You’ve heard me talk about my conservation breeding project of Hyllus diardi jumping spiders if you’re here a lot :) For those new- I’m part of a nationwide breeding project to make this rare species a stable captive bred population so we no longer need to take them from the wild for the pet trade

It’s been a really difficult process with several setbacks and a lot of disappointment- like I have been feeling like a fuckin failure. But this morning I was misting and checking on all the spoods… AND I FOUND EGGS!! I shrieked loud enough to break glass and scared the bejeezus out of @MrStonedlikeicheckedoutmedusa but I don’t even care; it’s worth shrieking about!!! I really can’t put into words how elated I am over this! I started keeping Hyllus about 4 years ago and completely fell in love. I knew I wanted to eventually breed them, even before this project started. And it’s finally happening!!! EEEEEEEK!!!!

I bred Boa Constrictors for the same reason. Actually, I bred many reptiles, but Central American Boas and Mexican Boas were most important to me as they were close to the US and they were quickly being depleted for the pet trade. At this point they are being farmed in their native ranges so they are less likely to decline in wild numbers. Conservation is so important.

Conservation is SO important; I can’t stress that enough! It’s awesome that you were part of that effort!

What other reptiles do you breed 👀 I have mourning geckos that don’t actually breed because parthenogenesis but hopefully I’ll get babies from my Lesbian Gecko Coven. I also eventually want to try breeding hognoses

I've bred western hognose snakes, Kenyan sand boas, barons racers, yellow anacondas, bearded dragons, tokay geckos, spotted turtles, eastern box turtles, eastern snapping turtles, Mata Mata turtles, Argentine Boas, Suriname Boas, Columbian Boas, Irian Jaya carpet pythons, jungle carpet pythons, savu pythons, children's pythons, rosy Boas, black roughneck monitors, savanna monitors, black and white tegus, various kingsnakes, viper Boas, various bullsnake mutations, gargoyle geckos, crested geckos

That's just scratching the surface. I used to work for animal jungle in their reptile department in VA Beach. It was in a foodlion that they purchased and turned into a pet store. I had access to many species that they would wild import. I ended up building a $45,000 breeding operation to reduce their reliance on wild imports. Over seven years I produced thousands of animals that were healthier and didn't tax wild populations. I ended up having a good relationship with the Norfolk zoo too.

You had my dream career. I went to school and got a degree in conservation to be able to do such things. Never had the opportunity. It is so restrictive getting into the field and being part of conservation efforts.
