I work as a busboy at a breakfast joint in
New Jersey. This is a picture from a year or two ago, it looks the same now, just much less crowded. Today, this guy came in holding a stuffed monkey puppet. My manager said "Table for one?" and he pointed to his monkey and said "Two." She led him to his table, and when his waiter came over he ordered pancakes for himself, and a "banana daiquiri" for his monkey.
I had to look up what that was. I can't
imagine that tasting good, but I guess his monkey had niche tastes. It was a moot point anyways because it's a dry town, but I digress. Anyways, I decided that I had to talk to this person, but I was a little scared to ask about the monkey. I mean, what if the guy is crazy and he just gets mad at me?
I decided to take my chances though. I nervously asked "so, what is their name?" and he turns his head. My heart is pounding. He grabs his monkey, extends his arm, and starts singing "B, O, N-G-O, Bongo!" I burst out laughing because this is the most adorable thing I've seen all day. I asked Bongo why he's got the mask on and he replied "I get in trouble for not wearing my mask" in this ridiculously cute high-pitched voice. The guy's name is Rocky and apparently he travels everywhere with this little puppet stuffie named Bongo. I asked him for a selfie and...
You can see how happy I was when he said yes. Well, HE said yes, but his monkey demanded two bananas in return as his image is sensitive. I BEGGED my manager to let me oblige him, but she was just as interested as I was so she said yes right away. I brought him his bananas and I've never seen such a happy person in all my life. His monkey did a little dance in the air and thanked me profusely.
Maybe like five minutes after we stopped talking, when I was walking by his table, he waves me over and hands me this book. My heart melted when I realized it was his book, with his name on it. I teared up and thanked him. It's a collection of poetry that he wrote while working as a substitute teacher/performance artist in America's poorest city. When I got home that night I opened up the book and started crying.
I blacked out his email address which he was nice enough to append, but I transcribed everything else he wrote because the handwriting is a little wonky.
"Dear Joe (my name),
Thank you so much for appreciating Bongo and bringing him his favorite food group Bananas. He hasn't let go of it! Have a wonderful holiday and Winter Solstice (Bongo adds)
Your pals Rocky + Bongo (featured in poem on page 3)
'Yawp'!"
Thank you so much, monkey man. You made my day and I will cherish this book for the rest of my life.
When people say don't talk to strangers, most of the time it's good advice. But sometimes it can be a fascinating and delightful experience, so take a chance next time you see that one person who piques your interest.
By the way, here's the poem he mentioned. I love humans so much. Have a great day, Imgur
FP edit: Thank you all so much for the kind words!! This is my first post and I never thought it would get this much attention. You guys are the best!

Yes lol, judging by his poetry alone he's led a very interesting life. Apparently they gave him the Camden County Freedom Medal in 2019

“YAWP!”
1BitPixels
1/2 You know, now that I think about it, yawp was the word that Walt Whitman used in that famous poem. "I too am untranslatable, I sound my

2/2 barbaric yamp over the roofs of the world." Rocky makes several references to Whitman in his book. Thank you for helping me see this!

Thanks @op for getting the courage to talk to an odd stranger.. You made so many people happy!
1BitPixels
I'm so exciting about all the comments I'm getting!! This is my first post and I didn't expect this at all, it makes me very happy

A daiquiri is pretty much a margarita but with rum instead of tequila.. I was a bartender for like 4 years
ElbowDeepInAJedi
That guy (and his monkey) probably have like 200 bananas at home. What animal drinks whiskey so I can bring one of those around?
benjwolf04
Mostly just humans I think
fennecbutt
His handwriting isn't wonky, it's very nice cursive!

Dry town? I thought ye we're the land of the free, how does that work?
1BitPixels
In NJ (idk about other states) it's up to the towns. Nobody's thirsty though, they have liquor stores at all 3 bridges lmao (island town)

SayRamrod basically got it! I'm the guy that cleans tables for waitresses so that they can spend more time serving. Fun job, decent pay

Dry towns still exist?
idrinkcheapbeer
There is sort of an urban legend that the most profitable liquor store in the state is right across the bridge from Ocean City.
VinnieJonesDiary
*googles 'Dry Town'* What the fuck America??? What kind of puritanical bullshit is this? You really have fuck all freedom don't ye?
BeerTraveler33
Yep, there are even dry counties (mostly in the south). Of course everyone stocks up on booze right across the bridges.
Holzter
My college town used to be dry. That changed in the past 15, 20 years
papertiger09
Strawberry daiquiris are actually pretty good and a common drink. A casino here makes them in a slushie machine.
1BitPixels
Now THAT sounds tasty
snidedj
What does 'dry town' mean? Nowhere sells booze?
1BitPixels
Yes, especially at 9am at a breakfast place lol
snidedj
What about if I want a beer with breakfast if I'm hungover???? I would move house
WhosCatIsItAnyway
Yes.
spookyactionatadistance
Wait. Restaurants are still opened for sitdown ??? That's messed up
WhosCatIsItAnyway
Something like 25% capacity is allowed. Still makes me nervous
spookyactionatadistance
In MTL we were at 50% this summer but they closed back up 2 months ago. Now I'm pretty sure we'll be going full lockdown before xmas
1BitPixels
Yeah, I figure that since I'm low risk if I don't take the job then someone less careful will. I do my best to keep everything very clean
SarahTheOtherOne
That monkey has good taste. Banana daiquiris are amazing
1BitPixels
I wasn't going to before, but now that I have 2 recommendations I'll try it at the next opportunity. Thank you for your wisdom banana woman
SarahTheOtherOne
Banana Woman lol. Has a nice ring to it. Sounds like an imgur superhero name. Banana Woman here to bring a banana for scale!
Counterfit
Definitely sounds like a One Punch Man world hero.

Hey neighbor! Thank you for the kind words, you should stop by Uncle Bill's in OC some time!
thesoundcicadasmake
OC is my favorite Jersey shore beach town. Uncle Bill's is always on the list for breakfast joints during our stay.
iambrose
I love seeing Small World moments on here!
thesoundcicadasmake
People from NJ get a bad wrap but we really are awesome. Don't believe what you see on TV.
ItsDandySpaceDandy
Fun fact, most if not all of the people on Jersey Shore were not from here.
W92Baj
As a brit, this is all getting confusing
ItsDandySpaceDandy
Sorry, we took a shit load of your town/city names and mixed them with Native names in the North East US.
idrinkcheapbeer
This place is in a touristy beach town like Brighton or Bornemouth. It's honestly not very close to Essex county, in NJ distance terms.
ireallylovehippos
I love Essex county - I live in NYC but visit south orange often ❤️
ItsDandySpaceDandy
Cait and Abby's. Their babka is... it makes me say this, except with babka.
ItsDandySpaceDandy
Ayy, I'm right next door to South Orange. I'm gonna guess you take the train in. Stop by the bakery there. They have amazing stuff.
ireallylovehippos
My bf was raised there and I have friends there. I wish I could live in Maplewood. It’s dreamy. He loves Town Hall deli.
ItsDandySpaceDandy
Who doesn't love the Town Hall Deli, and yeah those two towns have a certain... Feel. Kinda like Montclair as well.
ireallylovehippos
His sister got married at The Woodland - that’s a fab place to party or see a show. RIP live music :-(
Esdog
What is a dry town?
1BitPixels
It means they don't serve alcohol there, Ocean City has been that way since it was founded by some religious dudes who were against drinking
FrankenstienFarts
No alcohol
Esdog
In the whole town? What do you do for fun?
Ruik
Get hopped up on religion and slather pine cones in peanut butter and birdseed for the wildlife.

There are seven Uncle Bill's restaurants on the Jersey Shore. https://www.unclebillspancakehouse.com/locations

Manco and Mancos fan or nahh?? Always a polarizing pizza spot
idrinkcheapbeer
Don't fucking eat there. Scumbag criminals and covid spreaders. Seriously, I wish they got shut down.
IllTryToKeepItInteresting
Yea I know about their tax evasion and whatnot, didn’t hear about the Covid stuff though
1BitPixels
Yessss! The owners of Uncle Bill's and Manco's are great friends, our employees get pizza from them every Sunday!
1BitPixels
A Native I see! I'm down in OC, I didn't even know we had an Uncle Bill's in Long Beach lol. Big chain, they're all owned by 3 brothers
Youcanbekittycat2000orwhatever
As soon as you said dry town and breakfast I knew it had to be Uncle Bills.
