I've made the decision to do some extreme sports of the culinary variety!

Regular Buldak is about 4400 scoville units, while 2x is 8800 scoville units.
That means that this guy is at an adorable 12000 scoville units, take or leave a few you lose during cooking.

For reference, Jalapeno's are at 2500 to 8000 scovilles.

Thomas Editon: I've been informed that I mathed wrong, and the spice Level is closer to 13200.

First impressions? It smells really good, it's Buldak spicy chicken noodles!
Added greens for something fresh (I lied, they were frozen).

Added a pork cheese schnitzel for some meat and crunch.

And... It's yummy and SpIcY in that wonderfully painful way!

My lips are wiggling, and my tongue demands aloe vera!

But, what does my colon think? Let's ask him:

What's that? You liked it? That's great news! For I finished the whole thing!

I spiritually resonate with this image. Smiling, but singed!

What do you think, my colon? Shall I keep buying these?

See? He's extatic to learn more German!

But for real, Buldak 3x spicy was good! Super recommend for any other spice heads!

I'm not sure why these are advertised as 4k - 16k scovilles respectively depending on which you get - they are clearly a lot hotter - feels like they left off a whole zero.

They have a 3x now? Jesus. The 2x was too spicy for me to eat. I'd take like 2-3 bites and then have to wait 5 minutes for my mouth to cool off. Even the 1x is just a little too uncomfortable for me to really enjoy. It just doesn't taste good enough to be worth it, plus I dont like how oily the noodles are.

i always add a kraft single, the traditional Korean way!

My teenager wanted to try one of these but doesn’t fully understand cooking 101. He super heated the pan and vaporized the spice packet. He managed to inhale the Vapor and basically pepper spray the entire house. This is what we now deemed the ‘spice lung’ event. I do not recommend- especially if you live in a small space.

Hahahahaha! Sadly I cannot find that x3 variety!

3x4.400 = 13.200 not 12.000 or is it “rounded” down?

2 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

Yes I didn't math correctly, sue me.

Ok that shit doesn’t fuck around. Not a box at the local Asian market and I can only use about a quarter of the sauce packets.

Meanwhile, even "mild" noodles are too hot for me.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

spicy but i had spicier , and im supposed to have sensitive throat to spices after my mother.

I feel sorry for your butt.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I have the Tabasco Scorpion as “backup” which is supposed to be between 23.000 - 33.000 SHU’s. And we can by these 2x & 3x hot in “family” packs of 6 here in our toko.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

It really is nice if prepared properly. I tried to turn the stirfry version into soup once...it was bad. Read instructions folks.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

As a fellow spicy lover. I think you should up your game a little and try Daebak Ghost Pepper Black noodles. They have a pretty good kick to them.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

I've had Buldak 3x. I love the taste and flavor but it's too spicy. It's literally painful to eat and it burns both going in and going out.

2 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

To me, even the 1x has no flavor beyond bitter acrid capsaicin. And Buldak has completely taken over the ramen selection in my local shops.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I thought the 1x was exactly that. Delicious, but too painful. I like my chili peppers, but that's just too intense for me. I don't hate myself *that* much.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I really like the flavor, but it's one of those things that you have to ask "How much hot is too much" when you start actually considering putting some ice up your chocolate starfish the next day.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

got a chicken place downtown that does nashville style hot chicken with ghost pepper, reaper and something else mixed. their tenders are something like a million scoville. damned good flavor too

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I refuse to believe anyone can taste a damn thing over the pain of that much heat

2 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 2

Flavor and heat are very different things, habanero, reapers and ghost are all hot but have unique tastes

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 3

I'm sure they do, but as far as I'm concerned, it's like noticing that the chainsaw has fantastic vibration damping as it cuts your arm off

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 2

Sorry for your lack of taste I guess

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 7

You don't think it's like holding a candle up to the sun? I just do not get how people can eat habaneros, nevermind reapers and ghost peppers and federal-pound-you-in-the-ass peppers

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

Generally you taste the flavor first, and the rainbow second.

2 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

I've had those and they are quite horrible!

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

13k scoville units is considered mild.. kindergarten stuff.. am I missing something?

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

Yeah, the fact they're measuring it on a tiny diluted sample and put it on the packet. That's some shady shit man. No pun intended.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

A few independent folks have tested the spice packet in these things to over 200k SHU. No one is entirely sure how Buldak's math works.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Lmaoo got it. So, pretty hot.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I don't like spicy food, but I've tried this very same one! I got half way before giving up.

Fun fact. If you do not chug water or liquid and just bear with it the liquid lava hurty squirties do not occur. Capsaicin is broken down by digestion but when you flush it through your intestines are affected and send it all down at speed leading to the burning butthole bullets.

2 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

I've never had spicy poop. I wonder what that says about my colon.

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Your colon loves you so much it's preventing you from feeling the burn.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You probably do not chug water when eating it.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I definitely do not. Is that a thing? I drink diet soda with it.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It is. Capsaicin breaks down during normal digestion. But if you drink a bunch of liquid it flushes it down into the intestines before it can where they react to it by cramping and forces it all out before it can be broken down and FIRE IN THE HOLE! So yeah just not drinking too much while eating spicy foods means no afterburn.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The Burn goes all the way thru.

I am ok with standard Tabasco heat. Anything hotter than that is just not enjoyable for me.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

How was the flavor? I love spicy, I love ramen. My cabinet is stocked full of Nongshim - have you had that? Can you compare? I'll look for this one.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Even the 1x Buldak is probably about 2x as hot as Nongshim Shin Ramen. It's very hot. The 2x is basically inedible in my opinion. 3x must be absurd. As for taste, it's ok, but it wasn't anything I'd go out my way for. Very oily, too. Much better, more sane options there.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Buldak 1x sauce is like Aadvark sauce. Imagine eating a bowl of Aadvark soup. 2x and 3x are a bigger jump than you're imagining. I love hot sauces, Buldak is probably one of my favorites at the moment, and I love a variety of their ramen...but I'm not going 2x or 3x spicy ramen anymore.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

To me, these things taste nasty, just straight acrid pepper oleoresin. Bitter, almost metallic, heat. But some folks love it. (shrug)

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Delicious, it tastes exactly like Buldak spicy chicken, just hotter.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Why is Ramen soo spicy now. It's getting to where the only Ramen in stock these days are maruchan chicken, and 18 kinda of fire to blast your backdoor. What about the other savory flavors eh?

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It's not? Vast majority of ramen are the same basic flavors as usual, but Buldak stuff has gotten meme popular so you see it a lot, and there's quite a few different types. Regular spicy ramen(ala Shin Ramen) are still very popular. Honestly though, if your store has Maruchan ramen, you probably aren't at the right place to do some good ramen shopping.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

There is an Asian market nearby where I get my Ramen. They've got imported stuff the likes of which would make a weeb cream their jeans. Thai hot pot with the lotus in, chappagetti, neoguri, all sorts of Ramen ranging from the kind with just a flavor packet, to the kind with veggies, seasoned oil, and the naruto. But for every savory flavor there is at least 4-5 kinds of spicy. You can buy fresh fish heads and gong fu tea on one side, but 80% of the Ramen is spicy.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I mean, spicy is normal and popular. But the vast majority of the spicy stuff isn't like 'painful spicy' like Buldak. And if you're being honest, you know you'll have tons of options for non-spicy stuff if that's what you really want.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

13000 scoville? That's....okay, I am a spice head, so my perception is VERY scewed, but that is mild AF.

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 3

It's for the finished dish, not concentrated sauce that you use a single dab of that then gets diluted over the dish you're actually eating.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Their numbers are VERY off. In reality the spice packet is well over 200k SHU in this thing, but Buldak uses some weird math in their labels

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It's really not mild whatsoever. Even the 2x is insanely hot. And as a spice head, you should know how misleading scoville counts are as you dont know what's really being measured.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That's the weird thing, I am also a spice head, I munch bird eye in thai food, and this guy is spicy.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Interesting. I may have to give it a go. Love when I find something that surprises me with heat, as long as the flavor is there as well.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I don't understand the Buldak scoville scale. I've had hot sauces that are 250k on the scale that are more mild than the 2x noodles.

2 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

Different spices can hit differently, despite being at similar spots on the scoville scale. You can get used to certain types, like the peppers in Mexican food, but then you run into stuff from East Asia, or vice versa, and it buuuuuuuurns.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Exactly! They're flat out lying about the SHU on the packet, the 3x is more like 260,000 - 300,000 if I'm being conservative and I'm familiar with spicy food.

2 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

I have tasted 700 000 SHU sauces that were more tasty and has less STING to it.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

This is good to hear. I thought I was a wimp.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

The Buldak 3x is just STINGING! Nothing of the taste of chili. Very dissapointed. The ordinary Buldak spicy is much more tasty.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I could barely handle the ordinary Buldak in terms of overall heat tolerance, but man is it tasty.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I agree with this 100%. The numbers are way too low. Also IMO the buldak stuff tastes like shit. I've heard people say they taste really good, they can taste the chicken, etc. I have a high spice tolerance, like ghost peppers and moruga scorpions and whatnot. I can taste it just fine, and it tastes like chemical BS to me.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

My theory is that they mean the SHU of the prepared dish. Like 250k+ sauce probably, but 12k when diluted into the cooked noodles maybe.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

That's a pretty good theory. Especially considering that I leave no water left and skip the stir-fry phase, so I'm basically raw-dogging the entire sauce packet over the fully drained noodles.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You're not supposed to have a broth with it, you should put the sauce directly on the drained noodles, as per their instructions.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Oh I'm sure they measured it on a tiny diluted sample and it came to 13k. That's like saying ghost pepper is only 100,000 if you take a tiny bite. I guess they say that bc a whole 3x packet can actually hurt your guts, like physically. So they don't give the measurement for the whole thing at all. They're gotta be saying that to avoid liability, I'm pretty sure of that.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That's not what they said. They suggested Buldaks Scoville value was referencing the fully prepared dish.

250k Scoville Sauces Scoville value is referencing the pure sauce. You don't eat the pure sauce. You put some of it in/on your food. If you do that, it won't be 250k Scoville that you taste in the fully prepared dish. You know, like when you mix a few drops red coloured water with uncoloured water and the resulting liquid is less red than the original red coloured water? Just with hot.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That ghost pepper example is wrong and right at the same time. Of course a nibble ghost pepper won't be as bad as a whole one. But thats not what dilution means and that's not what this is about. This is about the Scoville value of a ghost pepper vs. the Scoville value of a dish with a bit of ghost pepper in it.

Example in practice: I won't drink Tabasco or Siracha. But i eat food with Tabasco or Siracha in it. Not rocket science.
