Why hasn’t it been nunya this entire time. Some of these fucking loons only view the world with where they put their genitalia.

4 years ago | Likes 52 Dislikes 5

Why does it even matter? Actor or any job, it should be irrelevant who they are intimate with.

4 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

Also also also, from a guy who's been doing theatre for over a decade, it's called ACTING for a reason. I get the desire for diverse casting

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

and I think that's great, but no, straight characters don't need to be portrayed by straight actors any more than gay characters need to be

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

portrayed by gay actors, or cis by cis, trans by trans, etc. Cast the best actor. Most of the time there will be someone from the portrayed

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

community who is the best or equally the best as someone not from the community, but if not, don't hinder a role by compelling casting.

If their plumbing isn't coming into contact with yours, it isn't really any of your fucking business what kinds of plumbing they like.

cavetown (robbie) is a musician who was forced to come out as transgender to stop an angry mob of tumblrites. sad shit, man.

The whole point of acting is to be someone you are not, typecasting people for everything down to religion, sexuality, etc, its going to be

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

The death of acting, because at that point, your not acting, your just being yourself

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

No one has a right to know your [As they put it] Alphabet. Don't try to out people to get points for your agenda. And if they are LBGT+ ->

themselves its even worse as they should know better then to do that to someone who might not be out yet.

4 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

I hope one day we don't have to have this its just I'm human, I like what I like. No one cares, just humans being humans.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Actors should be allowed to act. Anthony Hopkins was a great Hannibal Lecter. Guess what? He isn't a real life cannibal.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Do these idiots think tom Holland is actually a super hero? That will Smith is an actual cop? Or should only cop actors play cops in movies?

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Isn’t the point of acting to pretend to be something you’re not?

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Personally, I do not have an alphabet. I have runes, hieroglyphs and an obscene configuration that will drive you to madness.

4 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

Ah yes, the two genders: Alphabet, and indescribable horror glyphs :D

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

My pronouns are not encompassed by human speech.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Valid as fuck. You do you. Gender and language are bullshit anyway :D

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

If you think actors should only play roles that line up with who they are in life, then you don't quite understand what an actor is.

I remember when the US military did something similar. Let us praise conservative policy. Good job.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 13

Also… if he’s an actor, hired to act, why does it matter that he’s not one of those letters?

4 years ago | Likes 50 Dislikes 2

Entirely true. However, the public generally decides what is their business and what is not. It's awful, but it is the way of things.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah, besides, gay actors have been playing straight characters since the invention of acting, it's not like they have trouble getting work.

4 years ago | Likes 30 Dislikes 1

I would even go so far and saying straight actors playing LGBTQIA+ (is it just me, or does it keep getting longer like its meant to be a>

4 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

running gag?) is a sign of normalization. 40 years ago, not many big stars would voluntarily pla a gay character thats not a joke.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Appendix carry (In the front) is perfectly safe as long as you use a good holster that covers the trigger. Which they aren't, but still.

90% of the ones in power, making the decisions, are bigots. They only accept those who are different because of pressure or profit

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

So coming out in any way can affect your career in a million unseen ways. You don't owe that to anyone.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Also, actors play people they are not, like all the time. That is literally their job.

4 years ago | Likes 256 Dislikes 3

I don't believe you.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I heard a joke once against Method Acting: If I wanted a butcher I would have hired one. I hired an actor to play a butcher, not become one.

Great example is Neil Patrick Harris on HIMYM. He played a straight man who sleeps around w/ tons of women & you'd never know hes gay.

4 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yes, but: casting actors who *are* of a certain identity to play characters of that identity is also important. Playing a career isn't (1)

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

(2) the same as representing an identity. Why cast a cis actor to play a trans person, when you could cast a trans actor? It's about

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Does that mean a trans actor can only play trans parts? If not why the double standard?

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

I *just* explained why not. It's about representation, "especially for marginalised communities".

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

(3) representation and equity, especially when it comes to marginalised communities.

(c'mon. It's called acting. Whoever can portray whatever/whoever as long as they do so persuasively)

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Gay characters being played at all is a huge win I dunno why we're being picky about representation. Of course things wil change with time.

4 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

Exactly. I'm not really sure, but I believe nurses in hospital sit coms aren't played by real nurses either.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Why are people so invested in knowing the sexuality of others?

4 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 1

Purity checks, power, clout.

4 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Because you can tell when a white person is playing a black character, but it's a lot harder to tell if an lgbtq person is playing an lgbtq

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 26

Character. People want representation in their media and a lot of them want the actual actor to be representative. If the actor hasn't

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 12

Explicitly come out, people can't be sure its ok that the actor is representing them. Because behavior is subjective

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 12

... But that's absurd. It's literally impossible to tell if they're LGBTQ, which is why demanding they are genuinely LGBTQ is crazy.

4 years ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 1

But it's what they do. Some people have to know the actor playing lgbt is lgbt for it to count. That's why they demand a statement. Doesn't

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 4

Matter if the actor does a good job, they need them to check the box to assist their buy in

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 4

Does it make it more authentic when an actor has experience? Sure. But it's ACTING for a reason. None of the relationships are real.

4 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 1

Acting is playing pretend, black face and other stereotypes are not okay, but it’s acting. It’s a deep empathetic process.

4 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

I meant if the character was supposed to be black but they cast a white guy. People want representation and to know the char was done right

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 4

I get that

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

I know that proper representation for minorities is good, and that diversity in Hollywood needs to increase. But also, isn’t the point of /1

4 years ago | Likes 28 Dislikes 3

acting somewhat that a person pretends to be something they’re not? It seems weird to me to demand that an actor is being cast “too much” /2

4 years ago | Likes 26 Dislikes 1

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

in a specific sexual orientation. Idk. 3/3

4 years ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 0

I think people are over extending the same problem regarding race and acting, where hollywood would cast white actors to play minority roles

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

rather than hire minority actors, and some people feel that, rather than hiring gay actors, they are casting straight actors to play gay

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

roles. The difference is that there's really nothing stopping gay actors from playing straight roles, unlike with the race issue.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Same can be said about disabilities too

4 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

True.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

So what are the rules now? You have to be gay to play gay? Straight to play straight? A real super powered superhero to play a superhero?

4 years ago | Likes 95 Dislikes 7

anybody who demands only LGBTQ+ actors should be allowed to play LGBTQ+ needs to go get fucked. to death.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

What's really weird is when people demand a trans person play a character who's transitioning. You want them to go BACK to the other gender?

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Well said!

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Cant be too famously gay either. Ruby Rose got lit up harder by lesbians than trump supporters. Cause she was tooo famous.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I assumed most of her problems were brought on by her own behavior (not I blame her for abandoning Batwoman, it's hot garbage).

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

This was at announcement of her getting thr part. Before we knew exactly how hot that trash fire was.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I was thinking that the same... and I don't care about what kind of sex people like. I want good actors doing good acting.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

There's two aspects to the argument in favor of LGBTQ actors playing LGBTQ roles as much as possible: a) they often get shut out of 1/

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 4

Straight, cis roles as it is, so constantly giving LGBTQ roles to straight, cis actors limits their options. Notably straight actors don't 2

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 4

face that kind of discrimination auditioning for LGBTQ roles. b) it's important to allow the LGBTQ community tell its own stories, just 3

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 4

like it is for racial minorities to tell theirs. I know straight playing gay isn't the same as "playing" another race, but it means a lot 4

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 3

For historically misrepresented groups to tell their own stories--and acting is only one part of the production but it has the most 5

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

There's also a subset of the trans community that simultaneously insists that trans people be cast in their chosen gender--and that ONLY 1/x

4 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 4

Yeah otherwise people like Eddie redmayne play tran women...

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

trans actors can be cast in a trans role. If TWAW, then any woman should be able to portray a transwoman so long as the character is 2/x

4 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 5

well-written. 3/3

4 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 5

The problem is more complicated than that but basically, gay/trans people are often ONLY cast for gay/trans roles, except they still have to

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

If u think there aren't & haven't been gay actors playing straight chars for decades then u must live in some world class fallout bunker.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

compete with cis/straight people to GET those roles, so they might not even get those much rarer spots. Casting a straight person to play

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

a gay person could be taking the role from a gay person, and additionally losing nuance that an actual gay person could bring to the role by

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

dint of experience. Personally, I think what we really need is more lgbt+ people in writing and directing, because all the gay roles in the

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

world aren't good if they're written by homophobes or people just looking for a few Progressiveness Points.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Your "letter" shouldn't matter. It's called "acting" not "being".

4 years ago | Likes 61 Dislikes 2

Doesn’t that apply to race as well

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Or even neurodiverse characters (i.e. big bang theory..which is kinda cringey looking back)

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

What? Explain

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Someone once described big bang theory as "blackface but for autism"...i.e. Sheldon is clearly autistic but they use it for laughs.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah, if anything you want more people with letters in the writing room then on stage as any good actor can make it work, not every ->

4 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

writer can write world views they haven't lived. So if you want diversity focus where it will do the best job of representing.

4 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

It’s tricky. On the one hand, we don’t want to revert to the days of white people in every role doing inappropriate caricatures, but also /1

4 years ago | Likes 43 Dislikes 12

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Race is visible. You can't cast someone and not know they're white, or black, or whatever. Sexual orientation/gender identity is different.

4 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 6

How about disabilities?

Lots of shades between black & white. Good actors have range. It’s sad to see the arbitrary ‘rules’ we invent for ourselves.

True. I’m thinking of Cliff Curtis, for example, who is Maori racially but who has had a long and glorious career as all the brown races. /1

It would be a loss if he was only allowed to play Maori characters, and that’s it. He’s a great actor. 2/2

It's not about visible differences, it's about knowing the baggage that comes with that life. If you're straight, you will never truly know

Let actors act, if you can find the kind of actor you want that actually is the kind of person the role is all the better. But don't ->

get hung up on it as the main objective. As sure having more LGBT+ actors is great but if the character is terribly written it's still ->

not going to be good representation. The writing and directing are more important to it then who the actor likes to fuck in their off time.
