There is no miracle method. Most of these are programmed to release their grip when the claw goes up ("Wow, so close!" - No mate, not even close). They can be precisely programmed by the owner (one succes every 20 attempts, for example), and can even delay the next win if someone had a lucky shot.
That's what's clever about this method! If timed right, the programmed release happens when the claw is over the hole! Still tricky, for sure, but at least it's back to skill instead of luck. The way those machines work, they should absolutely be banned.
Japanese claw machines are so much better than American ones. Most of the american ones are just plain rip-off machines even in states where that's not strictly legal. But the Japanese ones are actually skill-based. They're sometimes harder, but it's possible to get good. So it's an actual game.
All of the machine’s settings can be controlled by the owner like gripper strength, what works for one win might not work again and each machine is different.
Never to that degree, but I used to be good at the claw games. Won three toys in one go once! Knocked one in on pickup of another, dragged it into a second, then dropped the grab in. It was a good day! Then they started rigging them more, plus costs went up, so I stopped. :/
Yup, I remember back in the early 00's I used to scoop plushies up one after another for 50 eurocents like crazy. At some point I had like 10 Spyro the Dragon plushies and a heap of pokemon, Digimon etc. So bummed out when mom decided to clean out the attic and toss all of that away. But yeah I tried a claw machine last year and my god they are so rigged that I couldn't even scoop a small lightweight plushie anymore.
The last one I tried cost a full bill, dropped around the plush, rose up, *then* started weakly grabbing on the way up. I was so disappointed! Like, on principle. It wasn't even about the prize at that point.
Surely he went home with more than just a stuffed animal that night. And that's where she'll learn that the usefulness in him having these highly skilled hands are indeed 'transferable'.
Ah they are in Japan. If this was the US the machine would have those crappy Knotty balls filling 95% of the machine and the other 5% would be stuffed with badly wedged Spongebob dolls that aren't worth a dime. The claw strength would be nerfed 90% of the time too. I wouldn't mind if the prizes were cool but lately for the last 15 years or so every claw machine is full of crap.
Some youtuber showed how the claws work. They are rigged that only every X tries does the claw use full strength. So, no skill involved, just luck that it's that X time when the coin went in.
Ackshually, no. These machine have the same basic adjustable odds of success going back a century or more. My understanding is even today, the settings for the odds, whether electronic or old school mechanical are the same. Did a deep dive on em about 10 years ago, though I suppose it coulda changed since.
That's... Not how those claw machines work, though. I could see that applying to some of the 'stop the light on the jackpot' games, but you can't force a win with the claw machine without actually moving the claw onto the item
Yes, but the odds are still stacked against you, because you are relying on both your own aim plus the chance that you happen to be on an attempt that the claw will close tightly. Even in OP's example, had the player not used the swing of the claw, it would have never made it to the chute on it's own.
At some point, as a kid, I managed to convince my parents to let me try one. They explained to me that it's a scam, but I tried anyway. Luckily I caught on pretty quickly.
Can confirm. Took daughter and her friends to one of these, bought them some tokens, couldn't stop them from burning through their allowance money trying in vain to win something :( It's like legalized gambling for kids with a much worse return rate than slots.
I've been to this place. The staff wander around and provide tips like in this video. Spent about $100 on two kids, walked out with some decently sized rewards after trading in the stuff won in the machines. Whoever is in charge of prizes also works hard to get uncommon things - I got a Pokemon Go team Instinct bag with my winnings.
Basically you don't feel ripped off leaving there.
It varies. Some give you as much time as you want but only let you move each axis once. Others let you move as much as you want but only give you 30 seconds before dropping automatically.
so apparently there is a two button claw machine that goes forward and right only which evolved into the knob version but kept the 2 directions. most claw machines now are multi directional
Source: my butt. Maybe the "Once Per Direction" is older way to maximize the losses, before someone figured they could just make the claw fail intentionally, grabbing a thing and letting go to milk that gambling addiction of "Almost winning, next time for sure!". So once-move's are used in places where it's illegal to tamper with the claw, or feel bad for literally scamming people, and prefer to make their profits from actual arbitrary skill challenge.
"*I* haven't seen it. Therefore, anyone who claims it exists is either old, stupid, or making shit up." It's a whole wide world dude, and the fraction that you, personally, have experienced is so tiny as to be microscopic. Try to have a bit more humility and to keep an open mind.
The thing is, due to some law that doesn’t have a name that goes with it but should, in these situations the person you’re disagreeing with on the internet turns out to have a PhD in claw machines or whatever. The Law of Ackchyually, maybe.
Source: Most claw machine games I've seen in the past few years. Maybe it depends on your area, but the ones where you're free to move the claw as many times as you want before dropping it is definitely the rarer version in the arcades in my area.
NussKnuspermix
They have a secret mechanism that they can activate to make it easier after many tries or if you complain.

Can someone teach The Grim Reaper this trick? He's been having a little trouble getting his prize as of late....

Yea maybe if the machine acutaly grabs but alot of them dont until its pulling back up
cadesama
There is no hack that works on all claw machines. Dependent on local law, they can have different programming that causes automatic failure.

Once this catches on, they will have to find another way to rig the machine.

I wonder if this technique is possible on Japanese machines ?

Some of them, yeah, they have machines like this there in addition to the bigger ones with plastic claws

It gives me the shits when the claw instantly goes limp wristed the moment you pick the item up.

Yep it's like a slot machine or children. Only the reward was never there and you can still lose when the claw grips correctly if you miss. 100% Scam.

Honestly, I love them. I can get context via the pacing of what's being said when I'm not in a place that I can listen to the video.

They are programmed to pay off a certain percentage of the time - there is little to no skill involved in winning. It's a grift

That's... Not how those claw machines work, though. I could see that applying to some of the 'stop the light on the jackpot' games, but you can't force a win with the claw machine without actually moving the claw onto the item

They've been proven to deliberately have feeble grip strength some of the time to cause it to fail even with a perfectly aimed drop.
PrincessBatCat
You still need the skill to move the crane into position to begin with.
TheCarpe
Yes, but the odds are still stacked against you, because you are relying on both your own aim plus the chance that you happen to be on an attempt that the claw will close tightly.
