Depending on the age of the kittens, they are often euthanized at the shelter. Kittens are very fragile and require a lot of resources that shelters often don't have. I believe kittens under 8 weeks make up most of the euthanasias in shelters. I may be misremembering that, data is from the Kitten Lady's book.
