Congress? You mean those fucks bought and owned by Musk, Page, Zuck, Ellison, Theil, Koch, Bezos, and Satan? (Ha, just kidding. We know Lucifer has more class than that).
The next time it’s ultimately raised, it should be permanently auto-indexed to inflation so that it keeps up with the cost of living automatically every year w/o needing new legislation—given that any shot we get at it is likely to be the only 1 for a while. If SS payments have COLAs, then so should MW. It’s a no brainer, yet no one but Obama has publicly suggested it. I wonder why.
Also note that the last time there was a (functional) Democratic federal trifecta was the 2009-2010 congressional session. Every year since there was at least one of: a Republican president, a Republican-majority Senate, a Republican-majority House, or a Senate with a *nominal* Democratic-majority but absolutely no margin, such that a single dissenting Blue Dog Democrat could and did sink any such attempt. Remember that a bill must pass the Senate, the House, AND the President to be enacted.
An hours work for 6 cans of soda. I can't even imagine trying to live on min wage. They really want to guarantee a low birth rate in America don't they.
Just know a minimum wage earner would have to work “600” Forty hour work weeks to make the same amount of money as a Congressman. 11.5 years. And Mike Johnson has sent them on paid vacation. https://congressatwork.com/
I remember graduating college in 2012 and refusing to go back to call center jobs (where I was making 20ish an hour) and took a minimum wage job that was at least sorta related to my college degree.
Those at least are technically required to get the full 7.25 if you don't make it up in tips. Farm labor, summer camp councillors, and babysitters can make less.
The dinosaurs setting the rules haven't had to worry about money for decades and probably haven't set foot in a grocery store for as long, except for PR stunts.
I bet even if they raised it, it would be some kind of extremely minimal amount just to try and get people to stop complaining and feel better about themselves
No it shouldn't, that just makes the already shitty situation worse by inviting more bribery and/or making the wealth gap even worse by preventing anyone without fucktons of money to become a Congress person.
So your view is that congress is so corrupted that they would not raise minimum wage even if their personal income depended on it? That their kickbacks from big companies are so large that their official pay does not matter? Then I do not understand how this would prevent a lower income person from becoming a congressman. They would be receiving the corruption too.
its also a good day to read about the coal wars and battle of blair mountain. refresh everyones minds on why we are hurting and how much they dont care.
Yeah exactly. No need for minimum because of it. I'm My company elected luottamusmies (union rep) and työsuojeluvaltuutettu (work safety Authorized representative).
Both people are wrong. It's worse than that. The minimum wage law was passed in 2007, and part of it didn't take effect until 2009. The last time Congress raised the minimum wage was 2007, also 2009 - 2026 is 17 years. 12 years of Democrat presidents with law passed no raise to minimum wage. 6 years of Republican presidents. Minimum wage is the lowest it's been in 75 years adjusted for inflation. I made a chart.
Key point your comment is missing, republicans are the ones that vote those down, it’s often the majority of the party voting in favour of things with a handful of turncoats. Democrats have problems, the issue with their policy record as shown by legiscan is that they’ve rarely had a house majority and even when they did mcconnel was house speaker who bragged about blocking dem bills from being voted on.
Criticize them properly or nothing can get fixed because people don’t know what’s broken
Came here to say exactly this. Republicans in Congress while there is and isn't a Democrat as President have the sole duty to downvote each and every single bill that Democrats bring in front of Congress. Then they get to blame the Democrats for getting nothing done. Which is why we keep getting Republican presidents.
Likewise with a lot of the “bipartisan bill” headlines that’s used to obfuscate the party divide by making it seem like they’re working together. Usually if it’s for the good of the people it’s like 5 republicans voting in favour and when it’s generally bad for the people it’s like 16-30ish democrats.
Though sometimes dems by majority will vote for something ridiculous or questionably choose not to hold a bunch of traitors responsible for a failed coup by pretending the checks and balances work
Inflation tracks tens of thousands of items and weights the results to get inflation. Food only makes up about 9% of the inflation basket, but we've seen that rise by about 50% over the last 5 years, so its overall impact is lowered. Also worth remembering that the inflation number is how those things have changed over the last 12 months, so it compounds - 5% 2 years running means a total rise of 10.25%.
It's a pretty misleading basket when you consider what low income people primarily have to budget for, essentials and housing. Which have increased far above the nominal inflation rates.
The problem is people have continuously misunderstood what the inflation calculation means and is for. It's only ever meant to be a broad idea of how prices have changed and the value of money. It should never be used to determine how much a company increases prices by (especially since most companies will have something that drives the number). It *should* have been the minimum companies look to give as a pay rise, a cost of living increase, as opposed to a performance increase.

Wildest thing, in the Nordics, there is no general minimum wage at all! Just unions!

How many times have federal employees and SS recipients gotten raises in that time, and by how much?

Another post nearby points out that a 12 pack can of soda is like 12 dollars now. You are not even worth 6 cans of soda.

If they raise the minimum wage, it will take the 'food' out of the billionaires' wallets! /s

Bear in mind min wage does not apply to all jobs. Some jobs and industries are "exempt" from min wage, like waitering. They make 2.13 / hour.

Congress pay should depend on minimum wage... Like "A congressman gets X times the minimum wage per month". (And X cannot be changed).

Zero. Congress is constitutionally obligated to receive an annual cost of living raise. Every single year since 2009 they have voted to decline it.

Please, it can get lower.
And inflation feels inaccurate lately, with all the prices outstripping the percentile-numbers everywhere.

Yeah, I don’t think inflation tracking practical things like food correctly.
