This is Sophie.
For years I have been trying to get my landlord to let me have a cat.
He always said "blow it out your ass".
This week I finally had enough, so I did what any smart man would do... I sent my wife to ask him.
Well sure as shit, we are getting a cat.
So like responsible adults we went to our local humane society (which is suspiciously expensive I discovered) but sadly (and happily) we fell in love with this girl. I will certainly question thier pricing but I'll pay it just to have this girl home with us.
She picked us, I walked by her and gave her a quick scritch on the head (because the wife was kind of set on another cat), darling Sofie let out the most ridiculous noise ... I stopped and laughed ...
I asked the volunteer "what the hell was that" to which she responded "ya, it freaks people out".
So I leaned in real close to Sofie and said "make the noise again"...
She raised an eyebrow and went "mlewmp".
I burst into laughter, the cat gave me a headbutt and said "mlewmp"
I immediately called my wife over and told her we found our cat.
The cat looked her in the eye and made the noise... Laugher erupted and she agreed that we found our cat.
This sweetie has found her forever home.
More pics to come as soon as we are approved for adoption.

I adopted my cat Kinsley this just past April. She's my best buddie, and I can't think of my life without her.

Following you for ricidulous cat noises!
VanceatronBay
My oldest cat picked me, in a similar way. Congrats! Favoriting for cute kitty updates :D

Love the cat! I love getting pets from shelters, but then I get sad because I think of the pets I couldn't take from the shelter.

Congratulations @OP. She looks just like my girl I lost after 20 happy years together a few months ago. Love her dearly.

One reason shelters have a big upfront payment is to deter assholes from adopting one and abandoning it the next day. It's the commitment.
trogdorrulez
I seriously think you got the reincarnation of my cat. Noises and all
TheGreatSheep
That looks suspiciously like my cat... it stopped me in my tracks.

I've had this post open for a week. OP delivers. <3
ender00000
One of my cats rarely meows, but makes all kinds of different noises instead; one of them sounds like she's being tortured badly, but it …
ender00000
…just means she's carrying something in her mouth. Freaked me out a few times, because she normally only does it when noone's near.
assntitties
As for the pricing and it seeming made up on the spot: a lot of rescues charge differently for kittens/puppies vs adults vs seniors. 1/2
assntitties
Prices drop as they get older. So that may be why it seemed weird to you. Source: family owns a rescue.

It took you years to think to send your wife?
QuintViskup
It took years for my wife to grow enough cahones to ask him
retardwrangler
Your cat might not have cost them much but another needed $5000 surgery, adoption fees spread the costs around so they can keep running.
ComradeQuestionx
Shes adorable. Need more pics please.

THATS WHAT MY CAT LOOKS LIKE
ulnek
I think they raise their prices depending on how many animals they are keeping so they can keep up with the expenses. Maybe.
Phullonrapist
Adoption fees cover a lot more than what you are paying for. Just means you are getting an animal that is all up to date medically and such
QuintViskup
Agreed so it's worth it to me ... I just wish the response had been more concrete rather than wishy washy
Phullonrapist
To be fair, I also think there is a "can you actually afford an animal" situation that goes on.
QuintViskup
Also they seemed to base it on her age which I thought was a weird thing ... She's four ... Umm $220? Ya $220
ImaginationJuice
Over here younger ones are more expensive than older ones, simply because everybody wants a kitten so they sell older ones cheaper
QuintViskup
They outright ask that which is smart. Price wasn't the weird part it was the number pulled from thin air which seemed odd

My cat's name is Sophie, too! and she's also a gray tabby!

Yes! More pics and a video! I bet she was tired of being at the shelter.

Grey kitties are really ridiculously weird and amazing. (Source: human slave to a grey murderfloof.) Congrats on the kit!

I paid $250 to adopt my dog... the rescue has lots of expenses, the fees are what covers some of it but not all.
Shiron14
The humane socitey, near me, is a non-profit so they live off of donations and adoptions
insaneinthemembrane001
Wow, I only paid 75 for my dog but this was also 10 years ago. Darn inflation but better than paying 2000 for a puppy mill dog.
OldIronsides
I paid $75 for my smaller one 4 years ago, and $30 for my large one the summer before last.
littlemorte
2/2 I paid $30 for a sheltie that was in animal control, he was so bad that I spent $5000 in vet bills that year. Sadly my ex kept him
littlemorte
My dog was a puppy mill breeder, the rescue also uses that money to go to secret auctions and buy animals from puppy mill breeders.
OldIronsides
But isn't that supporting the puppy mills?
littlemorte
They take away the stock they need, legally they can't just take them,so they go incognito (cause they're not welcome)& get the ones they can
OldIronsides
Interesting. I thought puppy mills were illegal.
littlemorte
2) so unless they have an agreement with the owners (like my dog) to not kill them when they don't give enough puppies, they can't do much
QuintViskup
And I agree. It's not an unreasonable amount but it seemed a bit arbitrary and a number pulled out of thin air .... No set rate so ...
littlemorte
How much was it?
LMeire
They do that so junkies don't grab their animals and resell them at a profit to animal testing labs.
QuintViskup
$220 which is OK but it was "ummm ... Hmmm $220?, Ya $220"
SJhook
Around here, grown cats are usually $75, but I've seen younger kitties go for $150 or $250. It depends on what all they need medically.
SJhook
I found my baby kitten, and by the time I got her shots and spayed, it was like $400 total. I don't think shelters make $$ on their rescues
Pupcakes
They definitely don't. My cat was found as a kitten and covered in mites, fleas and had worms. 3 vet trips and ~$1k later, but I love her
muffinburp
Sometimes you're paying for their spay/neuter and their food for their time. Sometimes that doesn't even cover their medical expenses. :)
muffinburp
But you made the right choice. Shelters are a better way to go
QuintViskup
I agree. She's so sweet I don't care how much she is to adopt
OldIronsides
At the shelter here cats are often free. When they are not I believe they are $50. Maybe $75. Dogs are normally $75. I got mine for $30
OldIronsides
They were having a special.
caralily
Yep. Mine was spayed, had a chip, shots up to date, but since she was an adult cat, she was free. I think the difference is city (1)
caralily
animal control paid by taxes vs. the charity shelters. (2)
