Sort of. But still more efficient than hand washing

It wastes less later to run dirty dishes through a dishwasher than to wash that same load by hand #themoreyouknow
tenaka30
I'm sure it's true, but my gut feeling is that doesn't sound right. The amount of water in the video alone seems too much doing too little.
Pronak
Depends on how you wash your stuff. I rinse, wash, let the soap work and rinse again. Use a clean sponge with no sponge in the second wash.1
I think I waste one gallon of water in a complete sink filled with plates, glasses and utensils.

If you don't waste water by cleaning them of beforehand, then: Yes, modern DW properly loaded use less water & energy.
Lounatik
Yes. New dishwashers, 1.5 to 6 gallons per wash. Handwash up to 27 gallons per wash. At least that's what the intertubes told me.
myshitisbananas
It depends on how many dishes you have. If the dishwasher is full then yes

NoImDirtyDan
DW repairman said the detergent needs food particles to attach to. If there’s not enough dirt, the soap isn’t as effective. DW also 1/2
Yes, because it is already clean. Are you worried about the dishwasher's feelings?
2/2 only use about 4-5 gallons of water. Washing the same amount by hand could use twice as much water
ambersandz
Mine told me the same when I complained of residue. The detergent needs particles to cling to.
Cheomesh
Just finish the job without the washer, then? Would save water and power.
Not cleaning thoroughly is how we got a global pandemic.
truthsmiles
I don't use a dishwasher but I'm not convinced my method actually saves any water or power. I leave the faucet on too much.
whatsisname
It doesn't. Dishwashers typically use 1/3rd to 1/6th the amount of water as handwashing.
Makes sense. In my case it's probably 1/10th haha. The problem is that I end up "pre-washing" anyway bc no dishwasher actually cleans well.
My dishwasher uses 3 gallons per cycle. Super duper efficient.
