Me in 2008 after losing 250lbs. in 17 months. I was 31 at the time.
Me in 2012 after getting my second body-lift surgery. Yes, they had to move my nipples.
Not sexy - but this is the dirty reality of weight loss. It's still more than worth it, but skin and fat cells don't really disappear.
Trying to edit. Editing posts is really shitty btw. Anyway, I didn't intend this to become a weight loss post, but I will be a bit morbid and say that weight loss can be incredibly painful and there is a cost.
This is my experience. It may be worse than most. At the end was it worth it? Yes, hell yes, it is worth going on this journey, but you should beware that it can be exceeeeeeedingly painful at times. So take care of yourself, and be more poactive than I was.
This is pretty random because this edit window is super tiny.
#1 - I was always heavy from the time I was a little boy and suffered greatly because of it. I was always self-concious, and took all that pain and turned it inward, making myself incredibly suicidal.
#2 - I was unemployed after the dot.com bubble burst and the 2001 crash. For 3 years. Being unemployed destroyed my sense of being man - basically emotionally emasculated me. On top of that I was 400lbs. already (I was 25).
#3 - My boss in 2007 told me that I was a really good program manager (I work for a major software company) but that I wouldn't get anywhere because it looked like I couldn't manage myself. She trusted that I would take that feedback in (she was nice about it). She saved my life. Lourdes, wherever you are, I will cherish our time together til the end of my life.
#4 - People will try to stop you. People will try to make it a competition. This drove me away from people, it was my own struggle, it wasn't a race. You don't do it for Imgur points (oh the irony!) One of the worst things I've heard is, "You could have won Biggest Loser!" It's not about that, it's not about exposing yourself.
#5 - It pisses me off when people post pictures where they look like sculpted models. Stop. I lift 4 times a week, I can run a half marathon, I can do 100 mile bike races at 20mph most of the way. I am 5 foot 7, I look like a rugby player, I have skin all over and fat cells that will never leave. This is as good as it's going to get.
#6 - Advice: Go get a nutritional education and go get a therapist and go get a psych eval. The demons that I dealt with in the aftermath essentially gave me clinical PTSD. I don't mention this because people throw this around. But I've been diagnosed by 3 different professionals and take litium, lamotrigine, duloxetine and enlyte to deal with that and my bipolar 2 (thanks mom and dad!) not to mention the 3 blood pressure medicines I'm on because that never went away.
#7 - I have borderline hypothyroidism and go on and off medication. This is no excuse, it is controllable, so whenever someone tells me they have medical reasons why they can't lose weight I raise my eyebrows.
#8 - I no longer talk to my parents and have dissolved almost all of my social circle from before the weight loss... part of losing the weight is re-evaluating why you gained it. I ate to kill myself. Slowly, but that was the reason.
#9 - There was a time where I hated fat people during my weight loss. It was a phase, and I had to confront it. I don't talk about this subject usually unless someone wants to know. Usually I preface it with, "it's not sexy" or "do you really, really want to know?" Because it's about an examination of self, not a diet.
I'm about 210 lbs. now. My lowest was 181. I am 40 though and enjoy beer. But it's better than the 430ish lbs. I was in my late 20s.
I didn't have weight loss surgery. I don't have any thoughts on it other than to say that the only successful cases I've seen is when people lose a large percentage of weight (say 25% - 50%) before doing it. It's too hard to change your lifestyle when doing that surgery (IMO).
I applaud all of the people who have various means of getting the results.
I went from 435 - 300 by cutting my calories to 2,500 a day. I ate the same meal every single day. And I mean, every, single, day.
If you limit your calories, you can eat whatever you want. 2 days into your non-stop cheeto and donut bender you will realize that you feel like shit and you will naturally adjust your diet budget.
Just as long as you keep it under your caloric limit.
It's been 9 years, I'm just now starting to become comfortable with the idea that I cannot be 170 lbs., and that I have skin and cells that will never go away.
But I think about it pretty much 10 times a day, every time I look in the mirror. I also picture myself as fatter than people tell me I am, I suppose this is somewhat similar to what anorexic women see or feel like.
And yes, I got to see the pictures of my nipples sitting on a table and it was totally bloody and gross but AWESOME.
I can't add additional pictures so I'll add more when I can and post in a separate post.
Sorry for the long edit.
QtheM
Empty fat cells do tend to die after a decade or so. So there's that. Just keep them empty long enough . . .

I don't know how to edit posts so I'll just comment. There's fat on my tummy that won't leave w/o lipo (cells shrink, they don't disappear).
Gonnaderpya
Before you got it removed did you ever stand in front of a strong fan and pretend to be a flying squirrel? Cause that's what I'd do
MyUserNameWasTakenBySomeSonofaB1tch
I think many people don't realize that the skin doesn't just snap back
MasterPrime
This is why you don't go crazy with weight loss. You have to give the skin time to adjust
reux
Kinda, but there are a ton of factors including how long you've been heavy, age, genetics, etc.
SaintPoop
wow, good job losing that much weight op
EpicPancakes
How
myteenyverse
The frankness of this post is why I liked it.
myteenyverse
Hey.. you.. Imgur recommended this post again. Dunno why
Punderstandable
Aw, for a minute there you were VERY skinny.
Yetums
How painful is the lift? Crazy, GL op
Mosrael
Wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. Percocet 10's as prescribed saw me through. About three weeks of walking hunched over from the tuck
MathiasTolerain
Nobody else is going to comment on how illegal what OP's boss did was? OP, if you got that on record, you'd never have to work again.
reux
You haven't lived until you've woken up with your morning wood poking into your skin flaps, and trying to come untangled.
Flapjackal
Currently eating a bacon and egg-mayo sandwich. I stopped chewing for a moment.
IridescentLotus
Does insurance cover this?
ameowica
My roommate had this surgery and they put his nipples back in the wrong places. Congrats on the well placed nips @OP!
reux
:( that sucks!
ameowica
Eh he's got a bangin' and awesome girlfriend so I don't think he's too upset about it
LADYandSIR
I'm also down to 210 (from 380) and all the lose skin is a little demoralizing.

I hate the after picture, but you can see the leftover skin on my chin (rhyme).
Nethyl
Holy heck, that's amazing. Nice work.
reux
For comparison, I wear size 33-34/30 jeans (depends on brand). My waist is 32 but there's so much skin left on my legs I have to go bigger.
luposlipaphobia
Feel free to not answer :)... how do you and up weighing so much? During the time you were obese, did you ever think you'd lose it again? 1/
luposlipaphobia
When did you decide it was time to change? What would you say/recommend to people that are still obese if you could tell them anything?
reux
I tried to edit my post but it's somewhere. I hate the edit system... anyway...
reux
I ate to kill myself. Slow suicide. and I'll add the rest to the edited post
GeneralBuzzkil
Jesus man, thats a lot of sag. Not for not though, I hope Im like that soon, as Im trying to loose weight. Any suggestions on how to?
GifAsInGiraffe
Fasting diet, also called the 5:2 diet
reux
Diet and excersize :( It's not a sexy answer but it is...
GeneralBuzzkil
Anything different from the normal suggestions? And its not gonna be sexy, however, your improving yourself, which is good.
reux
I ate a lot of Grape Nuts, Chicken sandwiches and coffee. Coffee (black) is a godsend. I eventually added stuff back in.
TheRickestRickFromEarthDimensionC137
Thank you for showing us the ugly truth. It's hard, and it sucks, but I'm proud of you for what you can do and for 1/2
TheRickestRickFromEarthDimensionC137
Taking care of yourself, without putting vanity on the line. You're doing good things. Ever wanna chat, hit me up.

Why are the numbers blue? They don't link to anything on mobile.
Slagurth
I'm 28 and 390lbs (down from 420), is there anything I can do as I lose weight to keep my skin from loosening too much?
MrRauchPotato
Holy crap that I what my knee looked like and damn that was weird
kumochan
When I had a breast reduction, I told my dad I wasn't allowed to swim because they took my nipples off. That's an awkward drugged up moment.
lifeisapicnic
Damn dude. I lost 100lbs a couple years ago and I have to respect that number 250. It's hard, good work
GamingOnANewLvl
@op you mentioned eating the same meal every day what did you eat and was it redneck certified?
reux
It was unfortunately squirrel free. But it did contain meat. I'm actually more of a foodie now than before and enjoy animal flesh raw.
GamingOnANewLvl
Well that answers the latter of the questions, and the previous would be?
reux
Oh.. Grape Nuts for breakfast, small sandwich/soup for lunch and chicken for dinner.
reux
My basic goal was through coffee and grape nuts to force a satisfying poop every day (I'm sorta serious)
GamingOnANewLvl
That actually doesn't sound nasty which is surprising considering most weight loss meals I've seen are the definition of it, to me at least
reux
I'll post some pictures later of what I look like today. Not for vanity, but to show people the aftermath of these surgeries.

The entire surgery was $37,000. The top surgery was more. They had to insert drainage tubes into my crotch.
reux
Pulling them out wasn't fun.
Theumbraetant
So you didn't do it through exercise and such?
reux
Yeah. But the skin doesn't go away. I didn't get weight loss surgery tho
reux

WellWellWellLookWhoItIs
And you're gonna waste it because you like beer? Dude, you're back up 30 pounds.
reux
Technically, when I was 181 I was running 6 times a day and eating nothing. I was obsessed
reux
After 3 years of that my legs were shot.
reux
Some things aren't worth giving up.
WellWellWellLookWhoItIs
Some things are, like $37k apparently. No magic cap on that weight; keep drinking the beer at the same rate, it will all come back. (1/)
WellWellWellLookWhoItIs
My ex mother-in-law was in the 400s when she got the surgery. After and with lifestyle changes got down to 200s. But too many slips (2/)
WellWellWellLookWhoItIs
with old favorites and stopping exercising and after 1 1/2 years she'd gained all the weight back. All of it. (3/)

You going to make a leather jacket out of the extra skin they took off?
