I remember that dungeon in Shin Megami Tensei 3: Nocturne. All sorts of optical illusions like this, all using geometry to mess with your head.

Great game.

I know exactly how this works and what is happening but it still breaks my brain every time.

Wonder if people try to look closer and poke their eye.

I imagine that in person, depth perception breaks the illusion so it's obvious what it is.

Prolly

In which case, I would love to buy one

Oh cool, it took watching the video twice to see the illusion and now I can't see it the other way

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

How is this illusion called?

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's because the vid is 2D, and the 3d is in your brain.

Put it back!

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

How do you know my brain is 3D

2 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Dumb, dumber, dumbest - see? 3Ds!

Don't assume my dimension

The illusion works in person too, it being a video has no bearing on the illusion.

It's like the "big moon" illusion. Even if you know it's an illusion your brain will still see it.

It also helps, when in person, to not let it be too close to the face. Such illusions work best at a distance where your eyes don't immediately go "wait that's closer/father than it should be" due to the stereoscopic vision.

After some discussions with some fellow Imgurians, it seems that not everyone experiences the illusion equally. Veritasium did a video about a similar depth/perspective illusion and noted that not everyone sees the illusion. Does anyone know what causes the difference experiences? This is fascinating!

Do you know this for sure? I have one of these toys in this video:

And it does not work in person unless you're far away and squint a lot

Interesting! So it seems it doesn't work for everyone. Check this related thread

I had the dragon one in a large open plan office and I had lots of questions about it (it was freaking people out) but I don't recall anyone being unable to see the illusion.

Veritasium did a video about a similar perspective/depth illusion and he noted that not everyone could see it. I wonder what causes the difference in people's experience?

Even more specifically, this is filmed with a single lens and you have stereoscopic vision.

Not If I close one eye

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

My vision defaults to the eye without a cataract, so same effect

That's how a lot of these have to work in real life. Like the little dragon one. I used to have a printout of it that I meticulously assembled but with both my eyes open I couldn't see the illusion. With one eye closed it was amazing.

This isn't true for the vast majority of people. I'm not sure why you could only experience the illusion with one eye closed, but most can see it regardless.

Actually, this illusion is similar, and apparently not everyone can see it. Can you see this illusion at all? With both eyes open or with one closed?

Not sure what your sample size is but that's the exact one I printed up and had on my cubicle. No one in the office could see the "illusion" unless they had one eye closed. One guy couldn't see it even with one eye closed but he was a little slow so he may not have understood what he was looking at. If you've only seen it in video it's going to work for everyone all the time. Seeing it in person is different.
