The next time it’s ultimately raised, it should be permanently auto-indexed to inflation so that it keeps up with the cost of living automatically every year w/o needing new legislation—given that any shot we get at it is likely to be the only 1 for a while. Also note that the last time there was a (functional) Democratic federal trifecta was the 2009-2010 congressional session. Every year since there was at least one of: a Republican president, a Republican-majority Senate, a Republican-majority House, or a Senate with a *nominal* Democratic-majority but absolutely no margin, such that a single dissenting Blue Dog Democrat could and did sink any such attempt. Remember that a bill must pass the Senate, the House, AND the President to be enacted.

Bear in mind min wage does not apply to all jobs. Some jobs and industries are "exempt" from min wage, like waitering. They make 2.13 / hour.

Both people are wrong. It's worse than that. The minimum wage law was passed in 2007, and part of it didn't take effect until 2009. The last time Congress raised the minimum wage was 2007, also 2009 - 2026 is 17 years. 12 years of Democrat presidents with law passed no raise to minimum wage. 6 years of Republican presidents. Minimum wage is the lowest it's been in 75 years adjusted for inflation. I made a chart.

Key point your comment is missing, republicans are the ones that vote those down, it’s often the majority of the party voting in favour of things with a handful of turncoats. Democrats have problems, the issue with their policy record as shown by legiscan is that they’ve rarely had a house majority and even when they did mcconnel was house speaker who bragged about blocking dem bills from being voted on.

Republicans in Congress while there is and isn't a Democrat as President have the sole duty to downvote each and every single bill that Democrats bring in front of Congress. Usually if it’s for the good of the people it’s like 5 republicans voting in favour and when it’s generally bad for the people it’s like 16-30ish democrats.

Inflation tracks tens of thousands of items and weights the results to get inflation. Food only makes up about 9% of the inflation basket, but we've seen that rise by about 50% over the last 5 years, so its overall impact is lowered. Also worth remembering that the inflation number is how those things have changed over the last 12 months, so it compounds - 5% 2 years running means a total rise of 10.25%.

The problem is people have continuously misunderstood what the inflation calculation means and is for. It's only ever meant to be a broad idea of how prices have changed and the value of money. It should never be used to determine how much a company increases prices by (especially since most companies will have something that drives the number). It *should* have been the minimum companies look to give as a pay rise, a cost of living increase, as opposed to a performance increase.
