Note how they are going diagonally towards the waves, its to minimize or compromise between the roll and the leverage in the hull. On very big ships, like >250k ton, you can actually see the deck and hull curve and bend over the waves, as they have zones designed for it.
Comparatively tiny offers certain advantages here. An enormous amount of the stress on modern tankers/freighters comes from being so long they span wave crests, leaving no water under big parts of the hull.
In the 40's, my dad was on a sea-going tug off the west coast of Mexico. The boat was rolling 45 degrees. One guy cooked lunch and two people ate. The other 50 or so weren't hungry for some reason.
