My work makes use of old rail spikes, so I've learned that you don't ever touch the rail when those boys are around. Piss them off enough and it's a pretty big fine for trespassing.
Where I grew up (this was like 30 years ago) you’d walk down the tracks with your buddies and kick them, and then pull up the loose ones and take them with you. My dad’s side of the family was hunters, they had multiple, multiple uses.
Over time they work themselves loose and fall out. We just grab the ones that have already fallen out. Although one time we found an old box of brand new ones, with the sacrificial coating just starting to peel off. That was a great find.
