wrenching.
Game: frozen girl saves son! Me: frozen girl falls in love with a mick druggie, becomes trade queen, unites all settlements. Peace reigns.
thundagunned
But another settlement needs your help!
Gawky
try playing without the minute men, its so much more fun
I did i never rescue preston/no minutte men, that was a great fun story
TheHypocrite
What if the OC meant whole series, same with TES. There are weaker pieces among them but most of them had solid storytelling.
I liked Fallout 4. Kinda disappointed with how short it was..even with the DLCs..but I still enjoyed it
PascalsBookie
i've played the hell out of the game, it looks nice, but failed where it counts. building is addictive, but ultimately not fun. just work
my biggest problem is that i don't care for any of the weapons, and the enchantments for items actually ruins it a little- exploding shotgun
I can see your point, I could have done without the extensive building. Maybe replace it with more side quests..?
I fucking hated most of the weapon designs, and the lack of proper uniques other than the pistol was hugely disappointing.
I just miss the assault carbine. It was so satisfying. The survival rifle and light in the darkness too. But mostly assault carbine's sound
ProfessionalArceus
I thought the whole finding your son thing was good. Especially the when you actually get inside the institute, so many feels.
D3aek
I didn't really have that many feels, I just power fisted my son the first chance I got because he was a little shit.
I agree if you're talking about kid Shaun. Adult Shaun made me want hug him.
I had 0 emotional attachment to him, you see him in a crib for like 2 minutes at the start of the game and that's most of your interactions.
3point141592653589793238462643383279502884197169399375105
I really didn't like the fallout 4 story. It was probably my fault though, I was far too hyped for a game I knew nothing about
pyth151
Fallout 4 a great story? Laff
ThatGuyWhoThinksEveryoneIsAPineapple
Oh come on, nobody plays a fallout game for the main plot. What makes the franchise so great are the characters and side quests.
Yeah fo4 side quests were amazing. Shit wait I gotta go save another village from ghouls
Makinan
Shit, they should have put D00M '16 in there. It's SO BADASS. A berserker packin' man and a half, a 12 on a ten point scale of badness!
LordxGodxKing
fallout NV was the best
darkconsole
the main quest is never the story with bethesda. you have to randomly wander for an additional 500 gameplay hours to piece it together.
Then you have to stop because every quest line is broken and none of the NPCs are spawning where they should anymore.
parla
I like the Fallout 4 story.
I'm sorry about your brain damage.
Says the weaboo.
Anime may be shit, but it's still better than fallout 4's story.
DisgruntledLimey
Same
Burritoheart
So did I, but it was good not great IMO
ghostie808
Hmm story is ok. But the setting and atmosphere they create is what we love (The early 1900's vibe+ music)
MisterRobot
I'd hardly call the 1950's style "early 1900's", but yeah, the setting is what makes fallout
Bearilla
The dialogue sucked ASS
If it's open world they all suck ass . Playing no man sky right now and it's so bad . Games good though
NeatGif
no man's sky is garbage, even the creator said it wouldn't be fun in an interview
Getting hugely repetitive. But everyone wants to Know what happens in the centre of the universe
CountEjacula
I'm actually pretty offended they've grouped it with Witcher 3 and Last of Us
BigBlueBurd
I'm pretty offended the Last of Us is in that list. The only good story in there is the Witcher really.
Joestopbeinggay
Please shut the fuck up
Fallout 4 was a joke, I'm not a huge like min/max guy for RPGs (il toy with it a bit, get in depth occasionally) BUT IT WAS SO DAMN BASIC1/2
Plus it's story was easily the worst in the series, with its only strength being right at the beginning, and it looses all momentum so fast.
geoflame1
yah The dlc story was better than the main one
AsAnEverythingCanConfirm
That's for damn sure
Radix865
That's pretty much the story of every Bethesda game all the way from Morrowind...unless you're talking about LoU or W3?
yourmomisminenow
The vault dlc had a better storyline.
fileiddiz
Witcher 3 has a story on par with Last of Us? Sounds like I need to play Witcher.
tulkusrunner
Witcher has the greatest story, also because the last 2 games and the established books. I felt Last of us was more of an emotional ride 1/
zorock
The Witcher 3 story isn't so great by itself, but if you play the first and 2nd game too, it is. Overall an amazing game though
than a great story although most wouldnt have those different, i find it hard to explain
InsertCleverandOriginalUsernameHere
Its one of the best games ever
I would not hesitate to say it's the best RPG I've ever played.
KillerDiabeetus
You absolutely need to play witcher sooooo goooood.
FarneseDeVandimion
should I play the other 2 witcher games beforehand or is it a standalone kind of game
Maybe not as 'well written' per se theme-wise, but it's a lot longer and entertaining all the way through, 80-ish hours of fun at minimum.
I meant the main story isn't as complex and deep as TLOU, it's still great, and Witcher 3 is my favourite game of all time. Stop hating pls.
The dlc stories alone are worth getting the game. The main story... Jesus. I felt like I lost my will to live when I finished it...
I just sat there thinking: "what now?"
imgurgud
Along with Skyrim.
C0mtraya
Wouldn't say Skyrim had a bad story (actually quite interesting imo). They just failed at presentation/implementation of the story.
nahclluf
There wasn't anything wrong with the story was there? The game focused on gameplay and player choice, as it should.
Still all of the three storylines (alduin, harkon, miraak) were quite enjoyable but no match for Witcher 3.
adam1111
Get the fuck out.
ChrisCarTheMarauder
I'm sorry you were 14 at the time and Skyrim was your first RPG, I really and truly am
Get over yourself you smug little gobshite, I was playing RPGs when you were still sucking your mother's tits.
TheGreatRadioControversy
"smug little gobshite" is now my go to insult.
So which was it, shit taste from the start or did it come slowly with old age?
TheBirdBrain23
There's dragons, racist assholes, and more racist assholes. Skyrim's main story in a nutshell.
Chum3
"You'll make a nice rug"
FiddlerofFate
I would have wanted to put Fallout New Vegas there instead, however even though Fallout New Vegas is my favorite game I do not think it (1)
NoMarkDaye
Most underrated part of NV is that you could LITERALLY shoot everything you met in the face and not break the game. Amazing writing.
finnforfun
New Vegas was one of a kind, I wish they made a sequel.
Really? I'd put it behind 3 and 4. There was no drive to do anything. Just a bunch of disconnected stuff.
Dead Money tho. Best fallout story of the modern games.
Not trying to disrespect your opinion though
Thanks. Most people down vote at any sign of an opinion of F4 or FNV that isn't their own.
Ah no problem it is good to keep an open mind
It felt more living in my opinion and the conclusion was a big part of it and tied up loose ends that made it feel like your own story (1)
The clear depth of choice really helped as well. I was dissapointed in Fallout 4 mostly because I was expecting a story like New Vegas (2)
Fallout 4 was fine but the ending and lack of a variety of choices ruined it for me. I could play New Vegas multiple times and get a new (3)
tatischief
As a big fan of Sapkowski, the games and the world toom yes. But FNV storytelling was superb. One of the best choice based games in decades
Obsidian makes good games, Pillars of Eternity was good. They did a good job with South Park Stick of Truth however not my kind of humor.
Is as good as Witcher 3 or Last of Us in terms of story. (2)
Panda4hire
IMO- the Bethesda storylines could use some work. They are mediocre at best and get lost in the grand scope of the game.
baneofthewalrus
I think you're missing the point. Bethesda games are about making your own story within the world. The main story is more like a suggestion.
ellert0
The Morrowind story was pretty great.
GalacticCrunch
The side quests are better than the main quests.
Aerolfoz
Not in Skyrim. Too repetitive and boring... does not feel like an actual story at all, just good old tacked on fetch quest/kill y xs
Replaying Oblivion however.... the side quests are so damn good.
hetriedtokillmewithaforklift
Honestly, I think the story and gameplay in Bethesda games are mediocre to terrible and boring. But the lore is awesome and huge.
WitcherSchoolDropout
I love reading all the books.
are they any good?
Some of them, like the Lusty Argonian Maid, are hilarious
LOl.
dannwyrm
My favorite part of Skyrim was going into a crypt full of Draugrs. Or a cave full of bandits. Then they really change it up with the dwemer!
IgorMihail
Don't you dare talk shit about skyrim
withoutahead
Skyrim's questlines were all pretty bad though, especially compared to previous iterations of TES (where normally only the MQ sucks)
Dude. I just like the dragons.
SlantsDraws
Dragons in skyrim were underwhelming. They were supposed to be the harbringers of the end times and in game a couple farmers can beat them
addledPunster
Alduin's the harbinger. Dragons are just, and have always been just, self important assholes. They were chased out by cliffracers, after all
SleepyWalrus
indeed, the story is more to drive you to new places to see and explore, rather than being enjoyable in itself.
I don't need no story for that son.
indeed, but it is nevertheless a drive to get to new places :3
springlake
Fallout 4 and Skyrim are indeed seriously shitty examples. New Vegas, Fallout 1 and Fallout 2 would have been much better.
Funny enough, New Vegas, Fallout 1 and Fallout 2 were not made Bethesda.
Indeed. But New Vegas at least was published by Bethesda and as such they would have had some poking to do in it.
Bethesda didn't write or do anything for New Vegas except for help Obsidian patch bugs, which New Vegas still had tons of at launch.
Quiveren
I cared more for the companion cube than my family in fallout 4.
CyberJackalope
They have a million pages of lore and 0 characters whom you care whether they live or die.
Selerox
Sometimes, I'd take that over a great story within a game that railroads you.
I liken a game like that to Bioshock. You were being rail-roaded but didn't realize you were until later.
cambot339
I agree. Skyrim in particular had pretty lame main/guild quests
LookingCoolJoker
The dark brotherhood was especially dissapointing for me after the quest line in oblivion
HorseMcFucker
The base games are so-so, but the DLC tends to be amazing. (See; Dead Money, The Divide, Brotherhood of Steel, Dragonborn/Dawnguard.)
Dead Money and The Divide (Lonesome Road) were not made by Bethesda. New Vegas and Fallout 1 and 2 were not made Bethesda either.
Bethesda had their fingers in New Vegas, Broterhood of Steel was Fallout 3, Dragonborn/Dawnguard Is Skyrim, and Fallout 4's DLC good too.
All Bethesda did for New Vegas was allow Obsidian to work on aFallout game, they didn't do any of the writing.
Chimwizlet
Yeah, I was surprised to see them both on there. They're both pretty weak in story, and the quests have been poor in the most recent games.
DatMormon
Side quests are where it's at
Durzaka
Exactly. if anything it should say something like "We don't need massive open worlds. We need tight immersive worlds."
funkinsk8
I'm feeling like BethSoft is becoming a victim of their own success and fan's expectations. Every move has to be bigger and more grand.
Well, that's what they think anyways.
Albertiarp
The stories hold back their games. I just want to go over there and angrily shake my fist at them.
aveyinc
I am finishing off New Vegas for the 1st time. Amazing story lines! I wish obsidian could get their hands on the fo4 platform & make magic!
kaztas
I could never finish Oblivion and Fallout 3. Too expansive
rossalupus
They need obsidian to do the nezt fallout story. WE need obsidian to do the next fallout story...
I'd like to see a remade 1st and 2nd game with more voice acting but still in the isometric view
Koztah
Obsidian 'gets' Fallout better than Bethesda ever did. Probably has to do with the ex-Black Isle staff working there.
slapmychipsup
Fallout 4 new vegas would be awesome
johnvictor
I think we've had a lot of California/NCR story. What I want to know more is a good Fallout game of the midwest BoS. That or what about /1
the southeast of the US.
I've heard a rumour of New Orleans being a contender for next location...
Yeah, and this time with more than 18 months to make it. That's hilariously short for a game of this type...
Obi0juan0kenobi
Honestly it's quite sad watching the dev commentaries and seeing how grand a scope was cut short by the time limit they had.
And even then it's my favourite of the first person fallout games...
Silverforte
Skyrim would have been 100X better if you could have played the entire game exactly as is, but with the option of ONE friend joining you.
Kobalt187
That's all I ever wanted! Just one friend to join alongside me in battle.
I believe an online component like dark souls co-op would have been great. Like summoning a champion from Sovngarde or something
The world and lore are great, the stories you play not so much.
Oh yeah the flavor is amazing. but the whole reason behind the big quest isn't engaging. I blame having too many choices.
cpnbeeb
Fallout 4 took a nice hearty shit all over the established lore. Then their VP handwaved this away via twitter.
CaveCanem
I played "the" story a couple of times, but now I just go into that game for my own story, fuck the quest line. That's the best way to Beth.
CaptainJesusAndTheGodBrigade
The world and lore isn't even good, it used to be in TES apparently, but they're fucking Fallout. It used to be very good.
That's because Emil Pagliarulo can't write stories for shit. (He was the writer for Fallout 3+4 AND Skyrim.)
Oblivion and New Vegas had different writers which is why they are actually good. At least New Vegas, Oblivion is touch and go at times.
TheRealRocknrolla
New Vegas story was fantastic. The only similarity between 4 and NV is "oh shit they liked multiple factions"
BillyMaysHereWithOxiClean
To be fair, New Vegas was developed by a completely different studio.
Xdeddc
They've begun shitting on Fallout's lore. They don't understand it. This is especially troublesome considering that the story was awful.
That began with Fallout 3. Bethesda: "Shit I don't know, just check the wiki page."
I really hope they involve Obsidian in some capacity for any future Fallout projects. Bethesda really dropped the ball with Fallout 4.
ForlornFennec
I could probably stomach all the other changes were it not for them castrating the dialogue system.
I actually didn't have that much of a problem with it. It was the lack of skills or any specialization that upset me.
strangledbyaturtleneck
I really liked Oblivion, Skyrim was kinda blah story wise
Obliv was nice in that we weren't The Chosen One like we saw in Morrowind. Both it and Skyrim had nice worlds. Both had crap stories.
vikingdeath
well at least in morrowind the pre-endgame goal was forcing everyone to acknowledge you as a chosen one in skyrim they handed it to you
And they all sounded so...I dunno, winded?
Exactly. If I'd never played Oblivion I would have though Skyrim was way better. The faction quest lines were awful in comparison. In 1/
DiabolicPenguin
Exactly, I absolutely loved all of oblivion's factions compared to skyrim's
Oblivion you actually felt like a thief, assassin, mage, or fighter. In Skyrim you have thieves spending 99% of their time diving 2/
Through ruins rather than performing elaborate heists, and you kill all the time which is totally off putting.
buckbuckbuckybuck
I don't know, I like the story I create by the decisions I make. I tell my story in those games.
Then I might argue that makes it a creation tool masquerading as a game and not so much a game.
In some of them yeah, but fallout 4 was atrocious in that respect.
ImNotCreativeEnoughForAGoodUsername
I think it's more the stories you create in them. Two people playing the same game can have fulfilling experiences and yet never hit the 1/2
same story points (excluding the "main" ones) ever the entire playthrough. 2/2
Yes but that isn't really compelling storytelling then, it's roleplaying.
...You mean like how it's called an RPG, Role-Playing Game?
but that's not what we are debating we are debating if the main story is compelling.
You mean like in Fallout 4 you can choose the "sarcastic yes" instead of just saying "yes"? Or go wild and say "no" that still ends up "yes"
Not exactly, though I do see where you're going with that. I mean more you can be a fighter, you can get married, you can be a Minutemen or
Brotherhood or all of these things. I think Skyrim might have been a bit better with how many options it had though
Skyrim actually had the problem that nothing ever mattered. The only ones who noticed they were in the presence of Harbinger-Archmage- (1/2)

I'd say the comment was likely just about the Fallout and Elder Scrolls games.

Not developed by bethestda.
JudgeRhymehold
Agreed. Considering how much I still play, can't imagine if it were more than fetch and retrieve quests
I think one of their biggest problems is that they have 10,000 NPCs with about 5 voices.
YouAreNowBlinkingAndBreathingManuallyAndHaveTheSuddenUrgeToYawn
Stephen Fry would've cover about half of those, including little girls and old ladies.
Matthew Mercer could get the other half.
zoomtothemoon
The sad thing is I'm so used to hearing the same comforting, familiar voices that I don't know if I'd want uniquely voiced NPCs everywhere.

What if we all volunteered to voice every npc for free. Like 1 per person.

WilfredPGrundlesnatch
There are ways to not make them repetitive and annoying, as the Witcher 3 has shown.
In the latter case I point to Oblivion. Patrick Stewart voiced the emperor and everyone else sounded the same.
They have a habit of hiring big name voices for characters that they kill off. Patrick Stewart in Oblivion, Liam Neeson in FO3...

For sure. But their ineptitude is even more on-the-nose than that...because so did the original Fallouts.

I have that one, actually. It adds some great NPCS but doesn't do much to improve the existing ones.
unitedhello
Mediocre by video game standards. Shit by any other mediums. I've listened to rap albums with better stories than Fallout 4
DaDisser
I think people like them because they are a "create your own story within this bigger story" style game
Penguinsruletheworld
Fallout 4 was mediocre in story. My god I can't finish the damn game.
TheBigBadBonerBiter
Spoilers in next post because I feel the same way;
1) I had the biggest bitch of a time picking a side because they all have varying amounts of suck; Minutemen suck, Railroad are faggots, BoS
2) are assholes, Institute are dicks. BoS barely nudged out over the others only because you get to rebuild Liberty Prime.
TheGreatAnhey
It was fucking disappointing , I betrayed the railroad and all you got was a "sorry , but not sorry"
Hindenburgh
the story wasnt mediocre, it was just plain bad....
I found my son and said fuck it.

But more seriously - I concur that the game was not what it could have been and replay-ability is damaged greatly.

so the game is worth the money then? ok I buy and make corpse pile.

Which is why I want them to partner with Obsidian again. Beth makes the world and does the bug testing, Obsidian does the writing.
InternationalPhoneticAlphabet
why would BETHESDA do the bug testing? you could argue theyd be good if they actually had the time for it, but i doubt it.
Compared to Obsidian? Bethesda is fine. New Vegas on release was worse than even Morrowind.
huh. guess it show i havent played a completely new game on release since ... i dont think i've ever done that.
New Vegas had the shortest release window, it's also the crappy engine behind a lot of it.
Didn't help Bethesda came in while a lead designer was away, pushed time tables ahead, and said "Meet this or everyone is fired.".
Which Bethesda was actually bug testers for, worth noting. Obsidian DID do internal stuff, because every dev does, but tmu Bethesda was(1)
in charge of bug testing for release. To be fair, my 'tmu' could be wrong.(2)
No partnership. Bethesda sabotages whoever they work with. Happened with New Vegas, it'll happen again.
emileld
The bug testing? Is that a joke?
Compared to Obsidian? I'll take mildly broken to 'LOLLER SKATES BROKEN'.
DarkZalgo
I don't remember FONV being that broken, but I do remember skyrim being unplayable at some points.
LogeeLassleyyy
New Vegas was hit and miss whether you had bugs or not. I personally don't want another pbsidian game because I had game breaking bugs.
Valiton
I have never played an Obsidian game that I enjoyed.

can you imagine how good 2 player coop (split-screen) versions of Skyrim and The Last of Us would be though? I just wanna game with friends.
Do it like diablo or Dead Island. 4 to a map, but use the entire world map. Give/take away some quests for multiplayer. Drop in drop out mp
I loved the Diablo 3 multiplayer. Not sure if the first person would work as well on the same screen but however they can get it to work.
I would easily pay another $50 for each of those games, and it's not like they have to build them from scratch. just sell remakes with coop.
I would love some online coop even if a save was limited to being accessed by the 2 players together in a lobby.
(1/3) I think way more games need splitscreen. There are so many good solo games to get lost in and absorb the world, but being able to...
gameangel147
I agree, but local multiplayer could mean less consoles being sold, which is probably why they've moved away from that.

Come on, it was made by 15 people. The accomplishment of exploration is cool enough.
The fact that people keep hiding behind this is annoying as shit. The Half-Life remake 'Black Mesa' had a small dev team and still released
Yeah remakes aren't as hard as making a game like No Man's Sky.
A solid near bugless game. And what about Minecraft?
Minecraft was made by a Swede = automatically better ;)
i think it's mostly the fact that they could've done so much more with such a solid concept that made me so disappointed lol
When will people learn that buying into the hype is inevitably a disappointment. Oh wait, gamers are all retarded. Nevermind.
Not all of us are dumb. I didn't buy NMS or buy into its hype. It was too secretive for me and I waited until release. I still dont want it.
We are both at the same time an incredibly intelligent and unbelievably naive culture.

Mario, is an example of a great game with a poor story (go rescue a kidnapped princess) but amazing gameplay. Love me some sidescrollers!
While flawed gameplay can make a game sub par, I would take a flawed game with an amazing story over the opposite any day.
I think you can get away with meh gameplay that is heavily polished if you have an amazing story. Anything below that and you get a bad game
I'd say Destiny is your game then. Story is meh but it has the smoothest gameplay of any shooter I've played so MP and raids are awesome.
Destiny isn't your game. The shooting mechanics were well done. I admit. But by god does everything else ruin it.
I've got over 1500 hours into it and still going strong. I'd say it is a pretty great game.
CycloneSP
honestly, I think extra credits hit the nail on the head. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DfhPNsQtaXo destiny is a comfort game.

In order to advance as a medium, games need to start fusing gameplay mechanics to more fully immerse a player in the story.
JabberwockJedi
Story is more important for me, personally. I can forgive less-than-great gameplay if the story is good enough.
I thing MGSV has a good gameplay.
True. And a ... strange, but for me good story. That is totally subjective tho.

The Souls Series is a masterclass of "Show, don't tell." 99 percent of the lore is theories made by the player base based on in game clues.

Yeah elder scrolls games for example dont have a great story either but everything else is close to perfect. Atleast Skyrim and Oblivion.
GHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAH The gameplay in skyrim is garbage. Are you kidding me? Combat is the most meaningless piece of crap.
Deathbyvodka
The main story might be lackluster but there are litterally thousands of stories in in bethesda game..
Yeah but i just meant the mainstory. Of course there are hundreds or thousands of great quests
WinstonChurchmountain
The game play in both of those games is questionable, but made up for in story.
And possibility. That's the true force of Bethesda. A world filled with history, and you can build your own in it.
Yes. Even if that history is "Guy who climbed a castle on his horse using nothing but paintbrushes."
NotHarroc
Really depends on the game. Legend of Zelda wouldn't be fun with a shitty story. Same for Last of Us or Metal Gear games.
SquirtleSquad420
Does legend of zelda have a great story? Collect things, save kingdom from bad guy. Not many plot twists.
It has a good enough story for what it is. Point is great gameplay won't make up for awful story unless its a sandbox survival type game.

Actually I'll wade through lackluster game-play for awesome stories. That's why I prefer Deus Ex and Mass Effect to Fallout, every time.

In my opinion...depends on the fallout game in question, fallout 3 or 4 are the games that I feel have a weaker story (1)
But new vegas, and fallout 2 are much better in that regard, also Fallout 1 has the Master who is one of my favorite villains of all time

Dark souls also. I think DS and MH might be related
They have similar concepts of gameplay and frustration, but almost polar opposites in terms of atmosphere (DS being dark; MH being happy)

Indeed. But I don't mind that if the story pulls me in, which it did in FA3. FA4, tho ...
Nomulus
I dunno how you define gameplay, but there's nothing else in FO4 to reel me in other than the gameplay. New Vegas on the other hand...
New Vegas had some amazing stories. Personally, I absolutely loved the story contained in the DLC's. By far the best Fallout DLC ever.
That's my point. I find NV's gameplay to be atrocious, but it's worth it for the worldbuilding and attention to detail.
Vriska99
i didn't like Fo4 at all, didnt play much of it but it felt very meh to me. Loved FoNV and 3, but could not get into 4
Loved NV and 4, couldn't get into 3. NV nailed the RPG part, 4 nailed the shooter part, 3 didn't quite nail either of them IMO.
TexasInJuly
I don't dislike fo4. Just..Hard to feel like a fallout game. But totally loved fonv and fo3
Yea, improving the combat took that game fucking up and beyond. I mean Fallout 3? AWESOME. Fallout 4 was an orgy and a half. With brownies.
PrincessAnus
I hate brownies.
outside of the standard combat loop and settlements it was the same or simplified or worse than new vegas though.
That's subjective though. I think it was great, others, not so much. And the compromise we seek will be a fantastic game! Someday.
I'm the only fan of the story it seems
Migotchi
Not necessarily. Destiny has excellent gameplay for a very lackluster story presented in a clumsy way.
DaveGrohlsBrokenLeg
Destiny had shit gameplay with a shit story and shit everything
Bad story yes, but I found the game mechanics to be both dynamic and well put-together. It just got repetitive due to its poor narrative.
If I'm honest I got bored straight away so barely played it and probably shouldn't judge it
Denbus26
I know the whole grimoire thing is a pretty bad delivery system, but the lore inside those cards is actually really deep and intriguing
I agree with that, but would it have been so hard to put it in the game as a menu option? Other games do that, and it works well.
The source of most of destiny's issues is that they insisted on making last gen the exact same. They had to remove an item comparison
And the loot system used to be absolute garbage, but they tweaked it to the point where you can hit max light at a reasonable pace. You
Might wanna give it another try at some point. They had a horrible first impression, but they actually are improving on it

But why play FPS games on console? I feel so limited with the control sticks when I can turn 360 in half a second with my mouse.
Personally, I like you can strafe in any direction on consoles, while you're limited to only 8 directions on a keyboard
No "PC Master Race" intended: Some games are better with a controller, others play better with mouse and keyboard.
EvenStevensEvenSemen
Yea, mass effect had a beautiful story but the gameplay was varying degrees and flavors of ass
"Oh look guys, tactical cover in an outdoor jungle setting" *Eye twitch*
OneWithEveryThing
While varying I really liked the gameplay.
UptownFunkgotmeLockedOutOfHeavenwitha24kMagicGrenade
Yes but in the right hands it can be a mighty fine ass.
EmWatsonLover
Damn Idk how you aren't at -5000 votes right now
cause I'm painfully right
That doesn't protect from downvote fairy usually. Maybe you reached another level of right ? Something never seen (at least by me) before ?
Well people on imgur love against the grain stuff if timed and contented properly for their fickle tastes.
ME3 was the worst of it but otherwise I thought the ME1 and 2 had pretty good gameplay?
No they didn't. Constant glitches, your teammates basically act like short circuited robots. That was 1, 2 was better. 1/2
2/2 To put in another way, I don't replay ANY of the games for the shooter sections.
If you say so. Gameplay for ME was ridiculously fun and fairly unique. I was a master sniper in 1.
SometimesIEatTooMuch
Yes, and destiny was the opposite. Fantastic gameplay and a story that made you completely forget why you have to kill the guy you're killin
They learned a lot with taken king. It's a step in the right direction. Hopefully when Destiny 2 releases next year we actually get a game.
you're killing him because he's in the way of the other guy you kill to try and get a Gjallarhorn
Destiny tried to be Halo, Mass Effect, Guitar Hero, Cooking Mama, Borderlands, and Mario Kart all at once.
doubleormuffin
Similarly, Bethesda games have fantastic worldbuilding and usually great stories, but the gameplay is, quite honestly, not very good.
Seriously, Skyrim is straight up bad. The combat feels unsatisfying, the "stealth" is a fucking joke, and EVERYTHING TAKES FOREVER TO KILL
Dontrespectmahauthoritah
Stealth combat is the best style because you don't have to go through to normal shitfest.
...Everything took you forever to kill? I mean, dragons, sure, but everything?
Compared to how quickly things should die? Yes. If you get an arrow through your brain, no matter what the arrow's made of, you should die.
Akran
Vanilla Skyrim, maybe. Modded Skyrim is amazing.
No mods make the combat good. Also, if the only tolerable way to play a game is with 50 community made modifications, it's not a good game.
SierraFive
Mass effect actually got better for every game. Gameplay wise.
IGotCareless
Honestly, I loved ME 1s gameplay. 2 was a slog to playthrough. My engineer became a fucking wizard. ME 3 was a decent compromise.
I'd argue that varied on class. Vanguard became fun as hell in 2 but was mediocre in 1. Biotic Charge was nuts.
That's fair. I love my Engi in 1, I always run it. I didn't give 2 a second playthrough. It wasn't even bad, just... a wizard, not an engi.
sendbobsandvegana
And as the gameplay got better, the story unfortunately suffered. ME1 had by far the best story.
Honestly, if it weren't for the last 10 or so minutes of ME3 I think it would have been remembered ad the best in the franchise.
srsfaceI8C
Disagreed. ME2 was the highlight of that series in every aspect. I'm still waiting for ME3 to happen.
I loved all 3, the complete story was epic. Characters were lovable, gameplay was nicely paced etc. Ending though...
The biggest reason why the ending was so lackluster was because of how much choice you had earlier. Then you got that ending :|
Someone will have to let me know what they saw in ME 2's story. It was bare bones with one recruitment mission after another.
And I thought 3 was fantastic both story and game play
Kevbo586
Yes but ME2 had the best game play story combo.
idontliketheclonebone
I liked the story on 2 more, the crew missions really helped add depth and get attached to them.
tezzeret890
ME1 is my favorite solely for artistic integrity. Its the only game you had to make a choice where some one important would die
2 was somewhat difficult to save them all if you don't know what you're doing but 3 had a bar to fill up. I mean come on
Voltair
That's pretty much the exact opposite of how Mass Effect 3 was. Excellent Gameplay, but the story was ass.
Some of the writing in 3 was odd. Other than that I found it ok, 3 was mostly about your companions it felt like.
I thought the story was great until the very end. When all of your choices just didn't matter anymore
Kai Leng ruined whatever part of the game he was in.
That guy belonged in a Mirror's Edge game, not Mass Effect.
Rifneno
Yep. That's what I always say, as the series went on the story got worse and the gameplay got better. that's why 2 was so popular:
it was a happy medium between the two. A goldielocks zone.
iamdanman
Fallout 4 storyline was a bit disappointing.
howdoeyeballsdo

Illusive Man is one of my alltime favourite ...well, let's not spoil it.

I'm commander Sheppard, and this is my favourite comment on this point
Iceblade09
You did good son, I'm... proud of you.
TheThunderbirdRising
Hell, ME3 even has great multiplayer too
Tinglyflame
It was the perfect example of simple and sweet IMO
JohnnyTheBlade
Had to be Mass Effect, someone else might have gotten it wrong
Laubby
ooh... got the feels right there. The worst was when I tried the renegade option and killed Moridin, I felt so fucking guilty.
ExaltedAnt
I may get hate for this but Fo4 does not belong on this list imo.
failphins2
Should have had Mass Effect instead
Kangarou
It does not. Bethesda is to stories what Ubisoft is to customer service.

Fallout NV: Someone shot me in the head. I'm gonna do literally whatever the fuck I want.
everettscott
To be fair, I liked New Vegas more. I just don't think the Fallout Bethesda writing team does anything really interesting.
TheFoxCouncil

Nothing good happens in Mexico
Duckfan91
Great game. Fun with zombies, too.
FajitaPrinceofAllMexicans
Yeah, you ever know there's a cheating easy mode I found?
Duckfan91
No. But, why cheat. Get the blunderbus and kickass!
FajitaPrinceofAllMexicans
Because it was just kinda funny, but yeah I do stick to the way it's supposed to play.
Duckfan91
Okay, tell me about it.

Awesome multiplayer experience as well. Cept for all of the ballerina spinners.

never
Blackd0nuts
I just dropped a tear. Come on sequel!!
trentinho
All time favorite story line in a game. My hopes are extremely high for the sequel I assume is coming next fall
DukeOfChutney608
do you have any proof of that? not being argumentative, genuinely curious cuz i thought they were announces it at E3 this year but nope.
trentinho
Just an article I caught a few weeks back suggesting that a sequel was in the works for release with project Scorpio next year
DukeOfChutney608
god i hope thats true
trentinho
It's hard to imagine what they would do though. A sequel would be hard given the time period rdr ends in
SomeCanadianGuyEh
I love the story, spent hours in singleplayer, played the hell out of the multiplayer then they add zombies to it just make it even better <3.
Irishda
Come get me when they remake red dead revolver instead
DrSirTookTookIII
...why? I mean it was good, but Redemption was about 10x better.
Irishda
Redemption was a sandbox. People like sandboxes. But there characters, dialogue, and plot were all 10x worse
Irishda
Redemption: "You're pretty quiet mister." "WELL THAT'S A FUNNY STORY LEMME PROCEED TO NOT SHUT THE FUCK UP FOR THE NEXT TEN MINUTES!"
DontTazeMeBrah
Halo 1 + 2 tho

Halo 3 was great too!

iwastheoneonce
you got some fallout 4 in your good point.
DapperBlook
Absolutely! It was a GOOD game. Fantastic even! It was just not my cup of tea, you know.
deltajesus
Similar to my opinion on Alien Isolation, really beautiful, wonderfully atmospheric but I just got so fucking bored.
thefucksnotgiven
For me...yeah I'd go with W3, before that it was Half Life 2.
kaamila
I'm the only one who didn't like the game. The voice acting seemed so robotic and scripted it bored me. Too used to gta, BL2 acting I guess.
bitticlan
To me it felt like there were too many barriers I had to get through just to move on. I couldn't enjoy the game until I did 7 things first.
LtShed
See that's really good and all...but Super Metroid is the best for me. And all with like 5 written lines in it. so so soo good
KingdomKarts
Entirely subjective. A lot of games are memorable for multiplayer. Not to mention the eSports side of things.
Osarphi
By definition, the whole post and the comments are subjective.
KingdomKarts
I'm aware. I just think people need to realize that multiplayer is not a problem, phoned it multiplayer for no reason is. 1/2
KingdomKarts
Some of my greatest gaming memories are from games like Smash Bros., Mario Kart, sports games, and Assassin's Creed online play.
MinnesotaMathew
do I need to play the first 2 before I play 3?
Blackd0nuts
The first one aged pretty badly. It's nice for introducing the character(S) and context but the 3's plot stands by itself

Nah, but play both.

Skyrim and fallout had great stories?

True
Deadpoolio7
Or, yknow, The Last of Us. Amazing story with a surprisingly decent and addictive multiplayer. Actually one of the best in recent years.
Yeahnoibet
I loved the storyline, so good. It was like playing a movie. I didn't know there's a multiplayer option, is it good?
Deadpoolio7
How on earth did you miss that on the main menu haha. Yeah, it's amazing. Stealthy, teamwork and tense as shit. It was fantastic
TheDTYP
Deus Ex. Play it. Also sidenote, if rather they fleshed out the gameplay and story of Mass Effect 3 than added multiplayer
PaleJr
Tends to happen when you're bought by EA, though. I'd be hard pressed to name an IP EA acquired that didn't later have multiplayer added.
Deadpoolio7
The multiplayer in Mass Effect 3 was great though. And fed nicely into the story.
ozzycats
Agreed, im probably one of the few people still playinf the multiplayer

FuckoTheClown
No. Waste of money. the first two are nowhere near as good. the second one's story isn't even that great. watch a youtube synopsis.
FartLongerNotHarder
Won't that spoil it? I'm actually downloading 3 now. I'm pretty sick of multiplayer games and getting owned by Asian kids
FuckoTheClown
no, watch a synopsis of the first two. you don't super need to but if you want some background for the world it's nice. doesn't spoil 3
Zatary
Before I played 3, I couldn't bring myself to skip any games in a series. Best gaming choice of my life. Wirth it if you want the story
FartLongerNotHarder
I've played number 1 but that was years ago

i only just started 3 but from what i've heard you do not need to know anything from previous games, but I like knowing the world.

I just finished it today. I almost cried at the ending I got.
ktkutthroat
I was so pissed at the original ending I got I went all the way back to the Isle of Mists save and replayed the game out.

Fialovich
You can play two games, you know.
lumpypumpkin
In theory this would be best, but all too often the story is sacrificed or butchered for more online multiplayer content.
Fialovich
*Coff* Dishonored *coff*
fufuwewe
you mean the story that decides if the world gets plagued because you as an assassin killed people...
ImgurPhantomBlockedMyOtherAccount
yes
JohnJacobJingleHeimerSmitt
Nah man, all the guilds and mainquests in oblivion were grade A. They really fell short in skyrim
deltajesus
I quite enjoyed the dark brotherhood stuff in Skyrim.
LapisScarab
I thought the Fighter's Guild in both were lame and Skyrim's Mage's Guild was way more interesting. Oblivion won the others though.
LapisScarab
Skyrim is a great vehicle for role playing and telling your own stories I think. And a lot of the side stories were really good.
naujkun
What roleplaying? Do i want to do this or do i want to do it later? :V
Cheomesh
Until that fuckin' 99th dagr0n comes to annoy you.
GregorCorgane
Then you make a whole other character and find out that dragons don't spawn if you never start the whiterun quests... Then it's perfect.
Cheomesh
:o rly??
LapisScarab
The main story in Skyrim wasn't even "bad" it was just generic.
Bonerhitler
The worst thing about it, is just how little the storylines worked together, or even with the game as a whole.
LapisScarab
I thought it actually was pretty epic and fun to do, it's just less interesting than the other quests and entirely optional.
Bonerhitler
The civil war existed in its own little pocket timeline and could be removed from the game with little to no issue.
Bonerhitler
xaviouswolffe
And that's what really got me, in a hospital there was a holotape from a woman to her husband talking about how bad it was. Going to some ②
xaviouswolffe
village you could find a terminal and another holotape left by the husband about how he and their boys wanted to see her again ③
DickDastardly404
I think I remember the one about the the boys and the father hiding out in the bunker. Pretty heart wrenching.
MalkavianProstitute
Game: frozen girl saves son! Me: frozen girl falls in love with a mick druggie, becomes trade queen, unites all settlements. Peace reigns.
thundagunned
But another settlement needs your help!
Gawky
try playing without the minute men, its so much more fun
Gawky
I did i never rescue preston/no minutte men, that was a great fun story
TheHypocrite
What if the OC meant whole series, same with TES. There are weaker pieces among them but most of them had solid storytelling.
Ragnarok1030
I liked Fallout 4. Kinda disappointed with how short it was..even with the DLCs..but I still enjoyed it
PascalsBookie
i've played the hell out of the game, it looks nice, but failed where it counts. building is addictive, but ultimately not fun. just work
PascalsBookie
my biggest problem is that i don't care for any of the weapons, and the enchantments for items actually ruins it a little- exploding shotgun
Ragnarok1030
I can see your point, I could have done without the extensive building. Maybe replace it with more side quests..?
deltajesus
I fucking hated most of the weapon designs, and the lack of proper uniques other than the pistol was hugely disappointing.
PascalsBookie
I just miss the assault carbine. It was so satisfying. The survival rifle and light in the darkness too. But mostly assault carbine's sound
ProfessionalArceus
I thought the whole finding your son thing was good. Especially the when you actually get inside the institute, so many feels.
D3aek
I didn't really have that many feels, I just power fisted my son the first chance I got because he was a little shit.
ProfessionalArceus
I agree if you're talking about kid Shaun. Adult Shaun made me want hug him.
deltajesus
I had 0 emotional attachment to him, you see him in a crib for like 2 minutes at the start of the game and that's most of your interactions.
3point141592653589793238462643383279502884197169399375105
I really didn't like the fallout 4 story. It was probably my fault though, I was far too hyped for a game I knew nothing about
pyth151
Fallout 4 a great story? Laff
ThatGuyWhoThinksEveryoneIsAPineapple
Oh come on, nobody plays a fallout game for the main plot. What makes the franchise so great are the characters and side quests.
pyth151
Yeah fo4 side quests were amazing. Shit wait I gotta go save another village from ghouls
Makinan
Shit, they should have put D00M '16 in there. It's SO BADASS. A berserker packin' man and a half, a 12 on a ten point scale of badness!
LordxGodxKing
fallout NV was the best
darkconsole
the main quest is never the story with bethesda. you have to randomly wander for an additional 500 gameplay hours to piece it together.
Bonerhitler
Then you have to stop because every quest line is broken and none of the NPCs are spawning where they should anymore.
parla
I like the Fallout 4 story.
Bonerhitler
I'm sorry about your brain damage.

Bonerhitler
Anime may be shit, but it's still better than fallout 4's story.
DisgruntledLimey
Same
Burritoheart
So did I, but it was good not great IMO
ghostie808
Hmm story is ok. But the setting and atmosphere they create is what we love (The early 1900's vibe+ music)
MisterRobot
I'd hardly call the 1950's style "early 1900's", but yeah, the setting is what makes fallout
Bearilla
The dialogue sucked ASS
ghostie808
If it's open world they all suck ass . Playing no man sky right now and it's so bad . Games good though

no man's sky is garbage, even the creator said it wouldn't be fun in an interview
ghostie808
Getting hugely repetitive. But everyone wants to Know what happens in the centre of the universe
CountEjacula
I'm actually pretty offended they've grouped it with Witcher 3 and Last of Us
BigBlueBurd
I'm pretty offended the Last of Us is in that list. The only good story in there is the Witcher really.
Joestopbeinggay
Please shut the fuck up
Tinglyflame
Fallout 4 was a joke, I'm not a huge like min/max guy for RPGs (il toy with it a bit, get in depth occasionally) BUT IT WAS SO DAMN BASIC1/2
Tinglyflame
Overall an amazing game though
tulkusrunner
than a great story although most wouldnt have those different, i find it hard to explain
InsertCleverandOriginalUsernameHere
Its one of the best games ever
deltajesus
I would not hesitate to say it's the best RPG I've ever played.
KillerDiabeetus
You absolutely need to play witcher sooooo goooood.
FarneseDeVandimion
should I play the other 2 witcher games beforehand or is it a standalone kind of game
CountEjacula
Maybe not as 'well written' per se theme-wise, but it's a lot longer and entertaining all the way through, 80-ish hours of fun at minimum.
CountEjacula
I meant the main story isn't as complex and deep as TLOU, it's still great, and Witcher 3 is my favourite game of all time. Stop hating pls.
GregorCorgane
The dlc stories alone are worth getting the game. The main story... Jesus. I felt like I lost my will to live when I finished it...
GregorCorgane
I just sat there thinking: "what now?"
imgurgud
Along with Skyrim.
C0mtraya
Wouldn't say Skyrim had a bad story (actually quite interesting imo). They just failed at presentation/implementation of the story.
nahclluf
There wasn't anything wrong with the story was there? The game focused on gameplay and player choice, as it should.
C0mtraya
Still all of the three storylines (alduin, harkon, miraak) were quite enjoyable but no match for Witcher 3.
adam1111
Get the fuck out.
ChrisCarTheMarauder
I'm sorry you were 14 at the time and Skyrim was your first RPG, I really and truly am
adam1111
Get over yourself you smug little gobshite, I was playing RPGs when you were still sucking your mother's tits.
TheGreatRadioControversy
"smug little gobshite" is now my go to insult.
ChrisCarTheMarauder
So which was it, shit taste from the start or did it come slowly with old age?
TheBirdBrain23
There's dragons, racist assholes, and more racist assholes. Skyrim's main story in a nutshell.

New Vegas was one of a kind, I wish they made a sequel.

Really? I'd put it behind 3 and 4. There was no drive to do anything. Just a bunch of disconnected stuff.
Burritoheart
Dead Money tho. Best fallout story of the modern games.
FiddlerofFate
Not trying to disrespect your opinion though
Burritoheart
Thanks. Most people down vote at any sign of an opinion of F4 or FNV that isn't their own.
FiddlerofFate
Ah no problem it is good to keep an open mind
FiddlerofFate
It felt more living in my opinion and the conclusion was a big part of it and tied up loose ends that made it feel like your own story (1)
FiddlerofFate
The clear depth of choice really helped as well. I was dissapointed in Fallout 4 mostly because I was expecting a story like New Vegas (2)
FiddlerofFate
Fallout 4 was fine but the ending and lack of a variety of choices ruined it for me. I could play New Vegas multiple times and get a new (3)
tatischief
As a big fan of Sapkowski, the games and the world toom yes. But FNV storytelling was superb. One of the best choice based games in decades
FiddlerofFate
Obsidian makes good games, Pillars of Eternity was good. They did a good job with South Park Stick of Truth however not my kind of humor.
FiddlerofFate
Aerolfoz
Replaying Oblivion however.... the side quests are so damn good.
hetriedtokillmewithaforklift
Honestly, I think the story and gameplay in Bethesda games are mediocre to terrible and boring. But the lore is awesome and huge.
WitcherSchoolDropout
I love reading all the books.
Panda4hire
are they any good?
WitcherSchoolDropout
Some of them, like the Lusty Argonian Maid, are hilarious
Panda4hire
LOl.
IgorMihail
Panda4hire
I don't need no story for that son.
SleepyWalrus
indeed, but it is nevertheless a drive to get to new places :3
springlake
Fallout 4 and Skyrim are indeed seriously shitty examples. New Vegas, Fallout 1 and Fallout 2 would have been much better.
LaughingWolf
Funny enough, New Vegas, Fallout 1 and Fallout 2 were not made Bethesda.
springlake
Indeed. But New Vegas at least was published by Bethesda and as such they would have had some poking to do in it.
LaughingWolf
Bethesda didn't write or do anything for New Vegas except for help Obsidian patch bugs, which New Vegas still had tons of at launch.
Quiveren
I cared more for the companion cube than my family in fallout 4.
CyberJackalope
They have a million pages of lore and 0 characters whom you care whether they live or die.
Selerox
Sometimes, I'd take that over a great story within a game that railroads you.
Panda4hire
I liken a game like that to Bioshock. You were being rail-roaded but didn't realize you were until later.
cambot339
I agree. Skyrim in particular had pretty lame main/guild quests
LookingCoolJoker
The dark brotherhood was especially dissapointing for me after the quest line in oblivion
HorseMcFucker
The base games are so-so, but the DLC tends to be amazing. (See; Dead Money, The Divide, Brotherhood of Steel, Dragonborn/Dawnguard.)
LaughingWolf
Dead Money and The Divide (Lonesome Road) were not made by Bethesda. New Vegas and Fallout 1 and 2 were not made Bethesda either.
HorseMcFucker
Bethesda had their fingers in New Vegas, Broterhood of Steel was Fallout 3, Dragonborn/Dawnguard Is Skyrim, and Fallout 4's DLC good too.
LaughingWolf
All Bethesda did for New Vegas was allow Obsidian to work on aFallout game, they didn't do any of the writing.
Chimwizlet
Yeah, I was surprised to see them both on there. They're both pretty weak in story, and the quests have been poor in the most recent games.
DatMormon
Side quests are where it's at
Durzaka
Exactly. if anything it should say something like "We don't need massive open worlds. We need tight immersive worlds."
funkinsk8
I'm feeling like BethSoft is becoming a victim of their own success and fan's expectations. Every move has to be bigger and more grand.
funkinsk8
Well, that's what they think anyways.
Albertiarp
The stories hold back their games. I just want to go over there and angrily shake my fist at them.
aveyinc
I am finishing off New Vegas for the 1st time. Amazing story lines! I wish obsidian could get their hands on the fo4 platform & make magic!
kaztas
I could never finish Oblivion and Fallout 3. Too expansive
rossalupus
They need obsidian to do the nezt fallout story. WE need obsidian to do the next fallout story...
LookingCoolJoker
I'd like to see a remade 1st and 2nd game with more voice acting but still in the isometric view
Koztah
Obsidian 'gets' Fallout better than Bethesda ever did. Probably has to do with the ex-Black Isle staff working there.
slapmychipsup
Fallout 4 new vegas would be awesome
johnvictor
I think we've had a lot of California/NCR story. What I want to know more is a good Fallout game of the midwest BoS. That or what about /1
johnvictor
the southeast of the US.
rossalupus
I've heard a rumour of New Orleans being a contender for next location...
Radix865
Yeah, and this time with more than 18 months to make it. That's hilariously short for a game of this type...
Obi0juan0kenobi
Honestly it's quite sad watching the dev commentaries and seeing how grand a scope was cut short by the time limit they had.
rossalupus
And even then it's my favourite of the first person fallout games...
Silverforte
Skyrim would have been 100X better if you could have played the entire game exactly as is, but with the option of ONE friend joining you.
Kobalt187
That's all I ever wanted! Just one friend to join alongside me in battle.
SlantsDraws
I believe an online component like dark souls co-op would have been great. Like summoning a champion from Sovngarde or something
asanimgurianiliealot
The world and lore are great, the stories you play not so much.
Panda4hire
Oh yeah the flavor is amazing. but the whole reason behind the big quest isn't engaging. I blame having too many choices.
cpnbeeb
Fallout 4 took a nice hearty shit all over the established lore. Then their VP handwaved this away via twitter.
CaveCanem
I played "the" story a couple of times, but now I just go into that game for my own story, fuck the quest line. That's the best way to Beth.
CaptainJesusAndTheGodBrigade
The world and lore isn't even good, it used to be in TES apparently, but they're fucking Fallout. It used to be very good.
springlake
That's because Emil Pagliarulo can't write stories for shit. (He was the writer for Fallout 3+4 AND Skyrim.)
springlake
Oblivion and New Vegas had different writers which is why they are actually good. At least New Vegas, Oblivion is touch and go at times.
TheRealRocknrolla
New Vegas story was fantastic. The only similarity between 4 and NV is "oh shit they liked multiple factions"
BillyMaysHereWithOxiClean
To be fair, New Vegas was developed by a completely different studio.
Xdeddc
They've begun shitting on Fallout's lore. They don't understand it. This is especially troublesome considering that the story was awful.
cpnbeeb
That began with Fallout 3. Bethesda: "Shit I don't know, just check the wiki page."
BillyMaysHereWithOxiClean
I really hope they involve Obsidian in some capacity for any future Fallout projects. Bethesda really dropped the ball with Fallout 4.
ForlornFennec
I could probably stomach all the other changes were it not for them castrating the dialogue system.
BillyMaysHereWithOxiClean
I actually didn't have that much of a problem with it. It was the lack of skills or any specialization that upset me.
strangledbyaturtleneck
I really liked Oblivion, Skyrim was kinda blah story wise
Cheomesh
Obliv was nice in that we weren't The Chosen One like we saw in Morrowind. Both it and Skyrim had nice worlds. Both had crap stories.
vikingdeath
well at least in morrowind the pre-endgame goal was forcing everyone to acknowledge you as a chosen one in skyrim they handed it to you
Cheomesh
And they all sounded so...I dunno, winded?
asanimgurianiliealot
Exactly. If I'd never played Oblivion I would have though Skyrim was way better. The faction quest lines were awful in comparison. In 1/
DiabolicPenguin
Exactly, I absolutely loved all of oblivion's factions compared to skyrim's
asanimgurianiliealot
Oblivion you actually felt like a thief, assassin, mage, or fighter. In Skyrim you have thieves spending 99% of their time diving 2/
asanimgurianiliealot
Through ruins rather than performing elaborate heists, and you kill all the time which is totally off putting.
buckbuckbuckybuck
I don't know, I like the story I create by the decisions I make. I tell my story in those games.
Panda4hire
Then I might argue that makes it a creation tool masquerading as a game and not so much a game.
deltajesus
In some of them yeah, but fallout 4 was atrocious in that respect.
ImNotCreativeEnoughForAGoodUsername
I think it's more the stories you create in them. Two people playing the same game can have fulfilling experiences and yet never hit the 1/2
ImNotCreativeEnoughForAGoodUsername
same story points (excluding the "main" ones) ever the entire playthrough. 2/2
Panda4hire
Yes but that isn't really compelling storytelling then, it's roleplaying.
ImNotCreativeEnoughForAGoodUsername
...You mean like how it's called an RPG, Role-Playing Game?
Panda4hire
but that's not what we are debating we are debating if the main story is compelling.
Radix865
You mean like in Fallout 4 you can choose the "sarcastic yes" instead of just saying "yes"? Or go wild and say "no" that still ends up "yes"
ImNotCreativeEnoughForAGoodUsername
Not exactly, though I do see where you're going with that. I mean more you can be a fighter, you can get married, you can be a Minutemen or
ImNotCreativeEnoughForAGoodUsername
Brotherhood or all of these things. I think Skyrim might have been a bit better with how many options it had though
Radix865
Skyrim actually had the problem that nothing ever mattered. The only ones who noticed they were in the presence of Harbinger-Archmage- (1/2)
Jescobar3200
Dishonored?
ReallyBadAtImgur
I'd say the comment was likely just about the Fallout and Elder Scrolls games.
hattif
Not developed by bethestda.
JudgeRhymehold
Agreed. Considering how much I still play, can't imagine if it were more than fetch and retrieve quests
BlankMage
I think one of their biggest problems is that they have 10,000 NPCs with about 5 voices.
YouAreNowBlinkingAndBreathingManuallyAndHaveTheSuddenUrgeToYawn
Stephen Fry would've cover about half of those, including little girls and old ladies.
BlankMage
Matthew Mercer could get the other half.
zoomtothemoon
The sad thing is I'm so used to hearing the same comforting, familiar voices that I don't know if I'd want uniquely voiced NPCs everywhere.
abarr69
What if we all volunteered to voice every npc for free. Like 1 per person.
Dcwalker30
Sign me up.
PhoenixQueenAzula
Thats why for my current playthrough I changed the game to japanese voices with english subs. Kind of weeby, but its a different experience.
TheodoreWitchfucker
Haha, Heavy Rain was so much fun like that, and a huge variety of language voices!

WilfredPGrundlesnatch
There are ways to not make them repetitive and annoying, as the Witcher 3 has shown.
xaviouswolffe
In the latter case I point to Oblivion. Patrick Stewart voiced the emperor and everyone else sounded the same.
IDontWantFOPgoddamnit
They have a habit of hiring big name voices for characters that they kill off. Patrick Stewart in Oblivion, Liam Neeson in FO3...
b00mh34d5h0t
Spoiler fucker
DWandRFaremyspiritbeings
FO4, first time using a voiced protag and they DIDN'T include alternate low/high intel spoken dialogue...Really missed that opportunity.
TehSeksyManz
You ever play Arcanum? Thats what that game did.
DWandRFaremyspiritbeings
For sure. But their ineptitude is even more on-the-nose than that...because so did the original Fallouts.
jimwormmaster
You sell plants too?
NiceCatchBlancoNinoTooBadYourAssGotSacked

Fortunately, the modding community is willing to do the heavy lifting here: http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/8429/?
BlankMage
I have that one, actually. It adds some great NPCS but doesn't do much to improve the existing ones.
unitedhello
Mediocre by video game standards. Shit by any other mediums. I've listened to rap albums with better stories than Fallout 4
DaDisser
I think people like them because they are a "create your own story within this bigger story" style game
Penguinsruletheworld
Fallout 4 was mediocre in story. My god I can't finish the damn game.
TheBigBadBonerBiter
Spoilers in next post because I feel the same way;
TheBigBadBonerBiter
1) I had the biggest bitch of a time picking a side because they all have varying amounts of suck; Minutemen suck, Railroad are faggots, BoS
TheBigBadBonerBiter
2) are assholes, Institute are dicks. BoS barely nudged out over the others only because you get to rebuild Liberty Prime.
TheGreatAnhey
It was fucking disappointing , I betrayed the railroad and all you got was a "sorry , but not sorry"
Hindenburgh
the story wasnt mediocre, it was just plain bad....
Panda4hire
I found my son and said fuck it.
Rheios
The FBI called...
Rheios
But more seriously - I concur that the game was not what it could have been and replay-ability is damaged greatly.
Penguinsruletheworld
Spoiler Alert: I chose the scientists hoping I could use their technology to make a better tomorrow. But nope. MURDER EVERYONE!
Panda4hire
Yay! Murder!
Tokumeiko
so the game is worth the money then? ok I buy and make corpse pile.
nyaore
Which is why I want them to partner with Obsidian again. Beth makes the world and does the bug testing, Obsidian does the writing.
InternationalPhoneticAlphabet
why would BETHESDA do the bug testing? you could argue theyd be good if they actually had the time for it, but i doubt it.
nyaore
Compared to Obsidian? Bethesda is fine. New Vegas on release was worse than even Morrowind.
InternationalPhoneticAlphabet
huh. guess it show i havent played a completely new game on release since ... i dont think i've ever done that.
CaptainJesusAndTheGodBrigade
New Vegas had the shortest release window, it's also the crappy engine behind a lot of it.
cpnbeeb
Didn't help Bethesda came in while a lead designer was away, pushed time tables ahead, and said "Meet this or everyone is fired.".
Rheios
Which Bethesda was actually bug testers for, worth noting. Obsidian DID do internal stuff, because every dev does, but tmu Bethesda was(1)
Rheios
in charge of bug testing for release. To be fair, my 'tmu' could be wrong.(2)
cpnbeeb
No partnership. Bethesda sabotages whoever they work with. Happened with New Vegas, it'll happen again.
emileld
The bug testing? Is that a joke?
nyaore
Compared to Obsidian? I'll take mildly broken to 'LOLLER SKATES BROKEN'.
DarkZalgo
I don't remember FONV being that broken, but I do remember skyrim being unplayable at some points.
LogeeLassleyyy
New Vegas was hit and miss whether you had bugs or not. I personally don't want another pbsidian game because I had game breaking bugs.
Valiton
I have never played an Obsidian game that I enjoyed.

but... multiplayer for golden eye was a last minute tacked-on thing that was unapproved by some of the team

There are some exceptions but most tacked on suck. Such as STALKER multiplayer. The story was good, no need for multiplayer.

MightyShoePrint
Do it like diablo or Dead Island. 4 to a map, but use the entire world map. Give/take away some quests for multiplayer. Drop in drop out mp
maniacalmacaroni
I loved the Diablo 3 multiplayer. Not sure if the first person would work as well on the same screen but however they can get it to work.
maniacalmacaroni
I would easily pay another $50 for each of those games, and it's not like they have to build them from scratch. just sell remakes with coop.
NougatFromOrbit
I would love some online coop even if a save was limited to being accessed by the 2 players together in a lobby.

A solid near bugless game. And what about Minecraft?
TheSwedishStag
Minecraft was made by a Swede = automatically better ;)
Thatsokaysometimes
i think it's mostly the fact that they could've done so much more with such a solid concept that made me so disappointed lol
Bonerhitler
When will people learn that buying into the hype is inevitably a disappointment. Oh wait, gamers are all retarded. Nevermind.
KungPowDicken
Not all of us are dumb. I didn't buy NMS or buy into its hype. It was too secretive for me and I waited until release. I still dont want it.
MightyShoePrint
We are both at the same time an incredibly intelligent and unbelievably naive culture.
MightyShoePrint
And assholes. Gamers are terrible self-entitled assholes.
LetMePointOut
Well what we really need is great gameplay
flamingflamingo
What we really need is more clickers re: Last of Us.
TheDogEnd
Mario, is an example of a great game with a poor story (go rescue a kidnapped princess) but amazing gameplay. Love me some sidescrollers!
lumpypumpkin
While flawed gameplay can make a game sub par, I would take a flawed game with an amazing story over the opposite any day.
Taskforcem85
I think you can get away with meh gameplay that is heavily polished if you have an amazing story. Anything below that and you get a bad game
asanimgurianiliealot
I'd say Destiny is your game then. Story is meh but it has the smoothest gameplay of any shooter I've played so MP and raids are awesome.
Penguinsruletheworld
Destiny isn't your game. The shooting mechanics were well done. I admit. But by god does everything else ruin it.
asanimgurianiliealot
I've got over 1500 hours into it and still going strong. I'd say it is a pretty great game.
CycloneSP
honestly, I think extra credits hit the nail on the head. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DfhPNsQtaXo destiny is a comfort game.
asanimgurianiliealot
I'd say you get out of it what you put into it. If a comfort game is all you want, then it certainly works for that but doing things like 1/
MagicUmbrellas
Destiny has great game play but is still complete garbage
LV1BlueSlime
Exactly. I don't give a shit about your 1080p 60fps and choice-driven story where none of it actually matters. Just make the gameplay fun.
Rockageddon
Exactly, The Last of US was a feels trip but plagued with beginner traps, and the witcher is a 2 button smash fest, lame as hell.
prolificchicken
like borderlands 2
Hawknite
I like shooting things in multiplayer. Singleplayer games, for me, need to be like Life is Strange or Beyond: Two Souls.
ionlylooklikeapotato
In order to advance as a medium, games need to start fusing gameplay mechanics to more fully immerse a player in the story.
JabberwockJedi
Story is more important for me, personally. I can forgive less-than-great gameplay if the story is good enough.
TheodoreWitchfucker
I thing MGSV has a good gameplay.
Osarphi
True. And a ... strange, but for me good story. That is totally subjective tho.
TheodoreWitchfucker
Yeah metal gears have weird-ish stories. But since I got hooked on them as a kid, I overlook that easily.
RandomGliscor
Yes, I dropped Bioshock Infinite after a third because I found the gameplay to be boring as shit.
ZachNanamus
#teamgameplay
mizcs
what we really need is great graphics!
subjug8r
Dark Souls proves this point. There really isn't any compelling story but the game is pure hit-box porn.
TheUpdootist
Really isn't an easily accessible story*
lefthandedyeti
The Souls Series is a masterclass of "Show, don't tell." 99 percent of the lore is theories made by the player base based on in game clues.
DerHaupt
Yeah elder scrolls games for example dont have a great story either but everything else is close to perfect. Atleast Skyrim and Oblivion.
Penguinsruletheworld
GHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAH The gameplay in skyrim is garbage. Are you kidding me? Combat is the most meaningless piece of crap.
Deathbyvodka
The main story might be lackluster but there are litterally thousands of stories in in bethesda game..
DerHaupt
Yeah but i just meant the mainstory. Of course there are hundreds or thousands of great quests
WinstonChurchmountain
The game play in both of those games is questionable, but made up for in story.
Osarphi
And possibility. That's the true force of Bethesda. A world filled with history, and you can build your own in it.
WinstonChurchmountain
NotHarroc
It has a good enough story for what it is. Point is great gameplay won't make up for awful story unless its a sandbox survival type game.
Nuuuuuwong
Subjective
ChameleonTwist
What Zelda usually lacks in story it more than makes up for in lore. Skyward Sword, however, did have a great story.
gebsmith1
I'm so tired of games focusing on long drawn out stories and graphics compared to good gameplay.
MalkavianProstitute
Walking simulators kill me inside.
RNeao
Or if they have good gameplay and long boring stories. Rushing through that garbage so they'll let you resume playing sucks.
LizardEnterprises
Actually I'll wade through lackluster game-play for awesome stories. That's why I prefer Deus Ex and Mass Effect to Fallout, every time.
MalkavianProstitute
Undertale. Easy as fuck bullethell? Boring. Graphics? 20 years old. Writing? Suddenly a contender for game of the year!
DemonKiller44
In my opinion...depends on the fallout game in question, fallout 3 or 4 are the games that I feel have a weaker story (1)
DemonKiller44
But new vegas, and fallout 2 are much better in that regard, also Fallout 1 has the Master who is one of my favorite villains of all time
pisswaterprincess
I loved fo3 but found the New Vegas story plain boribg, tbh. Fo3 had a better flow, somehow.
xrufus7x
https://media.giphy.com/media/l41lNuWAWEOXuvsY0/giphy.gif
Radicool21
MONSTER HUNTER SAYS HI
Duraxis
Dark souls also. I think DS and MH might be related
Radicool21
They have similar concepts of gameplay and frustration, but almost polar opposites in terms of atmosphere (DS being dark; MH being happy)
Duraxis
That's true. The "farm dude for new gear" is different too. In DS I tend to prefer an early weapon I can upgrade
Yayayupp
came here for this. MH is the best game if it comes to gameplay. if people need deep gameplay mechanics they should start playing MH
CyrosReaver
Exactly, FO4 had a lackluster story but that didn't stop me from spending 250 hours plundering bandit hideouts.
M1n3cr4ftrul35
Honestly, I think the voice actors for the main characters basically killed the story before it came to life.
TheUltimateJew
The gameplay in FO4 is the worst part.
DrFreakBerg
Yeah it's a boring game
xrufus7x
What is that on a Bethesda game, a little past the tutorial?
CyrosReaver
Kek
ThePowerToKillAYakFrom200YardsAway
Kekekeke
Zoronii
For me it's halfway through the sidequests with no progress made on the main quest.
flubberfucker
Fallout 4 is good at many things; gameplay isn't one of them. The same is true of all Bethesda RPGs.
Huor
Indeed. But I don't mind that if the story pulls me in, which it did in FA3. FA4, tho ...
Nomulus
I dunno how you define gameplay, but there's nothing else in FO4 to reel me in other than the gameplay. New Vegas on the other hand...
IDontWantFOPgoddamnit
New Vegas had some amazing stories. Personally, I absolutely loved the story contained in the DLC's. By far the best Fallout DLC ever.
Nomulus
That's my point. I find NV's gameplay to be atrocious, but it's worth it for the worldbuilding and attention to detail.
Vriska99
i didn't like Fo4 at all, didnt play much of it but it felt very meh to me. Loved FoNV and 3, but could not get into 4
Nomulus
Loved NV and 4, couldn't get into 3. NV nailed the RPG part, 4 nailed the shooter part, 3 didn't quite nail either of them IMO.
TexasInJuly
I don't dislike fo4. Just..Hard to feel like a fallout game. But totally loved fonv and fo3
DapperBlook
Yea, improving the combat took that game fucking up and beyond. I mean Fallout 3? AWESOME. Fallout 4 was an orgy and a half. With brownies.
PrincessAnus
I hate brownies.
windragon
outside of the standard combat loop and settlements it was the same or simplified or worse than new vegas though.
DapperBlook
That's subjective though. I think it was great, others, not so much. And the compromise we seek will be a fantastic game! Someday.
PrincessAnus
I'm the only fan of the story it seems
Migotchi
Not necessarily. Destiny has excellent gameplay for a very lackluster story presented in a clumsy way.
DaveGrohlsBrokenLeg
Destiny had shit gameplay with a shit story and shit everything
Migotchi
Bad story yes, but I found the game mechanics to be both dynamic and well put-together. It just got repetitive due to its poor narrative.
DaveGrohlsBrokenLeg
If I'm honest I got bored straight away so barely played it and probably shouldn't judge it
Denbus26
I know the whole grimoire thing is a pretty bad delivery system, but the lore inside those cards is actually really deep and intriguing
Migotchi
I agree with that, but would it have been so hard to put it in the game as a menu option? Other games do that, and it works well.
Denbus26
The source of most of destiny's issues is that they insisted on making last gen the exact same. They had to remove an item comparison
Denbus26
And the loot system used to be absolute garbage, but they tweaked it to the point where you can hit max light at a reasonable pace. You
Denbus26
Might wanna give it another try at some point. They had a horrible first impression, but they actually are improving on it
Taskforcem85
Smoothest FPS experience I've had on console.
Housemaster
Great controls, questionable and glitchy level designs.
Genotex
But why play FPS games on console? I feel so limited with the control sticks when I can turn 360 in half a second with my mouse.
Denbus26
Personally, I like you can strafe in any direction on consoles, while you're limited to only 8 directions on a keyboard
Genotex
No "PC Master Race" intended: Some games are better with a controller, others play better with mouse and keyboard.
EvenStevensEvenSemen
Yea, mass effect had a beautiful story but the gameplay was varying degrees and flavors of ass
Kangarou
"Oh look guys, tactical cover in an outdoor jungle setting" *Eye twitch*
OneWithEveryThing
While varying I really liked the gameplay.
UptownFunkgotmeLockedOutOfHeavenwitha24kMagicGrenade
Yes but in the right hands it can be a mighty fine ass.
EmWatsonLover
Damn Idk how you aren't at -5000 votes right now
EvenStevensEvenSemen
cause I'm painfully right
Osarphi
That doesn't protect from downvote fairy usually. Maybe you reached another level of right ? Something never seen (at least by me) before ?
EvenStevensEvenSemen
Well people on imgur love against the grain stuff if timed and contented properly for their fickle tastes.
flamingflamingo
ME3 was the worst of it but otherwise I thought the ME1 and 2 had pretty good gameplay?
EvenStevensEvenSemen
No they didn't. Constant glitches, your teammates basically act like short circuited robots. That was 1, 2 was better. 1/2
EvenStevensEvenSemen
2/2 To put in another way, I don't replay ANY of the games for the shooter sections.
flamingflamingo
If you say so. Gameplay for ME was ridiculously fun and fairly unique. I was a master sniper in 1.
SometimesIEatTooMuch
Yes, and destiny was the opposite. Fantastic gameplay and a story that made you completely forget why you have to kill the guy you're killin
Taskforcem85
They learned a lot with taken king. It's a step in the right direction. Hopefully when Destiny 2 releases next year we actually get a game.
LtShed
you're killing him because he's in the way of the other guy you kill to try and get a Gjallarhorn
EvenStevensEvenSemen
Destiny tried to be Halo, Mass Effect, Guitar Hero, Cooking Mama, Borderlands, and Mario Kart all at once.
doubleormuffin
Similarly, Bethesda games have fantastic worldbuilding and usually great stories, but the gameplay is, quite honestly, not very good.
doubleormuffin
Seriously, Skyrim is straight up bad. The combat feels unsatisfying, the "stealth" is a fucking joke, and EVERYTHING TAKES FOREVER TO KILL
Dontrespectmahauthoritah
Stealth combat is the best style because you don't have to go through to normal shitfest.
fuckyouandyourwittyusername
...Everything took you forever to kill? I mean, dragons, sure, but everything?
doubleormuffin
Compared to how quickly things should die? Yes. If you get an arrow through your brain, no matter what the arrow's made of, you should die.
Akran
Vanilla Skyrim, maybe. Modded Skyrim is amazing.
doubleormuffin
No mods make the combat good. Also, if the only tolerable way to play a game is with 50 community made modifications, it's not a good game.
SierraFive
Mass effect actually got better for every game. Gameplay wise.
IGotCareless
Honestly, I loved ME 1s gameplay. 2 was a slog to playthrough. My engineer became a fucking wizard. ME 3 was a decent compromise.
Nobody7713
I'd argue that varied on class. Vanguard became fun as hell in 2 but was mediocre in 1. Biotic Charge was nuts.
IGotCareless
That's fair. I love my Engi in 1, I always run it. I didn't give 2 a second playthrough. It wasn't even bad, just... a wizard, not an engi.
sendbobsandvegana
And as the gameplay got better, the story unfortunately suffered. ME1 had by far the best story.
xrufus7x
Honestly, if it weren't for the last 10 or so minutes of ME3 I think it would have been remembered ad the best in the franchise.
srsfaceI8C
Disagreed. ME2 was the highlight of that series in every aspect. I'm still waiting for ME3 to happen.
SierraFive
I loved all 3, the complete story was epic. Characters were lovable, gameplay was nicely paced etc. Ending though...
SierraFive
The biggest reason why the ending was so lackluster was because of how much choice you had earlier. Then you got that ending :|
ChameleonTwist
Someone will have to let me know what they saw in ME 2's story. It was bare bones with one recruitment mission after another.
ChameleonTwist
And I thought 3 was fantastic both story and game play
Kevbo586
Yes but ME2 had the best game play story combo.
idontliketheclonebone
I liked the story on 2 more, the crew missions really helped add depth and get attached to them.
tezzeret890
ME1 is my favorite solely for artistic integrity. Its the only game you had to make a choice where some one important would die
tezzeret890
2 was somewhat difficult to save them all if you don't know what you're doing but 3 had a bar to fill up. I mean come on
Voltair
That's pretty much the exact opposite of how Mass Effect 3 was. Excellent Gameplay, but the story was ass.
UptownFunkgotmeLockedOutOfHeavenwitha24kMagicGrenade
Some of the writing in 3 was odd. Other than that I found it ok, 3 was mostly about your companions it felt like.
idontliketheclonebone
I thought the story was great until the very end. When all of your choices just didn't matter anymore
Voltair
Kai Leng ruined whatever part of the game he was in.
Nomulus
That guy belonged in a Mirror's Edge game, not Mass Effect.
Rifneno
Yep. That's what I always say, as the series went on the story got worse and the gameplay got better. that's why 2 was so popular:
Rifneno
it was a happy medium between the two. A goldielocks zone.
