Since it's not a sentient entity, no speech about it or directed toward it is able to be classified as hate speech. Right?

I threw my own music at Suno just to see what it could do. It's... Okay... Though I wish it would obey instructions better...

PISS also works because the AI images keep getting darker and darker shades of yellow. Presumably this means they are running low on water.

Love it, this needs a petition site

Every single one of my hobbies has been ruined because of "ai"... I really dislike the future.

PISS it is.

I like Fake Smart myself. Saw that term here this week.

When "Lines of code" = "output" then yes... AI can help your workforce 10x their "output"... Good luck maintaining your 10x AI slop codebases

It will just delete it. So there goes your entire production database... and you idiots also gave it permission to access the backups so they are gone too... enjoy chapter 11

They don't ALL run on plagiarized data though. The ones being used in medical research are typically fed open source medical data and custom made informational packets. They also tend to have much much much stricter use cases and can't really be used outside of the very specific study they are being used in. But when used to these very specific purposes they do produce some good results. They are making big jumps in early cancer detection for example.

Those generally aren't your standard LLM models either. They're closer to the old neural networks \ machine learning. They also rarely include the Large Language Models - ie they don't talk to you
I think that most people who hate AI really hate the LLMs that talk, shoved into everything and everywhere cause they're desperate to find a niche for it since they've invested billions.
The pattern recognition and generation applied to narrowed sets of research data is great. Talking ones bad
tehdotcommunist
A lot of those are fine-tuned versions of off-the-shelf models, not trained from scratch.

There just SO MUCH BATHWATER!

It's not like we need more babies tbh.

well yeah you have to throw the bathwater out. the baby pissed in it.

Not with the baby still in it though…

Well, it seems like you just want to keep throwing out bathwater...

You might as well not bother, this place is in full AI hysteria mode. Anything related to AI has become the stand-in for everything anyone here hates, especially related to capitalism, so any kind of rational discourse, or discussion of the actual technology vs the bubble, is immediately screamed down. Factual information gets downvoted. Basically Imgur treats AI tech like the right treats illegal immigrants, as a boogeyman that can't possibly ever work AND an existential threat to humanity.
TheMuellmann
I don't disagree for the most part, just want to add a but of nuance: As far as I can tell, the fucked up part of AI that people are rightfully pissed about doesn't represent AI in its entirety, but it is a necessary evil, because corporations won't finance the research for useful technology without being allowed to use it as a money making machine. So the question is: Is the good worth the bad?
IDontKnowWhatToDoAnymoreAndImTired
Is technology which can revolutionize science, medicine, industry, and start to eliminate the back breaking cost of physical human labor, worth putting up with some pointless gimmick uses of the technology? Yes.
TheMuellmann
Is it worth destroying resources and multiplying energy consumption at a where our way of living is already unsustainable? Yes, there are a lot of good uses for AI in it's different forms, but to really reap the benefits we need to keep our current level of civilatory infrastructure on the highest levels - which is threatened by none other than the commercial exploitation of AI (among other things, to be fair).
IDontKnowWhatToDoAnymoreAndImTired
We're neither "destroying resources" nor "multiplying energy consumption." That's nonsense. Data centers in general and AI in particular represent a TINY fraction of overall resource use, and even major growth leaves it small. But people can sell you on the idea that it's a huge impact, especially lying through statistics, and they have. You don't realize you're being propagandized for profit.
IDontKnowWhatToDoAnymoreAndImTired
Imgur has gone from the place where people got downvoted if they didn't include a reputable source, to the place where people uncritically soak up propaganda and lies as long as it tells them it's okay to hate the things they want to hate.

The problem with AI, at least how i see it, isn't AI. Its that its being developed and owned by capitalists. AI has an actual problem, the power it needs and pollution it causes. That problem doesn't get solved, because those that own AI aren't paying the price for it, due to capitalism.
If AI was owned by us all, and everyone profited equally from it, my guess is that people would be way less against it. AI could be a force for good, if it wasn't in the hands of capitalists.
IDontKnowWhatToDoAnymoreAndImTired
First off, let's be clear: the power, water, and pollution issues are nowhere near what they've been sold as. The projected "massive" increase in data center cooling water puts it, by 2028, at less than one third of the water used for residential swimming pools.
https://www.cbsnews.com/projects/2026/how-much-water-ai-uses/
Even if you include all water POSSIBLY used to generate electricity--and there's no reason not to use wind or solar--it's still tiny compared to overall US use.
IDontKnowWhatToDoAnymoreAndImTired
Second, your entire issue has nothing at all to do with AI or technology. It's about people. You don't like the technology because you associate it with people you don't like. Pretty much every new technology has been like that, but it didn't change the impact on the world of electricity or the computer, both of which fundamentally altered how people live and work.
Volirus
Im happy its not as bad as its supposedly made out to be. I still think THAT is the real "problem" though, and not like you said, all the conflated things that are really capitalism issues. To be clear, i am pro AI, not against. Any saving on water or pollution is good, if we're planning on scaling up AI. Which I don't see how we could not plan on doing that. I can see lots of applications for AI, so the more efficient it is in power and water, the better.
rubypilgrim
well, the power and pollution problems would remain. But essentially, yes. A big problem is that companies are using AI to cut entry level jobs, not realizing they're eliminating the experts they'll need in 10 years because those experts became experts in those entry level jobs. Those experts are the ones who can check and correct AI output. Oops.
Volirus
My idea/hope is that when AI is collectively owned, we will fund and prioritize research into making AI more efficient in power and less polluting. I doubt there is much incentive for capitalists atm to research AI in that direction, but when AI is collectively owned, it would be much easier to steer it towards being more green.
