I thought taxes in Germany were pretty straightforward? Or so my wife tells me, but maybe that's just compared to how complicated it is in the US?

They can be if you are only salary employed. If you are self employed or things like this it can become a more tedious

Get the Wiso Tax computer application to do taxes, it helps a lot! It has an interview mode that guides you through all the stuff and you can sent it straight from the app after that. Can highly recommend!

Actually taxes here in Germany are rather easy. You can also use some tax apps, but remember that they want their share. Maybe German imgur can help you somehow?

Wait! Here in Romania, the employer pays the employee and the taxes to the state. Hence the difference between gross and net salary.

The tax apps are super helpful. I've used SteurGo and my wife has used WisoSteur to do our more complicated taxes. The taxes are usually quite simple, but those should really help, especially the latter, if you have more complicated situations for self employment, etc. You have to pay for both, but definitely worth it!
