As a graphic designer, I’ve LITERALLY had to add “AI conversion” to my resume

1 month ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 3

As artist I hate AI and the usage of it, I do understand it can have some benefits but the cost is too high and not worth it to take away actual work from talented people

Recently "lost" a graphic design contract to AI - Client cancelled the contract and posted the slop to their SocMed. I saw it and reached out. "Hah! My 16yo nephew whipped it up in like 5 minutes on his phone! We have over 1000 pre-orders already. Why would I pay you?"

Well, for a start, I would have put the decimal place in the right spot, and you wouldn't be selling your product at 1% of the intended price... Good luck!"

1 month ago | Likes 52 Dislikes 6

funny if true. Also nice of you to tell them.

1 month ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 2

I am reasonably sure the pre-order process doesn't involve just the graphic alone, but it's a funny story.

1 month ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

It's a small self-run business and the pre-order process they came up with was "Send us an email, and you're on the list."

While they can obviously let those who placed orders know there was a mistake, there are Advertising Standards laws in play that mean he will still have to honour those orders at the price stated.

Yes, he pulled the graphic as soon as he was told, but it is still going to cost him big-time for the pre-orders accepted before he closed the deal off in a panic.

At least, the ones you can TELL are AI.. Its getting better and better every day, you'll miss more than you spot soon enough

1 month ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

Just because it's getting better doesn't mean it'll ever be good.

1 month ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Good as in moral or good as in indistinguishable from non-AI? Because it is already getting pretty close, it won't be long before you can't spot AI at all anymore.

I recently went to an elementary school and noticed that they used AI for their mascot .

As a guy who has been using Photoshop since around 1998... I have mixed feelings: I use both ai and skills. For an ordinary person, ai makes things easy, but at the same time it has basically rendered graphic design and web design careers obsolete. Or at least 75% of them.

1 month ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

I remember when digital started becoming a more common thing, people said the same things that's being said about Gen AI now: "It's a computer doing all the work." "It's not real art." "It's gonna take real artist's jobs" "It has no soul." etc.

My DM used an AI generated image to represent a well-known character from D&D lore for one of our sessions. There's plenty of art of her too

I'm trying to figure out how to tell my work I dislike my likeness being used in ai slop images they've started using to advertise work events. Unfortunately we have way too many "if I'm not bothered by it then I can keep doing it" people at work, and saying something may just escalate the issue. I guess I just keep my head down until I find something else.

1 month ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

On the other hand, if no one says anything they can also keep doing it. It's unlikely that it's only you in that entire workplace that's bothered, and you're allowed to dislike the use of your own face

1 month ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

AI is essentially just Googling, only a thousand times faster than before. Nothing more. AI feeds on itself and ultimately degrades the quality of content. We need to realize that AI does not replace humans. In science, there are good examples of AI discovering things, that had previously gone unnoticed. In astronomy AI can "see" faster than humans, and so on. Unfortunately, cat photos are hardly the ultimate application for AI.

1 month ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 11

Hey guess what? If we weren't forcing everyone to do bullshit inessential work no one even needs to do, science would be way further along than AI could ever take it.

It would help if you just did the shit indigenous people asked also, but just not doing stupid crap no one needs to could replace everything you want AI to do better than humans

1 month ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

Yes, you are right. We already saw this happen during the coronavirus pandemic. Without demand, oil is worthless. If we forgo what we don’t need, supply chains collapse. Were it not for the US military, NASA could send a probe to Mars every 33 hours and do so for all eternity. The most valuable companies neither sell nor produce anything; instead, they hoard all our data and endless so on.

1 month ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Technology should advance humanity, yet those who control the money prevent this because they can never get enough.

1 month ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Any imgur user that defends AI can fuck off and go play on tubmlr. You don't belong here.

1 month ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 12

It's indespensible in tech now. Like it or not, you can't get hired if you are not using Agentic AI to code.

1 month ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 6

That doesn't make it indispensable, though.
That just harks back to the common sight of a company sinking thousands of dollars pursuit of a vague notion of "AI make line go up," their employees refuse to use it because it slows their work down, those ones get fired for their insolence, and a memo goes out about how you HAVE to use the boss's cool toy or else

Meanwhile, hackers nicely asked insta's support AI to switch the recovery emails on accounts to the hackers' email, and it went and did it

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

tumblr defends carefully crafted shitposts more than imgur does, by a large margin

1 month ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 1

Hey lets not attack tumblr like that.

1 month ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 1

Ah yes, the sign of the intelligent, open minded, caring people we Imgurians believe ourselves to be: Your opinion is wrong and I don’t want it anywhere I can see it.

1 month ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 9

I'm very, very conflicted on the use of AI. On a CONCEPTUAL level, I don't hate the idea of AI being used on an individual basis, making a D&D character portrait when you don't have the talent to draw / funds to commission for example. Once it starts *spreading*, once companies start using IT over PEOPLE for either artwork or mental work (or *both*) that's when the ick comes in...
And, of course, the fact that they went harder on Data Centers than on anything oil related lately...

1 month ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

That sums up my thoughts too. There's good and bad in it. One good use I saw was a board game that used it as placeholders for their Kickstarter campaign in order to get the funds to hire an artist.

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

The problem with these algorithms is that they have to steal in order to even function.

1 month ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

"Steal" is very subjective. Humans also learn from doing pattern recognition and reproducing what they see.

1 month ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 5

I do admit I left off the whole "how they got the database" part of it, woops X_X

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Does feel a bit like a losing battle. I'm getting increasingly downvoted for pointing out AI (especially text) and I see it appearing on the FP more and more.

I think dumps that include the odd AI image here and there also help to normalise it, but you often get told off especially if it is part of a dump by a popular poster.

1 month ago | Likes 204 Dislikes 11

There are popular posters? I can't name anyone other than myself here.

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

A lot of bots getting released nowadays.

1 month ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

The amount of money going into AI, there is absolutely no way to win. We can make jokes at them, but in one generation everyone will see us as boomers whining about the then current norms.

1 month ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

I feel ya. I get downvoted every single time I call out the use of a still-popular ableist slur (the r-word) on this site. Imgur still loves ableism.

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Never give up calling out the slop, my friend. You may be swimming upstream, but it's still the right thing to do. Don't accept that shit.

1 month ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Keep up the good work. I'm usually upvoting comments that call out AI unless it's wrong. Like stuff I know for sure isn't AI lol. There's some false positives out there.

To me, there's no reason to include AI even in dumps. Memes don't even need to be high quality so I dunno why AI needs to be involved.

1 month ago | Likes 41 Dislikes 3

That's the reasoning. "Memes don't need to be high quality so who cares if it's AI?" Eventually every meme will be AI :/

1 month ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Memes are a breeding ground for AI images, considering the previous method was using an image without copyrights.

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Just keep at it. Just remember the work is done as a collective effort between many people.

1 month ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

This happened to me too.

1 month ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 1

Yeah, the tech billionaires have successfully astroturfed an anti-anti-AI movement. "AI witch hunt, hurr durr! Detectors don't work! You people are so annoying! Why does it even matter! It's a tool like Photoshop! You can't stop progress!" etc. I wonder how many of those accounts are bots. Can't wait for the bubble to burst

1 month ago | Likes 69 Dislikes 2

The bubble bursting won't matter when on device AI is a common thing and easy for image gen

1 month ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

The AI on your devices is powered by hulking data centres that are too expensive to be worth it and as soon as the bubble bursts those things are going to be abandoned

1 month ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

Not the ones that use the 3090 on my computer, or the basic ones the use the neural processor on my phone

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I doubt generative AI fits all the necessary data on your device in order to run. When you ask it to generate an image it has to compare your prompt to trillions of images on an online database. If you're talking about the predictive feature on your phone that guesses what you're going to type next based on what you typed before, that's a little different.

1 month ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

The thing is, many AI detectors do in fact work poorly, because they rely on specific artifacts that are rarer and rarer. Perhaps they work on images because image-generators are keyed to the human eye so there's lots of technical behind-the-scenes stuff that you can pick up, but text-based AI detectors are so full of false positives they may as well not exist.

Shouldn't stop us from picking up the inconsistencies in actual AI slop content though.

1 month ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

It's an arms race for sure. I use six sites at this point, and I know which ones like to give false positives (like sightengine) or negatives (like isgen.ai). But first I look for AI weirdness and inconsistencies myself. I only fire up the AI detectors when I'm already reasonably sure that it's slop.

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It’s especially fun on Instagram because they will try to brigade you with their own sock puppets

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The amount of AI on instagram is very sad. Especially "reposters" often use AI to drum up a video description. It is mind numbing.

1 month ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Another new trend is having a cutout of something watching tv and tossing in a clip of whatever popular franchise with a “POV”. The boobs are less and less incentive each day.

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Bc frankly alot, and i mean A LOT, of ppl don't have a clue when they see AI. Kids or adults.

1 month ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I asked ai, "Is ai popular for majority of people?" The answer was not favorable.

1 month ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Would be a good idea to include your sources,

1 month ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

If by sources you meant examples of where people downvote me for pointing out AI: here you go: /gallery/bx5z45y/comment/2502791919

1 month ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

My sources to what?

1 month ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

I think they either mean where you've been seeing the AI - link the posts or what-have-you - or, more broadly, point out how you can tell something is AI. Part of the reason AI is becoming normalized is that it can often be difficult for someone to identify it if they don't know what they're looking for. Not everything has extra fingers or toes, or body parts smearing together.

1 month ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Just so happens I made an entire post about it not so long ago. /gallery/GXhYAfZ

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Boom, saved and faved. I would suggest putting this link in any content you're calling AI, but I'll bet that's gotten you spam reports in the past. There are quite a few people around here who do shoot from the hip.

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Anyone who visits Reddit should check out r/isitAI just to see how realistic it's getting. There's been entire dumps posted here comprised of AI slop but nobody called it out because it was incredibly difficult to tell.

1 month ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Not long ago I reached my threshold of being able to "see" if stuff was AI anymore, so I am extremely grateful to those who can and point it out. I know that I can't escape AI, but when I am given the opportunity to support human made stuff and redact support for machine made, I really want to.

1 month ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

I've been calling out AI slop on usersub for months now, luckily most of the time I get upvotes, but if I start getting downvoted I'll still keep doing it, cuz I have a LOT of karma to lose anyhow, so I don't care.

1 month ago | Likes 29 Dislikes 4

Just make sure it's really AI. Lots of artists are getting accused of being AI generated when they're not.

1 month ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Oh I know AI when I see it. I've yet to be proven wrong. I've gotten quite well at spotting it luckily.

1 month ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

I have a lot of problems with AI, but i've also seen a lot of artists, particularly newer ones, be falsely accused of using AI and get subsequently harassed off the internet. Especially as AI has gotten better at minimising the egregious mistakes it was obvious for a few years ago, i see more and more people say something is AI because they see a mistake that is just common in newer artists

1 month ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 1

Hell, even on Imgur, towards artists that posted WIPs and videos of their drawing process.
(Granted, AI will soon be able to do that too)

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Yes, I did once see a wip video that I'm 100% convinced was AI (mostly because it was a recording of the digital drawing pad's screen, so basically just an animation of the drawing being created - and it looked hella AI.)

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah, I had an interaction with someone yesterday on Imgur about that - they kept yelling "AI" because the hands and perspective looked "off" to them. I pointed out that these are literally areas where real artists struggle. Nevermind that the image didn't even *look* like AI, or that it was from October 2023 (when it literally wouldn't have been possible to make it with AI). They deleted their original comment and thus the interaction (or perhaps blocked me - either way, it's not there anymore)

1 month ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 1

The interaction is still there. The user blocked you.

1 month ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

The whole "I don't know what I'm talking about but I'm going to yell 'AI'" is really hurtful to people who are trying to point out actual instances.

1 month ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 1

Which is great for people who want to discredit others and sow doubts. It takes little to fake a screenshot of a detector saying something is AI. And no matter how it is taken the AI people win. Either it causes people to doubt the detector more or people start questioning if they should jump on the bandwagon so quickly or at all. This war is lost, there are thousands of accounts posting every single hour, drowning every site you can imagine with all sorts images, false arguments, etc.

3 weeks ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

(hurtful in the sense that it harms progress, not personally hurtful)
