Former student of mine had been in an accident with her boyfriend driving the motorcycle. She had been wearing shorts. Years later when she was in my class, she still had gravel embedded in her thigh (too much and too small to operate). She said there was pain, but every so often a piece would work itself out. And every medical worker I've known has said no to motorcycles.
Show me what part of a typical bicycle helmet that covers and protects the face as to prevent my face from being scraped against pavement through zero fault of my own.
Without trying to be funny, if you're referring to motorbikes, in the UK at least, it's easy to buy full face, if however you're referring to bikes, while yes, typical helmets are often head only, full face ones are still easily available.
As with both bikes & motorbikes, head, open face, & full face helmets are easily available, so it would depend on what type you chose to buy, if head/open face, then yes, rash time, if you chose to buy full face, then no.
Watching people find out that as you slide, some of the flesh grinds away, but the heat from friction BURNS everything around it is always funny. ATGATT or sell your bike, buckaroo.
This is called a 'Low-Side' ... when braking, weight comes off the back tire patch to the front, reducing the friction the rear tire is getting from the road, resulting in this.
Happened to me back in 1993, when I was commuting to work in pants & dress shirt LOL
The little side to side lean isn't itself a problem, that's something a lot of riders do, I've heard plenty of people suggesting it helps warm the tires up more evenly, which is great for traction. Should have stuck to one lane.
Low-siding in a turn means he leaned to the point the side of the machine contacted the road, lifting up one of the wheels and starting the slide. Leaning the body further inwards so the bike can be more upright helps prevent this. So does slowing tf down in the turn.
Yep. It's a 'lowside', where the lean is too extreme and the wheels get lifted off the road surface by some other part of the machine impacting the road.
Pushplay's got it right, leaning inward means leaning into the turn. In the image above, you can see how the bike is being held upright enough that nothing but tire is touching the ground. Not leaning, or worse, leaning outwards away from the turn, would have increased that angle to the point the bike would have slid out like in OPs video.
Inwards here means inside the turn. Moving the center of gravity inside a turn at speed keeps the bike more upright. You don't have to be this extreme for it to work.
Pretty much guarantee he put the front brake on hard there. That's nowhere near enough lean/speed to have lost traction otherwise (unless there's some unseen sand or something on the road).
If the wounds are full of sand and dirt, we use a toothbrush first. The suffering triples and the noise quadruples. Hearing protection is good then. And a roll of gauze to bite into.
My friend saw motorcycle leggings at a shop while looking for new pants. While she'd look good in those, even she had doubts about the safety part. Asked her how many tattoos she was willing to lose (thighs, legs and much more). She'll buy pants! :)
Yea my Uncle is a cautionary tale. My Dad, who is mentally ill and never drinks alcohol, decided after drinking with my Uncle that he could teach him how to ride a wheelie on his CBR600rr. My Uncle had only ridden my Dads dirt bike a couple of times prior. He manages to drop too much clutch, stand it straight up going about 60 in a parking lot, and crash, sliding into a dumpster. Has permanent road-rash to this day, on both knees and elbows. Totaled the bike, but at least he wore a helmet...
but you didn't learn (i'm not talking about someone verbally telling you) without falling without gear first, we all learn to wear protection while riding because we fall and slide then suffer, suffering is what ingrains information into our brain that we NEED protection not because someone told us to, but because it's painful.
After watching it a million times, I think he just leaned it too far, and touched the frame down. Putting weight on the chassis takes it off the tires, which loses traction. That’s why motorcycles have footpegs that fold, and have nubs on them like feelers. They’re supposed to touch first, before anything hard.
Surprising, because it doesn’t look like he’s going fast enough to drag the hard stuff. One more reason to avoid scooters, I guess.
I’ve ridden a scooter that was slow and wobbly, I did not like it. I’ve ridden fast and skinny ones and didn’t feel that awkwardness. Fat-slow scooters are like an elephant walking a tight rope, it’s not fun.
He doesn't have to die, just effectively remove himself from the gene pool. Self castration could win a Darwin award. This guy could still reproduce, so no Darwin award.

Dumb assess everywhere you look. Without armor. Without helmets.
What is fun to watch is when someone get in a fight with someone still wearing full body armor.

Yep, just gotta remember to close the visor so the other person can't grab the chin bar.

Where we're going we need no rash

He sacrificed his arms to save his head. Hopefully this will be a lesson he will learn from

Kudos for the aftermath video. The world needs more of those, so people can learn in advance that there really are consequences to being a dumbass.

and this is on the lighter end of the consequences - not even a broken bone
I just hope the dumbass got a bit smarter from it

As someone who has had road rash on 50% of their face before, I do not find laughing at the pain of treating it amusing.

You should've worn a helmet.

So wearing a bike helmet would have done nothing to prevent me getting road rash on 50% of my face.

There are multiple ways to lowside. Looks like he just leaned so far something other than the tires contacted the road. Or gravel.

Don't you mean "lean the body further outwards"?

If he leaned the body further inwards he would have only hit the ground faster.

Serious question. What happened on his left turn? Was it his apex line? Maybe sand on the street?

He got pegged for sure.

There's scraping sound before he starts to slide. He might have caught a foot peg or something on a scooter not designed for that much lean.
