This is Shawn. Shawn and I were married from 2014-2020. He was an amazing father to our daughter, and an even more amazing Papa Bear to my two older daughters.

Shawn was so kind. He was the kindest, most gentle, most generous man I had ever met. I had to marry him.

I loved doing life with him, but ultimately we were better together as friends than as spouses. He LOVED being a father.

On January 30 he had a major stroke and went to the hospital. Overnight he had a second major stroke that put him in a coma. The neurologist was not sure if or when he would come to, but let us know his life on the other side of this coma was extremely poor quality. He would be blind, have paralysis in his limbs, may not know who we are, would need a feeding tube, and be kept in a nursing home indefinitely. His mother made the hard choice to bring hospice in after he spent 2 weeks in a coma.

I want to remember him as the father he was. He was so loving and so proud of his daughters. He loved his family and friends with all his heart. I'm so proud to have known him and shared 8 years of my life with him. I love you, Shawn Paul.

He has a kind face.

For your kids consider writing down the little things he did, especially for them. I'm so sorry they won't have him.

1/2 My mom had the not-quite-but-almost-kill-you stroke. 3 days in hospice and she saw her way out. Everyone got to say bye.

2/2 It's a sucky way to lose someone you love but they're not lingering forever in no-persons land. Use your time to say goodbye.

1) I transport a LOT of stroke patients. Like, an *aggressive* number of people who've had strokes. It's pretty routine for me at this...

2) point, and I've learned to stay compassionate while also staying detached from the honestly quite massive volume of suffering and misery

3) that I encounter in the course of my job. But every so often, it's good to be reminded that, behind every one of these devastated people

4) that I work with, most of whom cannot communicate with me in any way, there's a story, usually like this one. Just as it's important to

5) not let the sadness of the job get to you, it's also important to maintain perspective, and not forget what the work means to people.

I'm so sorry OP. Truly hope you and your family find some comfort in the coming weeks

My husband chose that time to leave me for someone else in another state. Our girls were grown but they were devastated, too. 8 yrs later->

he dies of metastatic lung cancer. I was surprised (& pissed off at myself) for the level of grief I experienced. I couldn't figure it out->

Sorry for your loss. Follow up, you friend-zoned your husband?!

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Actually, he friend-zoned me. I am definitely the one who lost out.

My brother died in exactly the same way seven years ago. A stroke left him partially disabled for a year, then a stronger one did him in.

The whole ordeal broke my mother and she was never the same after that. I'm so very sorry for what you're going through.
