Do you animate at night to get the headlight glare?

Kept reading "lightning". Little disappointed.
MissJagwired
Anyone who's done 3D renderings has total respect for the people who can do lighting well. Bravo, I'll go watch your movie now.
Vacationdad
You won’t regret it, it’s seriously one of the funniest and most enjoyable movies I’ve seen in a while
ThereAreChameleonsEverywhereProbably
Anyone who's done any kind of art knows how important, and difficult, lighting is. So much respect.
lozeldatkm
I'm rendering my first ever test animation in Daz 3D as we speak. 11 seconds long, 80 out of 330 frames rendered so far and 19 hours elapsed
And I've got a pretty decent graphics card
drakewarnock
Lighting is one of the most important parts of making a scene look natural. I play a lot of video games, and the difference between 1/
2/ 'current' and 'next generation' graphics almost always comes down to how well the lighting is done. But it's the kind of job that if 2/
3/ it's done well no one will notice.

Those "before" shots are all what baby cartoons look like, exactly. O.o (I say this as an Uncle to two baby girls)
beauFORTRESS
I'm a recent animation grad, and I watched some 3D kids shows with my roommate's kid. The lighting and animation all looks super basic,
which gives me hope for finding my first job in the industry, cuz there are always studios making more kid's content.
I wish you the best of luck! I'm a graduate film student with a screenwriting background. So I feel ya!

Read it as lightning first and was thinking this guy sucks when there was no lightning in any of the pictures

Good art has many layers, donkey.

That was a good movie too. The guy with the cybernetics had a surprisingly dark back story. Ben Mendelsohn is a great actor.
AntRam95
Sound track sucked, “rocket like rocket fuel” whoever wrote that really didn’t care
I think it was from Sony and a lot of their animation has been visually beautiful with big name actors but they're not trying as hard->
as Dreamworks or Illumination to compete with Disney
TheDayTheBrainStoodStill
Mendelsohn's my favorite kind of actor - the kind who whatever you're watching, when they show up you know they'll act the hell out of it.
If you haven't seen the Outsider series on HBO, I recommend it. He is very good and plays opposite Jason Bateman.
Tinyfish3
Dumb question, in the one with the boy and monster on the plain does the light on the boy’s face in the before not count?

Starting photographers don't understand how important light is, either. Once you realize that, your photos will improve 1000%.
giveittomestraightlikeapearcidermadefrom100percentpears
I concur. And I still know experienced photographers who think using artificial lighting is cheating.. WHAT!?
Looking at people like Gregory Crewdson or Jeff Wall. I mean, they hire to do lights.. But both use it amazingly!
solemnwar
One thing I learned when I was taking artfundamentals is how much goes into making something look "good", going beyond the subject.
Lighting, composition, colour theory, so many things can turn an "okay" image to a great image.

Very cool.

Pre-lighting in some of these look like Toy Story 1
Alexon
Thats not really "pre-lighting" thats more like preview mode, no effects at all.
That's because CG workstations these days can run Toy Story 1 visuals (or much better really) in real time, enough to be used as previews.
Neat +1

What is rigging in CG
LZorro
When you apply a "skeleton" to a character to make it easier to manipulate for animation. Also helps to prevent some weird unnatural bending
MPinky
Dude fuuuuuuuck rigging. People who do that shit and make it so it's not a spikey mess are actually wizards.
Rum0r
As a computer art dude, a good rig for a model can be hundreds of dollars sometimes.
DannyDevitoBurritoBandito
I work as a DOP in television. Always wondered how similar this is to working with real life practical lighting?

Surfacing/Texture artist here. All the love to you lighters! Great job.
Oh yeah! You can't underestimate the power of a great texture map!
It's a beautiful thing when all the parts work together, and make the pipeline sing. Animators especially wonderful component.
DrPepperandChocolate
I took an animation course in college and it was the few weeks of lighting that gave me mad respect for lighting. Ridiculously difficult.
ObscureReferencing
Same thing for real time rendering in gaming. Throw good lighting at shit assets, and it's gonna be beautiful. See Minecraft w/ Ray Tracing
JustDontCare
I think misunderstood. Also in games it’s an under appreciated art form.
RedDirt3D
As someone with a background in 3D modeling and animation, and who currently teaches this to high schoolers, the difference good lighting...
Makes in a scene is one of the first things that I show them.
Always! What do you teach? I've always been a C4D man, but I learned MAYA and Lightwave originally.
We use Maya and 3ds Max. First semester is modeling, second is animation. Loads of fun, and pairs well with my game design class!
tyrfin
Just hearing about MAYA gives me fucking nested-menus-inside-a-wheel PTSD flashbacks
It was so bad. You needed a degree in computer science to use that crazy software.
AmorHudd
That's literally bringing life to the scenes. wtf.
GoddamnitClown
To be fair, that is what 'to animate' means.
To be fair, without solid character modeling, scene modeling, SFX, and visual direction, there's nothing to rig and light.
mrlongjohn
Not to downplay these, but the first rule I learned of 3D is that good lighting can hide bad modeling/textures. Lighting is that important.
Dinos91
It's all important, leave out any ingredient in a cake and it's not a good cake
