The bad stuff in life stands out more and is remembered for longer periods of time due to the nature of trauma and how potent and damaging it is to individuals...but that doesnt mean there's more bad than good in the world.

Unpopular opinion. But there are a lot more good people helping others out there than people actively hurting others. Sure those in power are indifferent to causing suffering some even enjoy it. But we are way more likely to talk about the bad than the good. People are just more interested in the negative. A news channel that played all the goodness of mankind would have a fraction of the ratings of a doom and gloom channel.
That this simple ethical act warranted a memorial statue hints at just how little social progress we've made. Still, I'd rather have the statue to nudge people in the direction of thinking about being selfless themselves rather than not have the nudge at all.
But my question is, why is the side of the river designed to do the thing that bathtubs do with spiders? It's just a steep slope you can't climb up. Why would you build it like that?
Space constraints and physics. A steeper angle means more water volume in less land area. But too steep and it collapses when there's no water pushing back. So it's built as steep as possible, to maximize volume.
For anyone wondering the significance: in WW2 the Nazis forced people to remove their shoes and fall into the Danube because the shoes were more valuable to them than human life.
Sure, just didn't want people that did not click the wiki link to think people just jumped into the Danube voluntarily or involuntarily (under threat of death).

Prevent floods, plus shallow slope = exponentially more materials and more land around the body of water.
