In 97-98 I worked in 2 WTC. My bus stopped every morning across the street, and for a year, every morning Id get breakfast there. Got to know the staff and was such a regular that when I got a new job in midtown (WTC was my first real IT job) they the staff of that very BK the me a little going away /congrats party my lady day there. I hadn't thought about that in years, and now I'm sad

Your fun fact of the day: The high school in Hackers Also served this purpose. Stuyvesant High, which was only a half mile from the towers, was used as a base of operations by rescue workers. Sadly there was no swimming pool on the roof. It's on the first floor.

It was in 7 WTC, which also collapsed due to damage and fire from the collapse of the towers.
But also the location was just a large intact space near ground zero so it was used for other purposes as needed - apparently FDNY was on the 2nd floor and it was used as an as an infirmary at some point as well.

Man I remember being woken up wondering wtf the World Trade Towers were. (I was freshman). Came out to the living room to watch the news- saw the second plane fly into the tower live. It feels like imagery like that is so commonplace now, but back then it was absolutely horrific to witness.

Funny thing about that specific BK. I worked a few blocks away a few years ago (2018?)- went to get lunch and the balance they rang up was HIGH. I forget the exact total, but close to $20 for something usually around $10. I asked for clarification and the cashier asked “Oh, you work around here?” When I confirmed, he hit a button and the meal was 2/3 the original price. I was floored they charged tourists more. I’ve seen dirty water hotdog stands do it, but didn’t think a corp like BL would.

first time I ever visited NYC happened to coincide with the 2004 RNC, which was at Madison Square Garden, so the first thing I saw getting out of Penn Station was a Dunkin' where everyone inside was a uniformed NYPD officer lol

I remember the burger wars, getting a whopper for ¢.99. One time their broiler wasn't working well my 3 whoppers were, like, medium rare. I love a medium steak, but don't trust hamburger unless I grind the meat myself. I ate them anyway. (They were transcendent)

9/11/01 was picture day at my school. I left math class to get my picture taken and came back to the TV on and the first tower billowing a giant column of smoke, watched the second plane live. I think for everyone old enough to remember, there is certainly a demarcation line in our lives pre and post 9/11. It really marked a turning point for our society. There was a brief moment of unity followed by incidents of anti Middle Eastern racism (and often against people mistaken for Middle Eastern).
