It plays like firefly meets fallout new vegas. Its very firefly. Look out for the cows. Listen to what people say and read stuff you find. It's an adventure with FPS in it, not the other way around like fallout 4. (I do also like fallout 4)

Application uses excessive resources. Game selection is lacking. Lack of customization for install locations you can't just move an entire directory. Poor messages and friend services. No browser. They JUST added collections so you can organize your games. No workshop equivalent. A competent Steam competitor would be good but every launcher is multiple YEARS behind. It's just not even close.

One of them being buying the rights to crowdfunded games that people already paid for and then making them epic exclusives, making peoples promised steam keys into epic keys, and then buying exclusive rights to as many big AAA sequels as they can to try and force people over.

Also, I'm not sure what useful data they are even harvesting. Don't use it to look at any games other than the free ones. I'm sure it's looked at the specs of my rig and things of that nature, but I say fair trade for the hours of gaming I have gotten.

It's ok. They should have used a new protagonist instead of Garrett. They found a way to piss off both old and new fans. The plot was .. oof... and Garrett creates most of the bullshit situations he has to deal with. The one-way doors prevenging back-tracking sucked a big one. But, it was an ok game. Just got too caught up in jedi powers and bullshit trying to cater to a new, younger demographic while neglecting the old fans.

To be fair to devs of crowd funded games, that check is like a guaranteed (I hope) way to at least break even. It's hard to pass up a safety net like that. Like larger studios can suck a dick when they do shit like this, but when you are small to the point that you HAVE to crowdfund to get the capital to make your game(especially since it's not too uncommon that you end up needing more than you raised) it sucks but I understand

I understand why they do it. I know there's a certain comfort knowing you have money guaranteed. But the thing is, as a consumer, I find the practice repellent, and I did not enjoy the half assed way I had to jump through hoops to get a refund. If the devs don't release a game on the platform I prefer--usually Steam or GoG--then I simply don't buy it. If the devs act fucky to secure Epic dollars, then I probably won't purchase even after exclusivity ends. Companies aren't entitled to my cash.

I'm sorry you feel that way. 30% is the industry standard, and Valve does take a lot of costs on themselves, including honoring third party CD keys, server infrastructure, and so on. I'd like to point out that if anyone uses the Unreal Engine, Epic also takes a bite out of each sale as well. Epic isn't offering 12% out of altruism--if they ever gain a sizeable marketshare, you can believe they'll raise prices the moment they think they can get away with it.

Them being “on the side of small developers” is certainly a facade they want to keep until they can grow as big as Steam. There’s no doubt in my mind that they’d happily raise that profit cut as high as they could if they were in any position like Valve or Steam is. Hell, they've already shown how shitty they'll be. EGS was reading data from Steam for the longest time. That's not just shitty behavior--that's downright creepy. Sweeney has also shown that he won't hesitate to break contracts if he thinks he can litigate his way out of it for bigger profits. At the end of the day, I simply don't trust Epic, between Sweeney's two faced attitude and Tencent being their biggest investor.

Steam only takes the cut if it’s purchased from their storefront. Devs are free to generate keys and sell them elsewhere to completely circumvent that. There is no monopoly, Steam doesn’t go out of it’s way to buy and suppress every competitor (unlike Epic). All of them do that themselves because they’re too greedy and incompetent to make anything that comes remotely close to Steam’s user friendliness and user experience. Epic is the one trying to push your “Monopoly and corporate dystopia”.

They have a history of pretty big security breaches, plus a lot of gamers hate that their main method for getting new users has been to buy the PC distribution rights for anticipated games and forcing people to go through their storefront to play them. There are also a lot of people (like myself) who just hate the idea of having to download another gaming client.

One of the very few games I ever pre ordered was Mechwarrior 5. They promised a Steam release on launch day. Epic bribed them to delay the Steam release for a year. The publisher lost a metric shit ton of sales and generated a load of ill will, and people are still pissed at Epic over it. They've done that to a few games.

Yes they cannot give the game away for free without agreeing this with the game owners. Same thing goes for exclusivity. Game developers choose to go exclusive with Epic because they get paid to do this. We need money for food and housing like everyone else and making a good game takes like 5 years. Although it's fair to go through a distributor that offers you more. Steam does not have a monopoly. There are no contracts or systems locking users or publishers to the platform. Gamers simply prefer it because other platforms never implement the same features that made Steam big, but at any time they could've.

It has been invested by tencent so what this is the same for every other company out there when they get investment some sources are questionable. Steve irwin had dodgy investments but he used the money to do good he was famous for saying he does not care where the money comes from as long as it gets pumped into conservation. As long as the majority owner who is Tim Sweeney does not do anything dodgy there is nothing to worry about and he has a solid track record so far in terms of equity.

Some (sadly few) folks just have principles to not support companies who fuck around on you. Yeah, Epic gives free shit, but it's only done to lure you in and build good will to exploit later, and you're giving them the free publicity they want by doing this. In the thread, I'll elaborate on my own personal reason for disliking them, but I won't go and tell people "Don't do it" either - you make your own decisions, y'all do you. I won't and I will always note them as a problem.

I hate that they bought Rocket League. They've been grinding it into the dirt ever since. The fun events have basically disappeared or become shadows of what they used to be. Not to mention making it free to play so the smurfing is out of control.

My biggest reason is their Exclusivity deals, particularly the permanent ones. There was a little Monster Hunter clone game called Dauntless years ago; they had their own Patcher/Launcher and were running great on their own for quite awhile. Then Epic showed up and offered to do their cross-platform work for them, in exchange for being a permanent Epic Exclusive. They shut down their PERFECTLY WORKING PC LAUNCHER and made us have to install Epic to continue playing.

(Permanent) Exclusivity is a poison from the Console industry that should not exist on PCs, period. It only breeds haves and havenots. Even timed ones hurt, e.g; Final Fantasy XVI is PS5 only, and then complained about how sales weren't up to snuff, while ignoring FF fans clamoring for a PC Release that we won't see for awhile yet. Meanwhile, FFXIV just opened on XBox and is surging in numbers. Companies who limit their scope suffer, only Epic profits from this.

Yup. Even with the timed exclusives it usually ends up killing the game or drastically decreasing their popularity. Control, Metro Exodus, The Outer Worlds, etc. all games that deserve so much more (though Metro has slowly been getting there). Looking right now, I just saw two games that I've been looking forward have already released, but they're exclusives: Sins of a Solar Empire 2 and Star Trek: Resurgence. Also waiting for Alan Wake 2. Fuck Epic and their exclusives horseshit.

While I do think it's sad that the alternative to Epic is pretty much a steam monopoly, Timed exclusives are terrible for the industry and the communities. I loved Destiny 1, but God damn Sony's timed exclusives were bullshit; there was content and weapons locked for PS players on year 1 that Xbox players didn't get until Y2. Then I think Y2+ content just never came over, or if it did Destiny 2 was already a thing.

The PS players hated it because after a while it made things difficult for them too with certain Exotics being barred from Xurs inventory, a number of the exclusives weren't even that good so Xbox players had a higher chance to get good items, and content creators always had to find substitutes when giving tips if the best equipment was an exclusive. Exclusivity hurts everyone

My recommendation then would be to get the free games and download them, then. They lose money doing this. I have over 300 games from Epic now, and they don't even have my payment information, i have never given them 1 cent. Easily 100 of those 300 games are recentish AAA games, too, and a lot of the indie ones are fun as hell.

I just don't trust that Tencet is a major stakeholder and there were numerous reports of the software sending an obscene amount of telemetry. I like that the founder wants to give game developers a larger portion of profits, but not a fan of using exclusives to attract people (even if for a limited time, not fond of consoles for the same reason). I use GOG as well, they are preferred for me in many cases. To each their own, but the criticism is valid, being a dick about it isn't though.

Ironically, the thing that I like best about Epic is what they've done to limit exclusivity by litigating against the monopolies of Google and Apple. Epic has been the single best actor at fighting against these tyrannies, and it's wonderful for anyone who wants options on phones. Historically, I do most purchases on GOG, but I kind of want to throw Epic some money

Nope, the mobile thing was related to sales within Fortnite, if I remember correctly, and how Epic fought to have them legally recognized as internal and unrelated to the app store (i.e.: not giving Google and Apple a share of the profits from in-game purchases.)

Steam is a business and not a data mining aspect of China's shadow war against the west. Steam offers great sales regularly and it's up to the publishers if they wanted to give their game away, not steam. It's like complaining a farmers market isn't giving away free stuff. They provide the venue and infrastructure, nothing more.

They give away free stuff because it's the only way they can attract people to their god-awful game client. They don't have consistent controller support, they require an internet connection, it's slow as crap, they have nowhere near as big of a selection as Steam does.

Ark Ascended is on sale for like $28 on Steam after a free to play weekend. Not sure if thats a dev thing or not but I wasnt going to pay $70 for a game I already own. Still bitter they came out with it instead of finishing Ark 2. Anyway, thanks for the heads up about Outer Worlds. Its on my wishlist :}

Devs decide what they do with their games. Devs can choose to opt into to big sales to reach a wider audience but it’s still their choice.
