I bought one of his books on ADHD, "Scattered Minds", some time ago and true to form, I haven't even been able to make myself open it yet. :')

welp. yes , I mean, fuck, yes.

1 year ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Yep.

Here's an additional layer to the fucked-up-ness:

When you lack that safety, but DON'T experience a traumatic event that might drive you to therapy, you may never have this type of conversation and realize the greater injury you'd incurred. You'll never put it together. "Other kids got beaten, or raped. Me? Boring childhood. Nothing to report." Couldn't be further from the truth. Which then leaves you ignorant to when you create similar unsafe environments for others, including your kids.

Inwas three. I went straight to my mom. Turns out I was the last one of my 4 siblings by the same guy.

I've remained relatively unscathed by the incident while my siblings who were afraid to speak up have struggled.

Trauma is fucked up.

I tried reading that book, didn’t get very far. Maybe I’ll give it another shot.

Ive often tried to subscribe to sorrow shared is half the sorrow and joy shared is twice the joy but everything has exceptions of course

Based on personal experience, no it's not, not always.

1 year ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Well if you share it with an asshole they can make it worse, for sure.

"Toddlers in a kitchen" is my favorite way to explain two types of people. The first type is people who genuinely want to help but lack the skills needed to assist and so need more help than they can offer which basically doubles the work for you. The second type is people who want to FEEL helpful while not actually doing anything that isn't immediately entertaining for themselves and will disappear entirely if at any point they feel less than 100% appreciated and entertained and then blame you.

1 year ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Fuck, that second part hurt on a subatomic level. The same people are the types who "wonder what happened to you" after years of no communication, despite letting you down when you needed their support beforehand. Add insult to injury, they had contact info the whole time but also made zero effort to reach out & apologize/reconcile. No time left in my life for that bullshit.

This is why sex education is important, even at a younger age. It teaches kids where the lines are and what to do when lines are crossed. A kid that knows that they are being preyed upon is a kid that will tell someone that it is happening. If you don't know then you can't say.

The ADHD link isn't working for me and I can't find it on YouTube. Does anyone have a link or what else to search besides the title?

The documentary link for me says it isn't available. I do have the book "When the body says no," but I haven't finished it yet. I have severe cptsd, anxiety and depression from abuse that started basically since after being born. I hope everyone that needs it can get the help they need. It's a tough world out there with lessening empathy.

I have no idea what life would be like without trauma. I've been swimming in the shit all my damn life. I have no idea what it would feel like to be safe.

I am raising a 5 year old and this really makes me think about how I let him feel safe and open with me; as the bigger disciplinarian between my partner and I it really makes me think about how I correct their behavior and how I can make them feel safer rather than afraid to be open.....

I don't have time to watch all of this right now, especially with volume, so I'm just commenting so that I can find it after work.

I've never thought about trauma like that.

Gabor saved my life. With an audiobook.

I haven't been to war. I can't imagine Combat PTSD.

However, I have complex PTSD which involved me hiding a severe childhood trauma from myself until one day I found it, deep in my mind.

My uncle tried to kill me in Grade 3.

My dad knows about the knife he had pressed to my chest. I didn't. I told my dad he held the knife to me, and he described it.

My Mom and my Dad love me. They didn't know. I was protecting them.

Which book, if I may ask? I am not military PTSD, but I've been diagnosed. Had an escalation last week that scared both me and my wife (she'd never seen it happen and I was caught totally off guard. Nothing violent but I did not recognize my own mind for a while). I see a therapist but some extra help and simple clarity is always welcome.

Scattered Minds

On Audible, maybe in Palace (audible free from your library)

Please be safe and keep rested and breathing

1 year ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Thanks! I'm doing much better and my therapist said my escalation time was better (about an hour) than it had been the couple times before. Breathing, hugs from the wife and cats as well as a friend who was in the Iraq theater keeping it clear helped. Appreciate the info.

Gabor Mate is the fucking champion even though he's got some out there ideas. He was the doctor who worked in Vancouvers East Hastings safe consumption site 30 years ago when it was shocking. I took a day long training with him. He's fantastic. I don't know if he's totally RIGHT about everything but boy his outlook definitely means SOMETHING.

The downtown east side is still shocking friend.

Sometimes a good faith left field approach is necessary to see the truth

1 year ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 1

Agreed, his voice and his work are phenomenal and so needed in this world

1 year ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Can you share some of your skepticism on his ideas? I'm curious.

1 year ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

It's not that I'm skeptical I just haven't heard it many other places. The connection between trauma (higher cortisol levels) and greater allergies and allergic response (as cortisol plays a big part in the allergic response).

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

For instance, he has gone so far as to say he thinks trauma is responsible for ADHD. And when he was met with expert opinions that pointed out that his theory doesn't match what we know so far, he doubled down. I used to really love him but that really put me off.

1 year ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Well if early trauma puts you into survival mode that goes unresolved.... i could see it being true. The effects of constantly being on edge leading to attention problems. I'm no Dr. tho

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

It just doesn't work like that. It's like saying "the world isn't built for little people and therefore they experience trauma in society. Therfore trauma makes you short". No dude. Neurodiverse people just exist, we've always existed. If the trauma thing were true, you'd see extreme ADHD in ex war zones or following super traumatic events. But that's not what happens. ADHD and PTSD/CPTSD are not the same.

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

my assertion is that untreated problems don't go away, they just get worse.... not short people have hurt feeling because they can't reach shit or what ever you are on about... and no one is genocide-ing neurodivergent people here. they're real. And it's not the same but, may be connected the way HIV and AIDS are.

My childhood was utterly untraumatic. Good family, loving parents, we weren't rich but we never struggled either (or if we did, my parents never let it show in any way we could notice). I have ADHD like fuuuuuuuuuuck. Diagnosed and medicated.
