Everything that I've seen suggests that the Andes virus variant while can be transferred from human to human, is only able to do that during the period where they have a fever and it also requires relatively close contact.

I doubt it, but that's because the virus isn't thought to be as contagious as COVID. I'm not watching closely, but so far it seems that human to human transmission has happened in confined spaces with prolonged exposure (cruise ship, airplane cabin). If it continues to spread, I'll pay closer attention.

This particular strain is the rate one where it can pass from person to person, however, the contagion rate is really low. Not airborne, requires prolonged contact with infected bodily fluids, short latency period, etc. Possible to pass between family members but that's really about it.

Unfortunately, the cruise ship in question was either coming from, or the people who appeared to have started the outbreak are from Argentina, where the Andes hantavirus, the only form of it that can be passed from person to person, originates.
The "plus side" is that Hantavirus is normally too deadly to be capable of mass spread.

Hanta's been around for quite a while. Covid became a problem because it was new and we didn't know what its characteristics were; that's why the response was to just shut everything down until we could figure it out, but too many idiots sabotaged it.
We know how Hanta spreads and how it behaves, so we can go straight to quarantining people if needed instead of letting morons sneeze on each other in barbershops.

In addition to deadliness, it’s just not communicable through casual contact. Yes, the Andes strain *can* pass person-to-person, but it doesn’t do so easily or often. Coughing and sneezing, handshakes, and so on, just won’t do it. Swapping bodily fluids is necessary.

Yes, but, a sneeze into a mouth could cause bodily fluid transfers. It’s still possible through casual contact, just very unlikely. stay away from unhygienic people and wash your hands and casual contact should be fine. We put our hands to our mouths subconsciously more often than we think.

Every news outlet is going to sensationalize every "Hanta virus" case now, when it's only this Argentinian variant that can spread person to person, and that spread is typically limited to "people in very close contact for an extended period of time" like a wife or a cruise ship cabin steward/waiter. And usually you die before you can spread it to too many other people.

Yes, but known cases are appearing here and there and I find this concerning. It was the same at the beginning of COVID, where we were expecting something like SARS but we had random people getting sick with it around the world. I still doubt it would get as bad as COVID, but it looks more contagious than only during prolonged close contact. Time will tell!
