The best/worst part about this is that when the question of how to help homeless people comes up, the conservative answer (in lieu of tax-funded programs) is almost ALWAYS 'charitable organizations' and donation funded shelters and the like. And then this happens. Because to them being homeless is not the result of failings of society, it's the result of failings of the individual. It's a punishment, meted out by God, and anything they say is just a smokescreen to keep from scaring votes away.

It's a rage bait article. The tickets were for not having permits and not leaving the location for another half mile away that would be safer. They refused and got ticketed. The city wasn't preventing them from feeding people, just at that location because it brought violence and threats to visitors.

While I totally believe you, the reality is that cities try to hide their homeless away from the "regular" people and visitors to the city an in attempt to maintain an image. Another half a mile might make the food inaccessible to those people. So it's still problematic, because instead of just housing the unhoused, they send police to do this bullshit.

If you ever dealt with the homeless, a lot of them have drug or mental health issues and bring a lot of different behaviors. Many of them don't want help. So it causes a lot of social issues, especially when violence is involved. There is no simple solution.

I've performed at the Harrisburg one twice in the band I used to be in. It's a wonderful event aimed at promoting community and providing food to people who need it. Fun fact: in two separate supreme court cases the opinion was "no". It is not the obligation of the police to protect or help or assist anybody, unless they are already in police custody. They literally do not exist to "protect and serve" they exist to be enforcers of capitalism and the debt cycle. Fuck the police, all of them.

you're right about everything except that their job literally isnt to enforce laws. Their job is to enforce what they think the law is, with no actual need to study and remember it. So says the courts. So you end up with a system that weeds out people that think the law is the law and leaves only cops who think the law means stepping on ordinary people to keep the sheep in line

The decision is more nuanced than that, but essentially true. The police have no *individual* duty to protect any specific person. They cannot be there when you are in danger, except through sheer luck, so they have no duty to be. They are a general deterrent to crime, nothing more. Except, if they require you to be somewhere specific, then they do by virtue of ordering you to be there take on the responsibility of protecting you there. So they must protect prisoners, but not the public.

It makes sense to me because I understand government. The code that creates the citation was a by-product of the city’s and county health departments. In reality, it is so the distribution of food is handled by contracts sprinkled among friends. Churches will not charge them to do feed people. After Hurricane Harvey, the local government shut down the FREE food distribution; magically, after, but before, the firm that had the contract with The American Red Cross could take over.

When the trucks could get into the city, it was Mayor Turner that stopped the FREE food distribution. The police chief is appointed by the mayor in Houston. It’s an appointed position. The Democrats have run H-Town since the 60’s. Mayor Turner since ‘15 which is why SJL is running for mayor. Not ONE single Republican has led the Mayor’s office or police department in 10 plus years. If you are really concerned, can read, and are sincere, you would properly assign blame. I doubt you’re either.

Fun fact, only Democrats have been mayor (and mayors appoint police chiefs) for most of the last 60 years. Shutting down free Christian-based or any other-based food distribution ensure that only Turner’s and SLJ’s friends get to distribute the food and the money goes round. Republicans have many faults and do a lot of stupid things, but the Democrats own the PD’s in most cities for the last many decades. That’s on the Dems.

They were serving in front of the library without a permit. Threats and violence were increasing to the visitors of the library. So the city gave them a location closer to the police station less than half a mile away so it would be safer for visitors of the library. They refused to move and got cited. They weren't prevented from feeding the homeless, just feeding at that location.
