On one hand, you're absolutely right: this is argument by appeal to authority, and whether it's true has nothing to do with whether Will Ferrell or David Tennant or whoever believes it. OTOH, it's a message that more people need to hear, and people like Ferrell and Tennant have a broader reach, so having them boost the signal is still valuable. And people are, in reality, more susceptible to arguments by appeal to authority than I'd like.

That might certainly be part of it -and even the main hang up for some people. But in my experience I feel like for most homophobes the bigotry is less about being afraid of violence from gay people -sexual or otherwise- and more about a weird fear of "contagion". Like they're afraid gay people can turn them/other people gay or -especially in the case of diseases like AIDs- infect them with some kind of STD.

I don't know if I necessarily agree with that, at least not in that exact sense. It implies them knowing on some deeper level that what they do is bad, which I don't think they are capable of. *They* don't think they treat women poorly, they think they're treating women the way women are supposed to be treated.

For me he's on the 2 extremes: about 50% of what he's done make me wheeze from laughter (mostly SNL, but also quite a few of his movies) and the rest I find it disturbingly cringe, nothing in between, like I can't have a neutral reaction to his work. And of course, Stranger than fiction, which was a shockingly good, unique movie. Knowing that all these years he's never been an asshole to anyone tilts that balance to a positive summary.

I cannot blame you for not liking Elf. On paper it should not have been as good as it is. It's the writer's debut script, the plot of a human who was raised as an elf who finds out his father is on the naughty list and tries to come into his life after decades where his father wasn't even aware of who he was and convinces him Santa is real? It would be so easy to screw that up. But with a good cast and crew it became an instant Christmas classic

Take Adam Sandler. His comedy films are mostly awful. Though films like Punch Drunk Love and Uncut Gems really show off what great range he has, but that doesnt make me think Jack & Jill is any less terrible.
Will Farrell was great in SNL skits, and I'm sure a lovely fella, but I just can't sit through 2 hrs of what's essentially the same joke all throughout.
