Deer in the headlights? Deer IS the headlights.

How do we say " Expecto Patronum" in Finish ?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

so someone's job is to go around looking for reindeers and spraying their antlers?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Thought this was fake news but, whaddya know http://www.bbc.com/news/blogs-news-from-elsewhere-26244339

"They took our jobs" - Rudolph, probably...

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Instead of trying to modify deer, you should teach drivers not to hit animals.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Seeing them helps in not hitting them.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

You see that picture? It's taken in Lapland in december, 2pm.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Everybody is drunk 24/7 in Lapland so bright lights are the best way to make them stand out.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Drink a bit of Valhalla liquor and then stare at these

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I mean, it's not gonna add a whole lot of warning time if it's truly reflective (not glow). I guess you die of the heart attack from *c*

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

*c* sudden ghost deer rather than the crash, though, so there's that...

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

We usually have our headlights on, and some extra lights too, so a good half mile or so...

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

If the headlights are illuminating the reflectiveness, they're illuminating the deer they're attached to too. Perhaps minutely, but *c*

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

*c* still. Also doesn't provide much if any help for areas with brush or cover (that deers tend to prefer).

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I didn't expecto that.

+1 now get the fuck out!

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I would like to read your username/book.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Me too! Maybe with some spare time I will start writing and drawing.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Expecto when you least expecto.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Maybe a dumb question but that won't effect them in the wild right? Like from predators or mating and such

9 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

-Only if the predator got mounted a flashlight on its forehead, but then it will probably just scare itself to death.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

This is done to domestic reindeer, not wild animals. Scandinavian reindeer are kind of like cows, all domesticated and owned by someone.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

What do they own reindeer for? For meat production?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The pelts and the antlers can also be sold, but the meat is the main product. Some make souveniers from the bones too.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yes, excellent meat

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

He said more than his +1. So the answer to your question is no.

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

That was pretty good

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You deserve number 1 and number 2.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Raindeer roadkill in Finland is like squirrel roadkill everywhere else.

9 years ago | Likes 28 Dislikes 0

They have very small raindeer.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Or regular deer in Wisconsin

9 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Good eats?

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Ya but high in cholesterol.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

How about not letting them drive? Fucking geniuses.

9 years ago | Likes 1482 Dislikes 6

They should just move the deer crossing signs somewhere else without traffic.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

We don't, but they can get very aggressive when drunk! And the bastards always find the keys!

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That's some Ken M level shut right there

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

9 years ago | Likes 112 Dislikes 2

Or they could even move the deer crossing signs to areas with less traffic.

the shutter speed of the camera matches the rotation frequency of the helicopter blades

If anyone's curious, the camera's framerate is matching the aircraft prop's rotations per second.

In other news predotors are killing reindeer at an alarming rate!

9 years ago | Likes 260 Dislikes 17

Also, we have maybe 2 or 3 bears and roughly around 9 wolves in Finland. Lets hope those few don't carry flashlights.

9 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

Only the ones with built in headlights.

9 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 0

Like sharks with frickin’ lasers on their heads.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

These look like domesticated reindeer

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 2

I did not know domesticated raindeer were a thing.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yes, they're awesome and small

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Reindeer are ONLY domesticated. They run in free herds but they're a domestic species. The wild ones are Caribou.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Huh. Interesting

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Predators will only see it if they are the light source. Retroreflective paint only sends the light back within a few degrees of the source.

9 years ago | Likes 101 Dislikes 1

It is little glass beads, like they use on road stripes in the US. Put the paint on, then sprinkle the beads. You can use clear paint.

9 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 1

You still see a saftervest under moonlight

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Retroreflector It is little glass beads embedded in the paint, creating spherical retroreflectors.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

That is just a reflective vest, not a retroreflective vest. There is a difference. Retroreflectors only send the light back within 1/2

9 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

2/2 A degree or two of the light source.

9 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Actually predators would be jarred by the light due to their night vision sensitivity and fear of lights/fire.

9 years ago | Likes 110 Dislikes 5

This is a retroreflective coating that returns light to the source. The predators wouldn't be able to see them. Not without flashlights.

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

(Moonlight or other natural sources would get bounced back towards the sky)

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Interesting. Thanks for the information.

A buck grows antlers due to testosterone during rut. During the summer after rut, the antlers fall off because of lower testosterone.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

They do. However, they're all gathered up by their owners before the winter because it's harder to find food in the winter. (1)

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

So I think they get repainted while they are in their winter habitats. Also, not all reindeer are painted like that yet.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Do their owners eat antlers during the winter?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yes it increases sexual proficiency.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

But they turn the antlers into powder first

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Don't tell him.
