I don't understand why you even NEED to be a "legal US citizen" to vote. Politicians act on behalf of the people LIVING in their district, or for the president, living anywhere in the USA. The entire point of voting is for the "constituents" (people the official acts on behalf of) to be chosen BY those same people. The laws they pass and the decisions they make don't just affect the people that can "prove" they're eligible to vote, they affect everyone.
I just paid extra at an airport cause I somehow missed what a REAL ID was. I showed my drivers license and they said I needed my real ID and it just got more confusing from there. “This is my real ID, that’s me”
Just annoying cause nothing changes except you get a little colored line on your drivers license
Counterpoint: every American not having a passport is insane. Not having ID to vote is insane. Not having ID is insane. Not phasing this in over 5-10 years is insane. We're a first world country and need to act like one. The assumption that we're all adults has been proven wrong. Nevermind Trump - he's just doing this so it looks like he didn't cause Jan 6. Having ID is a real benefit to all: jobs, banks, loans, voting, benefits, etc. time to grow up people.
Ignoring that there are plenty of things that count as ID but won't be good enough under the proposed rules (such as the things posted in the picture you didn't read), are you offering to pay for everyone who can't afford to go get a passport or Real ID, including spending time working through all the secondary bureaucracy for those who don't have all the necessary documents to get one?
This old story of excuses. Living costs money. Your responsibility from birth until death is to be a citizen. Citizenship has requirements. There are two arguments here that get conflated: having a passport and paying for it which disenfranchises people. This is the Democrat argument. So get into power and make it a law that everyone needs a passport to vote and it is paid for by the government. Instead, the Democrats only argument is to not do it at all. Dumb. Dumb. Dumb.
In 1790, only white male adult property-owners had the right to vote. I think that's what they're trying to slowly get back to! https://www.inf">g-rights">https://www.infoplease.com/history/us/us-voting-rights /m8zkQdB

Forget everything else, the insanity is that it's solving a problem that doesn't exist. The Heritage Foundation (of project 2025 fame) run an ongoing study on election fraud. Even they show that there's only been roughly 2k cases of confirmed fraud over 30.uears of tracking. Which amounts to a ridiculously really really really small percentage of total votes. Functionally equal to having no effect on any election whatsoever.
And after 99% of their (MAGA) voters were rejected at the polls, because they don't own a passport (or a birth certificate mismatch), they cry foul and election fraud.
They're going to scream voter fraud one way or another. Cast doubt on the whole election system all day every day, all while the Heritage Foundation works on their plans to steal elections.
Yes -- because I had to go back to the county where I had lived when I was born. *Fortunately*, I still live in the same state -- so it was a bit easier for me. My SO lives a couple of states away from where she was born, and she's not looking forward to *having* to travel all the way back there just for that.
Ah yes, the birth certificate duplicated on an old mimeograph when I was born? And when I went and got a replacement35 years later, it was printed on a laser printer at an angle?
I still have my original birth certificate, raised seal and everything. And absolutely no one accepts it because it looks like an old microfiche printout.
I live in one of those fun states where I can get a passport but not a real ID even with my passport unless I get married. On the flip side my SO was able to get his without showing them anything while renewing his license. Yay Merica!

Birth certificate, bill of some kind and if I wanted to go overboard a signed document from the owner of where I lived to get a real ID. Laughable really to get the real ID
I remember when I got my real id. I forgot to bring a bill with my address but had a peice of mail from a federal agency that I have to be a part of for my job. They told me that wasn't good enough and that it needed to be a bill. As if a federal agency is easier to fake than signing up for a service at an address that I don't live at. It is such a joke. I blew up at the poor dmv lady and then apologized once I calmed down since its not her fault.
US citizens need birth certificate, unexpired US passport, or naturalization docs + two proofs of residency (stuff that shows where you live and that you live there, like lease/mortgage/paystubs/bank documents). If the state skipped the residency proof they did it wrong, which is part of why every state has to re-verify your docs if you move.
I like how somebody went down this chain and downvoted random bits from me and mohavewolfpup for no readily apparent reason. This one, which is nothing but basic facts on how to get a REAL ID, is especially funny.
No, they didn't skip anything. No way in hell I ever would either. Good news is though those ones are only available in person at the DC passport office so if for some reason (you probably dont but if you did) need a new passport, going through the normal process or online process gets you a regular normal passport. At least thats what I read.
https://factually.co/fact-checks/politics/save-act-required-forms-of-id-241cff I get the save act is crap, but lets not lie about what it says. Read the bill, REAL ID is acceptable if the state that issued it fully followed the act and not just the portions needed for flying. Its been branded as Enhanced ID and is part of the REAL ID Act. It shouldn't take EID to prove citizenship. The law directs states to establish processes for accepting supplemental documents to link birth certs to REAL ID
I did not deliberately provide incomplete information, I even provided the link to all the correct information, the real id act itself. Anyone who is just using news headlines and social media posts as their argument sources are the issue. read the full act as I posted it.
I did not say every state. I am pointing out that people are using misinformation. The states are calling 'full compliance' with the act 'enhanced id' because the act left it up to the states to comply, and most decided not to.
When a small minority are the only ones that use them, it's not misinformation. You claiming that they are liars because they didn't mention enhanced IDs while deliberately omitting the fact that only a small portion of states use them *is* spreading misinformation.
They specifically said that enhanced id wasn't real id and that real id couldn't be used for what was said and wasn't designed to be used for it, which it was. The states had the choice how to comply. That is the misinformation.
It says real ID couldn't be used for it, which is true. It doesn't say enhanced ID isn't real ID. It doesn't make a fucking difference that some states use enhanced ID when literally 90% don't.
Enhanced ID/DL is specifically for crossing into Canada without the need for a passport, which is why only a tiny handful of states offer them--the ones that have a ton of Canadian tourist travel. REAL ID is a direct result of 9/11 and standardized requirements for obtaining ID/DL across all states, requiring that states verify identity docs before issuing one, and also check other states' databases to ensure they don't have suspensions or offenses or the like that mean they shouldn't have one.

(re: EID, also mexico and the carribbean, but no southern states offer enhanced ID so I have doubts about how many people are bothering to use them to head that way)
Because those states did not want to go to the expense of doing the full real id certifications. Its been left to the states to figure out how to comply and if they even wanted to. I was shocked to learn that depending on the state, people's voting record information is accessible to law enforcement, government officials, businesses and even members of the general public (among others). Great democracy you have there.
Yup, and felons can't vote which a ton of Americans can't seem to wrap their head around why that is some really fucked up voter suppression too. The U.S is insane and doesn't know how to do honest democracy - and the state sticks it's fingers into what should be the entirely private affair of choosing party candidates.
No. That is just silly wishful thinking. Political parties will exist no matter you call them or try to legislate - don't even try. They shouldn't have any particular place in the system, that's no concern of the government, except as any incidental law handles corporations and associations.
The whole system needs restructuring, there's not one single thing that'd magically fix things. Something that doesn't get talked about enough, IMO, is the time between elections and then taking power, especially as some of the wankers want to go scorched earth as they're leaving. The problem is that the UK is a LOT smaller than the US. Our population is huge and spread out geographically, including multiple time zones. It takes much longer to vote, count votes and then certify that they are legitimate. I do agree that once a candidate is certified as the winner that they should be sworn in immediately though.
