I started getting meat from a local butcher that both receives meat from local farms and delivers. Still not cheap, we're talking maybe $10/lb for ground beef. But a whole lot less fuckery, and in line price-wise with the "organic", source-blind beef from the local supermarket.

I honestly have no clue where they get this math. Up until Trump took office again, I was paying $3.50-3.75lb. The same store now offers $7/lb. Inflation on ground beef in particular is nearing 100%.

Almost 20% of ranchers have given up or retired since 2017 with very few entering the business. This combined with the block on imports from Mexico due to Screwworm have inflated US meat prices to a level that cant compete with imports.

The largest (JBS) also has a history of illegal activities both in the US (EEOC violations) and their parent country, Brazil (defrauded National pension). GOP/Trump DOJ have also investigated them for price collusion during both terms.

Loss of pay combined with the increase in overhead (fuel, feed, etc.) makes it impossible for them to replenish cattle supply. Many sell and reduce their capacity to pay off their other expenses.
