He always looks like he's having fun beeing bad and powerful. Villians interestingly enough don't do that so often but many of the great ones who aren't just entities like Sauron or Vader do.
Voldemort, Hans Landa, the Joker, Hannibal Lectar and basically all of Curry's roles, they enjoy what they're doing, which makes them all the more enticing.
Movie producers love to have a British guy as the baddie for one major reason; international sales. Almost every country in the world will readily accept the idea that the bad guy is British, as at some point in their country's history Britain has invaded, occupied, or otherwise tried to economically dominate them.

After watching British, European, & Scandinavian TV & film, returning to much of Hollywood feels like a downgrade.The acting is more natural, writing sharper, & storytelling more grounded & character-driven. American productions feel formulaic, with heavier reliance on spectacle, predictable structure, & forced dialogue. European shows often allow scenes to breathe & embrace ambiguity. After that, Hollywood can feel less engaging & I stop watching early. The contrast is hard to ignore once seen.
I feel much the same, however being Dutch I just can’t watch Dutch films. I can dubbed cartoons, even if it feels odd, because they follow the original script. Dutch productions however, however well intended, make me cringe very, very badly because all the dialog is forced. Both in writing and delivery (mostly). Doesn’t help that we have hard Rs and Gs in our language either. Which also explains a reluctance to watch German spoken films.
I don't disagree with you on Hollywood movies, but I do disagree about Scandinavian films (or at least the few I've seen). Which is upsetting because my dad was Swedish but didn't teach us the language, so I was trying immerse myself in Swedish TV, but the few things I managed to find with subtitles I just didn't enjoy at all. I find it all incredibly slow and boring. I'm open to recommendations though and would love to be proven wrong.
I never expected to see Karl Urban phone in... until I saw 'The Bluff'. Like, he tried, but the script was so bad you can see the very moment he just gives up and just goes along with the ride for a paycheck. (Not blaming him)
From his character's perspective, he has very good, true, heartfelt motivations to do good.... So yes, Karl understands his character's motivations.... To do wicked evil things for the better outcome....
