Weird!

Gotta say, the saying is only for the ee around and not the ay sound, and the quote goes on to say except after c. Reread it knowing that!

Weird was actually corrected to wierd in the Webster's dictionary. Either way seems fine tbh. Professor's don't seem to give 2 shits.

Except when sounding like "A" as in neighbor or weigh

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It only applies to long "E" phonemes, you pedantic twats.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Bogus. Remove neighbor, eight, beige, sleigh, weightlifter & receive. Foreign words (like foreign) of course don't follow the rule.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The whole thing is "i" before "e" except after "c" and in words that go "ay" like in "neighbor" and "weigh"

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I before e except after c and e before n in chicken.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Hate it when people type wierd instead of weird even after being corrected. (Idc for strangers tho.)

English doesn't so much borrow from other languages as follow them down dark alleys and go through their pockets for loose grammar.

"... English has pursued other languages down alleyways to beat them unconscious and rifle their pockets for new vocabulary. -- James Nicoll

Was that an Eddie Izzard bit? I've heard that in a comedy routine before...

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Dunno where I picked it up. Been using it for years. The other one I like is "English is the result of French soldiers trying to date 1/2

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

2/2 German barmaid, and is no more legitimate than any of the other results thereof."

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

isnt this a thing where the "rule" is actually the exception?

8 years ago | Likes 226 Dislikes 2

Literally yes. QI did a thing about it. There are more exceptions in the dictionary.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Basically anything we got from German breaks the "I before E" rule, whereas anything we got from the various Romance Languages follows it.

8 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

English is a pidgin language where the idea of a concrete rule set is pointless. You have to know words on a symbolic basis.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Yes

Yeis

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Rules are more like guidelines anyway

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

https://youtu.be/duqlZXiIZqA definitely relevant.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It may be that it's the exception in terms of number of words, but when you weight by frequency of usage, it works.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

No it’s the opposite

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

The full saying that I have heard was "I before E, except after C, or when sounding as 'a', as in 'neighbor' or 'weigh'". This accounts »

8 years ago | Likes 81 Dislikes 2

Doesn’t work for weird, though

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

for *most* of the words here, except for Keith (which is a name), feisty (which is odd, considering how "fie" is spelled), and caffeinated.

8 years ago | Likes 54 Dislikes 2

It makes me happy that feisty is feisty to spell.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Rules were made to be broken: gramerians probably.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

And weird.

8 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

Seize the weird one.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Ew I never realized caffeinated was spelled like that v
