Ugh. Watched the recent copaganda murder documentary on Netflix and the fact they continually showed Manhattan sideways running East x West made me so twitchy.
As I was finishing up a delivery to lower Manhattan and getting ready to leave, I once asked for directions to the 59th Street bridge, as I had read it on my map. No one knew what I was talking about. One person asked to see my map and immediately said "Oh that's the Queensboro" and showed me the best route to get there
I had that experience just the other day. I guess that name is losing favor, although it is immortalized in the Simon & Garfunkel song. One thing is for sure though: no one calls it by its official name, the Ed Koch.
This is how I troll my NYC friends, too! Was watching "The Wiz" recently, someone says, "Girl, you know you've never been south of 125th St!" I said, "Oh, so she's from Upstate New York."
Upper West Side, Harlem, Spanish Harlem, Columbia Heights, Washington Heights, Manhattanville, Manhattan Valley, Little Dominican Republic, Hudson Heights, Fort George, Inwood...
Nobody says Stuyvesant Town, it’s Stuy-Town. Pronounced “stye-town”. Also, Houston St is “house-tin”, Greenwich Village is “gren-itch”, and nobody says Avenue of the Americas, it’s just 6th Ave.

I went to school with Murray Hill.

Is hells kitchen fictional? That's always baffled me.
Madderrs
“Chelsea” is Hell’s Kitchen with more palatable PR branding
TheyDontKnowAndYouCantTellEm
I like how cops in tv shows and movies cross Manhattan to interview a witness in like zero time at all.

MyBackHurtz
What happens on Rosevelt Island? Ive never heard of it.
canIchangethislatermaybe
Nothing. Though there are some nice apartments with great views of the city.
And they have a bar!
One.
Nothing happens there. No one goes there.
Two decades in this city and I’ve known 1 person who used to live there.
I’ve been there once, in an Uber pool back in the before times, making a stop between Manhattan and Queens.

OP is roughly half right...the bottom half.

I was hoping to see the places to avoid Stella.

So where are the webbed up backpacks and science missions? that's what I want to know.

Screw all that! Show me where PoundTown and FlavourTown are at!
drduffer
Where’s the north half of the island, @OP? There’s rich history inside and outside of films there too, you know!
majorcovert
These are all the rich neighborhoods
Shmitty85
The problem is that requires two photos, and we all know Imgur servers would put the photo of the top half on the bottom.
popejubal
That’s upstate NY - i.e. anything above 125th st.

Harlem - isn't it? Black and Spanish history. Can't figure why they'd ever be left out.

This is the map that used to appear in yellow cabs—they didn’t go that far north, so they didn’t have it on the map. -.-

Namely a history of rich people gentrifying neighborhoods.
digginlife
The history of Manhattan is wild. It needs a different prefix than “gentri-“ in this case. Vilifying? Oppressifying?

I learned all these by playing Spider-Man video games like God intended, thank you very much.

The Western third or so of midtown. 8th Ave is the East border.

No Sesame Street? Or Hudson University?

"Are we a joke to you?" -everything north of 86th Street

Why is the west side missing? or is it not relevant?

Well they cut out Harlem too. So I guess they don't like a certain persons

In keeping with the cartographers of history, that is the 'there be dragons' region.

That's where the POCC live, so they didn't think it was worth mentioning.

ya know what ny needs. more tunnels for trains. i needs more trains

Republicans make such a big deal about how New York's mass transit is so dangerous and it's like "yeah because you fuckers stopped funding it."

Can you pull one?

if you give me a large enough leaver. Sure!

I propose a ramp with the little accelerator wheels to toss trains over the rivers. Call it the Yeetotron.
stygiansojourn
Do you take constructive criticism?
DoseOfScience
Fine. We'll add a receiving funnel to guide the trains back onto the rails.
Housemaster
No
onlyhalfghost
how about destructive criticism?
NinjablazerZero
I can assure you NYC has plenty of trains. Could it use a few more? Absolutely. But it is certainly not lacking in the train department.
swedeonamoose
Guessing it is like with Stockholm, needs more for areas outside the main city area.
NinjablazerZero
Yeah pretty much
DongleDingler
"More TUNNELS for trains" I assume they mean underwater, on and off of the island of Manhattan

Brooklyn

So this Stuyvesant guy had a whole town in Manhattan and his bed in Brooklyn? Good money in cigarettes, I suppose.
