He was later beaten within an inch of his life

this is an excellent microcosm of how big business can steal from you but not the other way around, except dude won the court case

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Thought casinos (in US) can deny electronic winning due to ‘malfunction’?

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

If they can't prove you cheated, you didn't cheat. The US criminal code, ladies and gentlemen...

“I didn’t know that I wasn’t supposed to do that”

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

that’s a whole ‘nother level of luck

A good friend of mine figured out how to manipulate the player point cards with video poker machines. Got banned from a large portion (cont)

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

of U.S. casinos. And the back room beatings are real. He and his adult son got beat by casino staff and then the police one night. He (cont)

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

made a ton of cash and a shit ton of comped trips and prizes before it was figured out. Nothing illegal but it tips the odds a bit your way.

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yeah nah that’s when they take you into a little room and beat the shit out of your hand with a hammer to teach you a lesson.

Or Casino

5 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

That's weird, because most machines have a sticker on it that any malfunction voids play. Maybe that's just in Canada though

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

He was acquitted of the criminal charges for unauthorized access, not for collecting on the voided games.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

a court ruled "video poker machines failed to constitute protected computers and actions failed to constitute exceeding authorized access,"

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Not quite. He was acquitted of the criminal charges, but is not entitled to the money. Any machine malfunction voids the game.

5 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

5 years ago | Likes 92 Dislikes 7

Funny enough we found a similiar bug in novoline machines.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The machines had a "risk" bonus mode when you won something you could risk this money on a double down mode. It was a ladder and each step..

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

..doubled your money by pressing red or black (or loosing everything) up until the top which was a big value. By always pressing black at ..

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

.. every single win, the machine had a higher chance of giving you the top value win and multiple big wins almost sure. So all we did was..

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

pressing spin, if won pressing risk, and smashing black. They patched it at some point when it got public and it did not work anymore.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Just checked it, and it's basically true.

5 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

He didn't get his winnings seized, the guys he brought in to help with it, did get their winnings seized

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Agreed. "Machine malfunction" has been used in the past to refuse legit payouts to winners. Casinos basically have no oversight for that.

5 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 1

This was Vegas. Casinos have very strict oversight when voiding games here.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

As someone who has been in the casino industry for 10 years, you are partly correct. Yes, "Malfunction Voids All Pays and Plays" 1/?

5 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Is printed on every slot, that only applies to payouts that can be withheld in the moment. Like a jackpot that has to be paid to player 2/?

5 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

This doesn't apply to this situation because this guy did this for a while, and he never had to have anyone pay him, the slot did all of 3/?

5 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Work. He wasn't caught doing it until he already had the money. I've also actually spoken to vendors from this specific slot company. 4/?

I build casinos, if you can find video poker machines then play them. They have the highest player advantage out of everything on the floor.

5 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

And are also the most addictive.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Play them? I'm pretty sure your best bet is not to play any game at all in a casino..

5 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

The game labeled ATM pays out 100%

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

They builds casinos. Do you really think they're gonna give you good advice?

5 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

I thought that accolade went to Blackjack?

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Nah, they fuck with it by reshuffling multiple decks after every round and ban you if you count cards (aka bring skill into it)

Just a note that this was only for the acquittal of the criminal charges for unauthorized access. It did not entitle him to the money...

...from the voided games.

The bottom of the Wired article mentions there are no court filings indicating Kane’s winnings were ever seized. Only Nestor’s

5 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Not OP but I’ve heard this story before. https://www.wired.com/2014/10/cheating-video-poker/

Actual decent prose. Reads like Inherent Vice.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That article is written like a novel.

5 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Thank you, Hella too In-depth, but good story

5 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Thanks!

5 years ago | Likes 27 Dislikes 0

So only Kane got away safely. His friend Nestor got shafted horribly.

5 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Casinos in Vegas hate when you do this one simple trick!

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Jeebus I hate all the filler embellishing writing. Someone tell me please if they got away or not, please

5 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

No, they didn't. That's why there's an article about them.

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Ok thanks. I just wanted to see how much of that stupid meme was false.
