Well that sucks.

Damn it. :( She was good people. Her wife passed away last year.

Oh wow. She was a legend

A Discord server I'm in actually remembers her for the fanfiction she did as well https://www.fanfiction.net/u/268964/burgerbecky

Met her at Hero Con last year. She was the absolute sweetest, funniest person you could ever hope to chat with. This is positively heartbreaking to read.

Rest In Power, you beautiful human being!

8 months ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

she also (nearly) single-handedly rescued the terrible 3DO Doom port, despite impossible odds: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yxF1_wg2d_Q

8 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

She was married to Jennell Jaquays, another transgender game designer, who passed away in 2024.

8 months ago | Likes 69 Dislikes 2

Hm, she died at age 68 and Rebecca at 64.

America's healthcare system at work I'd say.

8 months ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Arguably the more accomplished spouse, especially if you care about D&D more than PC gaming. And painted as well as the other TSR staff artists, at least Easley Tramp and Caldwell if not quite as well as Elmore

8 months ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 2

I still have my copy of Central Casting: Heroes of Legend that I bought 35 years ago. She was working on a remake when she died.

8 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Wait THAT Jaquays? Oh that's a pretty awesome partnership, shame they both passed.

8 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Awww. I just saw this fantastic video about Wolfenstein 3D with her, which she was part of porting https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DNC83JpCbQw

8 months ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 1

She also worked on the disastrous 3DO port of Doom, which she talks about here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y_do6lL7ueQ

RIP my dear. We had a good run.

Holy shit what a headline! We should all be so lucky to have such an epitaph. RIP you legend.

I knew her when she was Bill, back in Baltimore in the early 80's. Sad to see her go so soon.

"legendary"

8 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 13

She was the co-founder of Interplay, one of the top PC games studios of the 90s, creators of games like Bard's Tale, Wasteland, Fallout, Battle Chess, and a lot more. She personally worked on 51 different games as a programmer from 1983 to 2015.

Just because you don't recognize someone's name doesn't mean they aren't important.

Her cancer fundraiser is now paying for her funeral makes this all the more sadder

She was a co-founder of Logicware, which ported this awesome gem to the Mac and PC from the 3DO.

And the 3DO version of Doom too (not Doom 2)

Nice

So cross-ports of nearly every important big old game. Awesome.

8 months ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

RIP. She worked on Descent, which was such a brilliant game and was a co-founder of Interplay Games. If you played PC games in the early-to-mid-90s, you would have come across some of her work.

RIP, Burger.

I remember being home from school because I was sick and I tried to play Descent. I vomited from the vertigo

8 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Used to play Descent with my buddy across the street over dialup. Great times. We were quite good at it, which was satosfying since many couldn't comprehend or keep up with 3D movement controls at the time.

8 months ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I have doubts most would be much better now.

8 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah, space and flight sims were fire in the 90s then just kind of died off into a niche genre unfortunately.

8 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Thank you for saving me the time looking it up. Definitely played a few Interplay titles.

8 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Descent was such an utterly unique and wonderful game, completely before it's time. Sublevel Zero is a great spiritual successor worth a mention (though overload looks like it might be more faithful)!

8 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That game was the reason why I had to buy a joystick. It was one of my favorite games for a very long time

8 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Owz descent was so good.
Need to re-buy it and play with my vr-rig.

8 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I loved decent. I tried playing recently and got vertigo

8 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The music in Descent started me on Type O Negative... Damn I loved that series so much. "Good luck, Material Defender. Dravis OUT!"

8 months ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Thanks for the childhood, Rebecca.

8 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Descent 2 multiplayer was so much goddam fun.

8 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

She basically single handedly made the 3do port of doom in mere months.
It's one of the worst ports but considering how little she had to work with, the fact she got it shipped at all was incredible.

I present, the Corley... Minivan!

8 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

"Well you know I'd be on one right now, sir, if it weren't for my...DESTABILIZING inner ear condition."

8 months ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

The music for that game was awesome

8 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Descent was my first full 3d game. I still love that game.

8 months ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 0

Ditto!

8 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Wasn’t that the game that made you freaking want to puke flying in the vent shafts?

8 months ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

I get pretty motion sick from FPS but descent didn't do it for whatever reason

8 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

interplay made a lot good things, or founded subs that made good ones. It brought us fallout but sadly they sold it to bethesda later, earthworm jim. Baldurs gate, Wasteland also, they were the ones to release Warcraft in Europe. . MDK any Lost vikings may not be known so much, but I enjoyed them a lot. The Interplay logo was a sure indicator to have a lot of fun.

8 months ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

Some solid games. MDK, Lost vikings, Baldurs Gate, Earthworm Jim, Planescape: Torment, Stonekeep... So many hours of my life, jeez

8 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Whoa blast from the past...I LOVED Lost Vikings

8 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Didnt they make Redneck Rampage as well?

8 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

thats a game I don't know, was that even sold in Europ, it sound spretty Murican.

8 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I always thought it was moreof a parody of american redneck culture, thought it was european, but devs where from LA apparantly.

Played it tons (im dutch, but im pretty sure i got it from a CrazyBytes cd), same with more build engine games like Blood, played these games a lot on local network

8 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Descent, which was the basis for Descent Freespace. The sequels Freespace 2s source code in turn was the basis for Wing Commander Saga, which is possibly my favourite game ever.

And just like that, you find out you owe someone or their existence had an impact on your life.

Rest in Peace and thanks for everything!

8 months ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I loved Freespace! Such an amazing series!

8 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Thanks! I was like.. Who? Why doesn’t it mention games?
But interplay rocked, so many good games. Blackthorne, another world, lost vikings, earthworm jim and so on.

8 months ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Goddamn did I ever love Blackthorne growing up. Played it on PC, the music in the mines in the first level is forever in my head.

8 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Interplay didn't make Lost Vikings, they just published it. Lost vikings wasmade by the founders of Blizzard.

8 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

EARTHWORM JIM?!? This remains the single funniest game I have ever played, period. I have played several of her games, then. Bless her, she helped develop me as a gamer. Raising my glass to you, my dear lady.

8 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Earthworm Jim was also only published by Interplay and developed by another studio. Interplay is mainly known for the Fallout games. But they published many other great games.

8 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Ah... But what about rock n roll racing?.. Damn it... They published some great games though

8 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Funnily enough the Fallout series had another legendary gay icon as one of its design leads in Tim Cain

8 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I do not have words to describe my love for the Descent series. If you want a more modern spin on the game, check out Overload.

8 months ago | Likes 65 Dislikes 1

Holy shit. Overload is actually Descent 4. Apparently the head of the company got all the old Descent developers back together to make this one. Gonna get it right na!

8 months ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Thank you! I Loved all of the Descents... well at least the first 2. I bought them each the weeks they came out. I've never heard of Overload. It looks just like a modern version of Descent. I can't wait to play. Thanks again.

8 months ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Overload was made by a few of the original Descent devs. Not sure if Rebecca was part of the team or not, but regardless it's a great successor to the original

8 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Sweet, I loved Descent but hadn't heard of Overload - will absolutely check it out! Cheers for the heads up!

Question: How many game developers do you think you can name without searching? I'm not talking directors, artists, composers or writers. I mean people who make games work on a technical level. I doubt it's more than five. Maybe you're just ignorant?

8 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Is this the equivalent of not being a fan of a band unless you can name all the songs on the first album? Very gatekeeper of you

8 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 3

The point is that if you don't know anyone who works in game development then your criteria for judging someone's credentials is meaningless and just makes you sound like an insufferable asshole.

8 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

A person also does not need your ideal of legendary status for her death to mean something or for others to be made aware of her passing. She was human, she was taken by cancer, show some hint of empathy.

8 months ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 1

Or just simply reading the headline.

8 months ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 1

I did. Legendary. Someone legendary should not require me to search the internet.

8 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 15

Someone so blatantly flaunting the title of "Legendary Twat" should have already been on my radar, yet I've only just now spotted them.

Curious.

8 months ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 1

Ok. Good one v

8 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 4

There are legendary people you have never heard of. The world doesn't revolve around you and your personal interests. Don't be a cunt.
