Imagine all this behaviour compared to wearing a mask.

Why not have grace and dignity by taking the ever present risk of death in stride?

I've had many blackouts in Massachusetts... mostly at UMASS Lowell. RUSH SIG TAU

Obviously this was worse, but humanity is better at coping with difficult times together rather than separated as covid regulations require

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I thought it was for electrical blackouts not war time blackout drills. I was reading the homeowner one in confusion before I figured it out

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Honestly everyone, I don't see what all the fuss is about. I blackout all the time and I've only caused a few interruptions of power.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's December 1942. USA has been at war for an entire year! Worst year of my life! Why can't we pretend it's over and go back to our lives?

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

People who didn't follow these guidelines faces a rather dramatic demonstration as to thier importance

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

My Great Grandad was a warden, he'd go around making sure there was no light peeking through windows. 1/

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Then he'd watch the sky light up as the nearby city got bombed. 2/2

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I thought this was from England during the Blitz. But it says Massachusetts? What were they preparing for, war with the Russians?

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Complete success! There was not a single successful bombing raid on Massachusetts during the war.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Unless you were republic of Ireland and left the lights on to guide the German bombers...

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

*Original UNUSED 1939 poster, only to be brought out when the Germans had a land invasion going

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I’d probably take my city being bombed a little more serious than Covid tbh

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

And there you have it, folks. How many died from bombings in the U.S. during WW2. Covid numbers will exceed all US ETO casualties soon.

5 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Keep calm and carry on was never actually published because ministers thought it was too pandering

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Why did Massachusets need a blackout?

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The entire reason they have police enforcement of blackouts listed there is that people *didn't* obey these rules. It was always this bad.

5 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

The original keep calm poster was amazing and now every uses bastardizations of it, not even realizing its history. I have a lot of feelings

5 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

About it.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

"Listen here Tom, that pint better be here when I get back, else I'm telling Marjorie what you did to her summer dress"

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The first poster is Massachusetts.

5 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 3

says so right on the poster.

5 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

It was ignored and resisted in the US. We lost a lot of ships on the east coast.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

"Cross streets at intersections", does anybody know why?

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Maybe because people were driving on the roads without using headlights? So motorists were to take more care at intersections?

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That might be the reason, sounds smart. Thank you!

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

As someone from that place. Wtf?

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

the east coast would blackout because the lights from the cities silhouetted ships against the coast for German U-Boats.

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Apparently they kept it going after the war as a way to make people feel more patriotic for participating in them.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

America didn't initially blackout the eastern seaboard on entering the war, though ships did run dark, this meant when the uboat fleet 1/2

5 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

2/2 arrived, they had clear shots against silhouetted ships running along the coast at night.

Thought it was talking about electrical blackouts that happen during storms till I saw "don't give them a target" oof scary times

5 years ago | Likes 52 Dislikes 0

I thought it was aliens until I saw keep calm carry on

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Same, I was like why don't they want light to show and then oooooh now I get it

5 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

I thought it was some satire against darkness or something.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I hope none of you experienced this. It was really scary, the entire country went into blackout and then the sirens started, and the bombs hit

5 years ago | Likes 176 Dislikes 0

As a child in Germany, my MiL remembers the 1st Americans she ever saw. 6 of them came to her tiny town & gave her the 1st chocolate of her

5 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 0

life. She was so happy & thought the war was over. Within hours, air-raid sirens. When she came out of the cellar, all 6 GIs were dead. She

5 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 0

helped plant flowers after the town buried them. A line of blue & yellow flowers. At 85, she talks about those boys all the time now.

5 years ago | Likes 25 Dislikes 0

Any particular reason for blue and yellow?

5 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Catholic church. Blue symbolizes Mary and conveys fidelity & aspiration. Yellow symbolizes the presence of God and conveys renewal & hope.

5 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

Experienced similar during Iraq war, I live in Israel. We had rooms sealed off Incase of gas attack. Sirens all hours of the day, then for

5 years ago | Likes 33 Dislikes 0

every siren, a missile dropping. Booom. I was 7yo.

5 years ago | Likes 27 Dislikes 0

Oh yeah and we had to sit with gas masks on, while waiting for the boom.

5 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 0

I'm sorry you had to experience that friend :(

5 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Could be worse, I do not envy our neighbors to the south :/

5 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

My grandma was in London and gave birth to my mom in 1944 and said that men did awful things to women in the poorly lit, tubes during raids.

5 years ago | Likes 119 Dislikes 2

Yes,unfortunately many nasty things can and will happen in those circumstances.I was lucky, the shelter was for my family and neighbours.

5 years ago | Likes 68 Dislikes 0

Sometimes it was a joint decision.

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 78

True, but it didn't need to be said.

5 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 9

So the woman decided to be violently sexually assaulted? Odd.

5 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 1

They were talking about rape not consensual sex you dumb bastard. God damnit quit being a fucking mouth breather jackass.

5 years ago | Likes 35 Dislikes 1

I probably know a hell of a lot about ww2 than you you moron. Certainly some rapes occurred in the tubes but also consensual sex.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 31

You're quite literally the dumbest fucking person I've encountered on this website and thats saying something

5 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Im sorry, where did it say otherwise? Maybe if you actually knew how to read this conversation wouldnt have happened.

5 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 1

Yea, and specifically they're talking about the rape that most definitely occurred, while you're trying to delegitimize that. Learn2read. ;)

My grandmother was the civil defense officer in her neighborhood during WW2. Her job was to enforce the rules and they gave her a special>

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

5 years ago | Likes 30 Dislikes 0

> instead to keep people connected with the war effort. Please note I am not drawing a direct parallel with face masks.

5 years ago | Likes 28 Dislikes 0

I'd love to see mask wardens armed with a cattle prod.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Do you have the hat or any photos? Would love to see it.

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

#1 is why the old warner brothers cartoons had someone shout 'Put out that light!' when characters would strike a match.

5 years ago | Likes 107 Dislikes 0

I thought it was because they were trying to sleep...

5 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Cities did blackouts in the US so uboats couldn't see ships leaving port at night via silhouettes, ...

5 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

And in Europe so bombers couldn't tell where they were during nighttime missions.

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I meant in the cartoons.

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I never got that as a kid.

5 years ago | Likes 30 Dislikes 0

Shit, I didn't get that until just now

5 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Well my parents lived through it so they could explain it to me. Some people on this site are old AF.

5 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 0

And some just know about history.

5 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

To be fair there were protests against the blackouts in the UK

5 years ago | Likes 445 Dislikes 0

Probably also incited by the Daily Mail (who would've wanted to be directing Nazi bombs in - we should never forget that)

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I’ll be honest. I don’t even remember any of my blackouts.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

And against masks during the “Spanish” Flu

5 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Thank you for those quote marks.

The Germans called those targets.

Bob forever

5 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

And the "Keep Calm" poster wasn't actually distributed before this millennium.

5 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

It was ready to go if there'd been an invasion though.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It was a saying during ww2 in britian though, it just hadn't been commercialised

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Were they protesting that Nazis are fake and more people die to season influenza than Nazi bombs?

5 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

There were. But it's hard to deny the need when your house explodes.

5 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

That's exactly it, it wasn't *their* house that exploded, but someone else's, and who cares about someone else. Just like now.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

No they were saying that it was an unfair restriction of their freedoms

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

No, I'm just saying that unlike today with Fovid deniers, it would be hard for someone to deny there was a need for blackouts once a (1

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

- bomb drops on your house.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Ironic, given that the UK got bombed a hell of a lot more than Massachusetts ever did.

5 years ago | Likes 35 Dislikes 2

Well, if they'd have known about the NE Patriots, they might have pre-emptively bombed Massachusetts...

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Over 10,000 covid deaths in Massachusetts, and counting.

5 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

Blackouts in the US were to prevent U-boats easily tracking merchant ships leaving harbour and grouping up along the north-east coast.

5 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

I'm not sure smoking a cig in Springfield would have been a problem.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Blackouts in Massachusetts?

5 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

The police shot them.

5 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

And the lights all went out in Massachusetts

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

cold war lasted decades broseph.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I have lived in mass my whole life never heard of this.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

when were you born?

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Not during ww2 lol 87

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

US Office of Civilian Defense organized blackout drills in most major cities during WW2.

5 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

There were also collaborators.

5 years ago | Likes 207 Dislikes 2

First pilot shot down in the Battle of Britain was a Mosleyite

5 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

A what?

5 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

"A supporter of Oswald Moseley, English politician and founder of the British Union of Fascists."

5 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Mosleyite (plural Mosleyites) A supporter of Oswald Mosley (1896–1980), English politician and founder of the British Union of Fascists.

5 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

Implying that the people protesting against masks are... collaborating with Covid.

5 years ago | Likes 104 Dislikes 1

Covid is a sentient scumbag confirmed

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

No, just hosting it, spreading it, helping it hurt and kill more people. Wait...

5 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

They may as bloody well be.

5 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Technically not, as collaboration requires consciousness from covid. But there are people purposely spreading it.

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It's not a very far fetched concept that a lot of the anti mask propaganda online could be made by foreign powers to kill westerners.

5 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

Why just Westerners.... look at India and Brazil covid counts... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Potential_superpowers

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I distinctly recall rich people getting richer because of the effects Covid has had on society, so........... Yeah, collaborators.

5 years ago | Likes 69 Dislikes 0

Even when they're getting rich specifically because our lockdown measures funnel all business through online sellers/corporate box stores?

5 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 2

Because I really don't see how to do a lockdown WITHOUT it massively benefiting, say, Amazon and Wal-Mart. We shut down their competition.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Tell that to the Tyson people.
