I never understood the fascination with dipping children in bodies of water and suddenly claiming they have powers. Then again, I think religion is just silly and that there is no sky daddy.
RTK4740
Sky Daddy is not going to like your saying that.
TheIronPenguin
Think of it like this; If you dip a chicken nugget in a sauce, it gains more flavour. So why wouldn't a baby gain something by being dipped in a liquid?. The logic checks out, but maybe we're just dipping the children in the wrong liquids.
Makerofthingsmasherofstuff
Hmmm... Go on. I'm suddenly curious about KFC opportunities.
stayingalive4life
So what I’m hearing is, we should be dipping kids in BBQ sauce?
DataDewDrop
I don’t think Catholics claim that baptizing babies gives them powers, I think it’s just a thing they do.
Makerofthingsmasherofstuff
"incorporates us into the people of God and makes us his adopted children, a baptized child has no sins."
Sounds like a "we are better than you" power trip sort of thing to me.
DataDewDrop
If any given culture thought their belief system wasn’t morally superior to every other belief system, they wouldn’t hold onto that belief system. Most people want to believe that they’re at least trying to be good people, even if they’re delusional or fail at it most of the time.

Baptizing is a symbolic washing away of previous sin, including the original sin.
RTK4740
Yes, we've got to get rid of the original sin God put inside us because he loved us enough to put it inside us but now we are dirty sinners and hateful.
c0i9z
I'm not saying it's not kind of silly, just saying they it's not completely arbitrary.
