I bet AI Gene Wilder will also be the show's announcer, explain the rules, tell jokes, etc. from a big screen on the wall as if he were in his office upstairs.
They can use all the AI they want, it's not gonna capture the magic. Gene Wilder's voice isn't why he nailed the role and Netflix doesn't have the balls to try.
Using AI for the voice is a bizarre choice... just why? Thats really the epitome of crowbarring AI into everything. Just use a different person. The show, which I infer is like a wonka themed game show of some kind, doesnt even sound like a horrible idea for a show, but it will be entirely soured by this decision...
The cadence, the intensity, the inflections, the timing... it sounds like a soulless abomination of a phantasm attempting to parrot Gene Wilder. Utterly despicable.
Like... they couldn't pay a voice actor to imitate his voice?? They'll happily replace us all with AI renditions and pay nobody. All they care about is that profit number
I am dejected over this, and agree with your title - it's ghoulish.
I realize that during the time span that is my expected lifetime, we will see a beloved actor or actress sell their likeness at their lowest point, and in a terrible way that takes advantage of them, and we will collectively be beaten over the head by them at every financial opportunity until the end of time. This is but the beginning.
Because AI can't actually create. It can't make anything new. It can only recycle and regurgitate what already exists. That's it. And that's the part that AI bros just don't get. There's nothing actually new coming out of any of this, it's just everything we already have, remixed.
People taught them this was profitable by constantly worshiping a whitewashed ideal of bygone decades. There's a reason I absolutely loathe the 80s nostalgia we're being constantly force fed, and I'm not going to like it any better when it shifts to decades I actually grew up in.
I've come to the conclusion that the nostalgia that gets sold back to us is a very subtle form of fascist propaganda. A longing for a brighter past which never really existed...? Check.
Honestly that idea is very much reinforced by those horrifying AI generated TikToks of idealized white '80s teenagers talking directly to the camera about how much life must suck now, and how we should long for the simpler times that they inhabit
just don't watch it. after being burned on 2 or so reboots in theaters, i determined I'd never pay for another. more people need to quit supporting this shit. make it unprofitable and it will stop. Do you truly care about reality TV in a fake chocolate factory?
This doesn't sound like Wilder to me. It sounds like John Lovitz. WEll, the over the intercom sounds like Mathew Broderick, but the rest of it sounds like Lovitz.
Legally, they don't need any authorisation. Your likeness is owned by you and only you (which, legally, includes how you sound). Nobody else can own your likeness (for the US, that would be the 13th amendment), so on your death, you become public domain. This doesn't mean someone can start copying albums or films, as those have a copyright that is separate from the person.
Actually, if that was the case then songs of dead people would be public domain on their death. But happy birthday only became public domain within the past decade because the family kept forcing royalties
Congratulations on not reading my entire response, given the last line is literally "this doesn't mean you can start copying music on death, as they have a different copyright".
It's rather complex. First things first, there's a difference between published works by the individual and the likeness (image and voice) of an individual. As you said, works created by the individual are protected by copyright law for a long time and control usually transfers to their estate or next of kin after death.
As for the appearance and voice of an individual, it varies from state to state. About half of the states have a law about using someone's likeness after death and as such, 1/2
There are different levels of protection based on where the person was a resident of when they died (and where the group that wants to use their likeness is located).
But even within those laws, generally speaking they mostly protect against using someone's likeness to endorse a product or service they didn't agree to in life. Use of likeness for other "creative works" is not protected, so long as it passes the general 1st amendment rules about being transformative, parody/satire, etc.
""More than five decades after Gene brought Willy Wonka to life, people of all ages and backgrounds around the world continue to find joy, laughter and inspiration in his performance," Karen B. Wilder, Wilder's wife, said in a statement on behalf of the Gene Wilder Estate."
Maybe. Being charitable… maybe she feels this will help keep him in the public consciousness? Maybe they talked about this before he died? Even before AI studios were using CGI to try to put dead actors in new movies and such.
Maybe she’s just looking for a payout. I don’t know, so I’m not judging. People aren’t always just greedy bastards.
She could. Maybe she has. Maybe you think that should be sufficient for the soulless bitch, but maybe she feels differently. Maybe her motive was just the money. Unless you've walked in her shoes, you can't know what her motive was, and neither can I. Just saying money isn't the only motive out there. Be kind.
no, it's not. But if you've ever lost someone you loved, you'd know that sometimes you make decisions that aren't rational on a mental level, but they make sense on an emotional one. I can't know for sure what motivated her, but...leave room for kindness. you probably don't know her motives any more than I do.

Is this a real game show? A series about a fake game show? And if they really are using his voice, absolutely gross

AI really is the final piece of the puzzle to make sure we just drown in soulless reboots and nostalgia forever.
