Regulate AI is not like the others at all. Sure, reject any and all AI reproductions of actor likenesses 100%. But that's just a contract provision, it has nothing to do with regulating it everywhere. Keep the 80 year old tech illiterate congress as far away from the hottest most innovative sector in tech

The key part for me is to treat the use of AI as a functional reproduction of the entire training set of data for copyright purposes. If you train an AI on copyrighted material, you need to pay royalties to the copyright holder when that AI's output is used, same as artists who sample other people's songs. The second part of that is that artists should own copyright for use in AI training by default, not studios, unless their contract explicitly stated that AI use was the intended purpose.

Ai when properly utilized is supposed to help take the tedium out of various jobs, while still providing full compensation to employees. Without regulations its going to continue down this route and be heavily abused. I wrote one of my term papers around this subject and it's outlook can be harrowing if it's not caught early. 1/2

It can either provide incredible benefits, or disturbing drastic shifts in global employment sectors like we saw when agriculture machinery took off during the industrial revolution. A lot needs to be done to make it work well but the benefits are incredible if properly regulated. 2/2

Yes. AI is just another form of automation. It can massively increase productivity, but unless we shift our economic paradigm, the capitalist class and its enablers will just use it to eliminate jobs and increase the pool of desperate workers with few marketable skills who'll accept exploitation in exchange for a slightly-less-awful situation. This has happened in A LOT of fields before, and it's rather damning how many people only became concerned with it when they felt personally threatened.

TLDR it will allow the studios to say "well see how little money or how volatile revenue is. We couldn't possibly pay you more". So as long as studios are making money it allows the unions to make a case for a larger piece of the pie vs getting crumbs.

Writers were not there when every other company was developing new technology to cut jobs. As a former railroad worker I watched a huge chunk of jobs lost thanks to technology. End of train devices cut off 1 job per every train by eliminating the need for a caboose. RCO engines/automated switches cut yard jobs from 3 people down to 1. Do you think the writers gave a shit out that though? I bet every working class person has seen Micromanagement and technology result in job losses firsthand.

It's not the rich actors that this will hurt. They're unlikely to use AI for a lead performance, it'd be too difficult and too obvious. It's the extras, the background actors etc. who'd be replaced with AI. They're not rich.

But that is exactly my point. The issue isn't that his likeness was used without consent, it is that he got no residuals etc., and so his pay was puny despite appearing in 200 episodes. Also, his likeness was used in a very limited way, for a few seasons, for a single supporting role. Maybe they would have run away with it if they weren't limited to 90s tech, but I don't think this is the same as what we are talking about now.

If they were doing this in the 90s like this where the actor was paid a pittance compared to the amount of value his likeness brought to the show then it will only get worse when studios can use an actor's likeness and generate their voice performance using AI without even needing the actor.

On the one hand, yes. But on the other, they've been doing it to dead actors and have also recently set up a deal with James Earl Jones to have him be Vader long after he dies, too. It's not nothing but I would argue a red herring. All of those deals were above board right, so what? The union isn't picketing against James Earl Jones for signing a deal. The dead actor's estates are involved and if not somebody is getting sued into oblivion (subject to trademark laws, not at issue here). I want to stay focused on the issues actually being negotiated instead of what is being used to generate outrage for clout.
