I didn't know the Pacific Garbage Patch was on top of a mountain

I think those are flags, that being said Everest is covered in litter, shit and bodies that never decompose due to the alititude

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

You could be using a fisheye lens ?

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Flat-earthers know, they just want to aggravate and it works like a charm.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Not saying the Earth is flat but that is not an accurate representation of the curvature of the earth...

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

The Flat Earth Society has offices all around the globe.

8 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 2

That's just the edge, the end if you would

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Fisheye lens....guaranteed.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Kathmandu : Come for the view. Stay because meat Popsicles can't climb down.

8 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 1

Kathmandu is in a valley :/

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I know the earth is a sphere but that curvature is from the camera lens. Everest isn't high enough to see the curvature of the earth.

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Highest point on Earth, well time to dump my trash

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

Fish eye lens. You have to go higher to see the actual curvature.

8 years ago | Likes 46 Dislikes 0

but thats high enough to see your moms curvature

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 3

That's not a fisheye lens. Wide angle yes, but not fisheye.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

People still believe the lies of NASA? LOOOoool

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

When will people learn you aren't supposed to see a curve? A curve like that would imply Earth is a cylinder.

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Oh please you are just using a fisheye lens!!!

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

If the earth were the size of a pool ball (61.5 mm), Everest would be the size of a grain of salt. (.04 mm) at that height you couldn't

8 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 2

i've read that if the earth was scaled down to the size of a bowling ball that it would be smoother than a bowling ball

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

really see the curvature of the earth at this extent. For that you have to go up a bit higher, this is most likely taken with a gopro style

Lens distortion

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Obviously Earth isn't flat, but the curvature shown here is largely the product of a very short focal length (wide-angle or fisheye) lens.

8 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

You can have extremely short focal lengths and not be a fisheye. "Fisheye" refers specifically only to the geometric mapping of the image.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Technically correct--which *is* the best kind of correct--but for the most part such distortion is typical of short-focal-length lenses.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

EG: the Nikon 13mm/5.6 - a $50,000 lens with a 120 degree, totally linear, undistorted field of view

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Fish eye lens. Liar.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Fish-eye lenses always make flat lines curved.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

At the temp and pressure at this altitude, a wide angled lens will always display a distorted horizon. It’s actually flat.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

'Shopped.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

that's a fisheye lens. That's the first thing they will moan and bitch over when they see this picture.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah, fish eye lens. I've seen pictures from orbit with less visible curvature. Also, look at the top right corner.

Did one of the elephants catch you?

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 3

I'm not sure why you were downvoted for not knowing something. It was a Discworld reference.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

I've been all over the world. Seen it from some pretty incredible perspectives. Doesn't matter. Some people will never believe.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

That’s a space peanut.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It's not the shape of the horizon that demonstrates the earth's curvature, just its existence. A flat earth would have no horizon.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Still not flat

8 years ago | Likes 65 Dislikes 12

Of course it isn't flat. Just wanted to mention that this photo is weird.

8 years ago | Likes 47 Dislikes 0

Just had to be sure

8 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

If you correct the light ray to be straight, wouldn't that curve the horizon more?

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 3

You can't see the curvature, even from an airplane. You'd need to go to space which is impossible for most people. Arguing with FErs using >

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

wrong facts is the worse one can do. Learn before talking about science, or you'll add to the ignorance. Which this silly caption does.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

light flaring in the lens?

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 3

And it's warped because it's a fish eye lens

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Hmmm he has a fisheye lens. All things are curvy then. Even his mom.????

8 years ago | Likes 599 Dislikes 13

Probably a wide angle. Fish eye would be way more curved out all the way around.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

fisheye curves it inwards:

8 years ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 9

I think if the horizon is above the center line (as in OP's picture), it would curve the other way, "downwards".

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Only if the horizon is in the lower half of the shot, if it is in the upper half it curves the other way.

8 years ago | Likes 39 Dislikes 0

good point

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

It's most likely an ultra wide angle lens with the Everest photo.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

There are rectilinear UWA lenses, this has to be a fisheye. Gopro because of weight, I guess?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Unless his phone gas a fish I lens, I think its legit. U can see taking the picture with his phone in the reflection of his goggles

8 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 17

You can see the phone with those pixels?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

What is the deal with fish eye lenses? Why do you want that?

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

A fisheye lens doesn't have a rectilinear mapping (that's the relationship between points in the image with those in the real world). 1/2

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The wider the field of view of a lens, the higher its optical power, and the more expensive it is to construct. A fisheye lens allows 2/3

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

cheaper construction for the same field of view. Their original purpose was astronomy and meteorology - imaging the entire sky, the 3/4

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

whole horizon, 360 degrees, in one 35mm frame. Photographers liked the effect, and they entered the commercial market 50 years later. 4/4

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

If you want a comparable field of view to a fisheye on a full-frame camera, your only option is $60,000:

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

(This is the widest rectilinear / non-fisheye lens ever made for Nikon - they show up on eBay about once a year for the price of a new BMW)

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You can fit more in a single image with a fisheye or wide angle lens.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

Yeah but you only get more garbage on a pic and it still doesn't look like it really looks.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 5

Photography is about subject and context. The relative size of subject and context changes with distance and field of view. If you're 1/2

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

filling the frame with garbage, then you are not balancing subject and context appropriately. 2/2

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

True, but it is not a real reprensation. I always dislike when people use fisheye, especially on mountains. Everything looks so steep.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Do photos need to look real though? I think they look quite cool. Sick skate tricks on youtube wouldn't be as great without the fisheye.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

No, they don't have to. I'm just saying I dislike it. If you want to show cool moves, by all means, if you want to show reality, don't.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Well, it's sort of a tourist attraction and we all know what tourists do to places.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I think the families of the corpses in these pictures would prefer you used a term other than 'rubbish'.

8 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 14

What corpses?

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Bodies aren't really any different than any other organic waste.

8 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 2

That's one point of view on the subject.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

And today's winner for "Quotes that you Hear from a Serial Killer" is...

Great Everest garbage patch. All the years of planes dumping their trash in the air. Wind currents drag it all here. Sad really.

8 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 28

Why is this being downvoted?

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

There's garbage and corpses all over Everest. You can't get that shit down

8 years ago | Likes 59 Dislikes 1

Literal shit, too. That stuff freezes and doesn't decompose.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I've thought of a somewhat fucked up way to retrieve a corpse on Mount Everest.

8 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

here's mine. baloons, bodybags with a solid buckle at one end. GPS blackbox inside the bag, and a two man craddle with hydrogen/helium.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

collect the corpse, bag it, attach it to an uninflated baloon, inflate down to 5kg or less, let the baloon go in the winds that drift away.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Take an air pump and a single person inflatable raft. Tie the corpse to the inflated raft and give it a good push. "See you at the bottom!"

8 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 0

*Raft goes 3 feet, hits jagged rocks, deflates and slides into a crevasse.

8 years ago | Likes 30 Dislikes 0

Out of sight, out of mind.

8 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

This would not work at all but it's a pretty funny thought so +1

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Zorbs would be better!!

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's not, that's why this hit front page.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Regardless of what anyone calls them, they're scraps of paper and cloth. Garbage. Count on humans to fuck up any environment they visit.

8 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 3

What organisms exactly are being fucked up in this scenario? Are all those Mt. Everest seagulls eating the flags and hurting their tummies?

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 2

Isn't clothing biodegradable?

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Not at that altitude. Like a lot of things on the mountain they're basically frozen in time. Especially with no moisture.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Those are prayer flags

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 3

You'd think that at least on top of Mt Everest there's no fucking garbage, but nooo....

8 years ago | Likes 62 Dislikes 11

I mean... maybe let's chill with calling the prayer flags of another culture garbage?

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 6

There’s bodies. Many many

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Dude, we have garbage on the moon. Of course we've trashed every inch of Earth.

8 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

Moon garbage is special though.

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Didn't they leave poopoo on the moon?

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I certainly hope so.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Its rotten with garbage and corpses of those that never finished the climb.

8 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 0

Well that's the problem. Things are not rotting

8 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

The mountain is littered with corpses, & the air tanks they needed to get them there. It's pretty awful, really.

8 years ago | Likes 47 Dislikes 0

Not to mention the poo!

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

poocicles

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

yeah someone needs to go pick up the litter

Send robots.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

There is occasionally an effort to do so, but it's incredibly dangerous.

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

This is pretty common actually.
