Wonder of there is a short barrelled version called the Napoleon...

I got word that some American Tanks migrate to Europe this time of year.
prodmerc
It's that time in their life where their color changes from desert brown back into the original forest green
EasyNarwhal
We should send some Archers and see which one kills more war criminals, a friendly conpetition ????
isthisusernametakenquestionmark
Scary piece of kit. Does looks like high maintenance tho.
Beiki
France has one of if not the largest military in Europe.
CapitalNick
I like the 2 loading rails. One for the boom. One for the zoom.

The whole free world: "Slava Ukraine!" Also the whole free world: "let's see how this shit does in real combat conditions"
SBFR
This shit has already been used in combat conditions, in Irak.
Shoutrr
this "shit" has seen a lot of real combat conditions already

"This shit was made to blow up Russians, here ya go"
alexcoldt
The goal is, with automated systems like this training to USE it is minimal, and if it breaks down and needs maintenance Ukraine can just-
prodmerc
I mean, it's artillery not a fighter jet...
alexcoldt
ship is back. This gets materiel on the battlefield MUCH faster.

The Deutschbags backed out of sending them PzH-2000s, so France and the Netherlands are sending their arty.

Germans are more concerned about losing Russian gas

Bundestag is. The German people are mad at their politicians for being such limp dicks.

What are the two things being loaded? A round and a charge?
tinyCabbage
A round and a charge
jaggcomputing5
Brioche and fromage.
MadCat221
Yep. Variable yield charges means variable range.
xXxSTEVOxXx
Oooooh! Interesting!! I wonder if the unit packs the charges or what... what a cool system.
Greyeyes1973
No the charges are like the ones used in old battleship guns. It comes ready to load
xXxSTEVOxXx
Neat! So basically they get a resupplied with a different set of ranges of charges based on their mission?
Greyeyes1973
You adjust the range by how many bags you load. More bags longer range
Asteroidrules
And separate warheads means different payload types.
xXxSTEVOxXx
Ahhh that's so fascinating!! Wow modern weapons systems are so advanced. Scary shit man...
pritolus
I think this is how most artillery has always worked. Another benefit to the bag is it burns up, no brass to eject. Brass would be heavy too
myotheralt
Ok, but why did the round have a loader arm, but the charge had two guys to place it in ready-next?
SupportGeek
Round is way heavier
Wolfshead009
Also keeps the weight to what a person can carry. A one piece round would be too heavy for practical loading.
ClawsOfTheWolf
Halfdiver
Norwegian artillery?

Incoming!
DrGrue
Okay, but can France keep one of these pointed at Marine Le Pen at all times "just in case"?
Harm
We would gladly put her in place of a payload to send her back to Putin.
Icecoldfunk
Unless Marine La Pen wins, then the French will give Ukraine fuck all and may yet provide arms to Russia.

MeestowKitty
Rub it in, living in a country where your vote actually counts, and your leader has to actually get enough of it to win.
SuperDramaticFusion
Truly a frightening possibility for the French.
BallsackHippo
I have a feeling the French people would storm L'Élysée if such thing would happen. The French people have a visceral hate for collaborators
PrivateDuds
Meanwhile Germany's like "no, daddy Pootin said we mustn't."
Panzerkeks85
Scholz is the only one stepping on the brake. The rest of the government is more than eager to send heavy stuff.
PrivateDuds
Not to mention the president who is basically Putin's buddy and several SPD politicians as well as Schröder who still has power fs reason.
PrivateDuds
In Germany it's always only the people with actual power stepping on the breaks when it comes to Russia.
PrincessLeliana
It's all self motorised like something out of scifi
DickMercenary
Everything except for getting the shells out of the box. Still one poor bastard that has to do that while everyone else watches.
swedeonamoose
And the Caesar look pretty oldschool compared to the Archer, sadly the Archer does not exist in numbers where they can be given away.
Kitehammer
Yeah doesn't it seem a bit of an over-engineered of a way to move the shell a few meters before firing?
Givemethegoo
The value of advance military technology is in allowing anybody with minimal training to use it
SegyeJibae
that's the 2nd gen 8x8 version, the 6x6 version has semi auto load. no info which version is sent to Ukraine, but they're getting 12 of them

That's a nice gift nonetheless

I am concerned about mechanical failures...
DavidBrooker
This will be the ninth war this gun has participated in. Its reliability has been well established.
Cronos51101
I'm also guessing you could hand load it if needed.
circlebreaker
My first thought too. It would be a ridiculous oversight for combat equipment to be built w/o manual backups to complex electronic systems.
Everfearful
The mechanical/hydraulic system isn't anything groundbreaking. Looks no more complex than your average forklift.
circlebreaker
I wonder if it makes the same beep when backing up?
Everfearful
Only if the driver isn't wearing their reflective safety belt like the SgtMaj ordered.

yeah, that's almost a case of "lets try to find a meaning to this cool acronym i've found

Almost 100% of acro we use in France in police or military works that way, MINOTAURE, ORION or even CHEOPS are acronyms for informatic stuff

I've seen a gun line set up, pop rounds, tear down, and move faster than this with slightly less chance of failure.

The men are handling both the rounds and charges. I would think it could be loaded manually.

They are sending both CAESAR artillery and MILAN anti-tank missiles
Asteroidrules
It's short for CAmion Équipé d'un Système d'ARtillerie, truck equipped with system of artillery.
SalmonTheWise
Won.
PrivateDuds
Those were the Gauls, who were Celtic tribes, current French are descended from Frankic Germanic tribes is my understanding.
vladrichdemaclant
They are a colorful mix of celts, romans, germanic tribes and many more cultures and people. Much like the Swiss, the Austrians and Italians
[deleted]
[deleted]
HunglikeaHamster
Germanic tribes were NOT celts. Know your history..
ClawsOfTheWolf
I hope Sweden sends the Archer system. Don't even need to leave the truck to fire -
HansImaginationStar
How does the targeting work?
prodmerc
Holy shit, a few of these would literally rain hell
o0scottyboy0o
Put's tank into siege mode. Identify Target. Proooceeding.

That is astoundingly quick.

Ah yes, MRSI (Multiple Rounds, Simultaneous Impact) firing pattern. Ironically named, as is offers none.
Lambavelo
that what did the AMX auf1 from the late 70's : 8 rounds/60sec or 6 rounds/45 sec
TsubakiTragic
I minute of fight time per round... holy fucking dooley how far they shooting?... putin better keep his head down.
RicheTheBuddha
Wow, impressive. I'm guessing not very good for off road, but does that even matter much these days?
IAmGORT
Impressive

You should see the rate of fire of Swedens old artillery, the Bandkanon: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uOCDZCdrZ7s
ClawsOfTheWolf
Multiple trucks can sync their guns with each other and change barrel angle, so all their rounds will land within seconds of each other
Soggybathroomsock
Fuck, that's terrifying. You'd essentially be hit from a spot that'd already be empty by the time you knew you were being shot at.
eggmuffin
Sweden has built its army around hit & run tactics. Even their tanks are built for it.
Filanwizard
ultimate shoot and scoot.
tlamstrike
That's the only way to survive against Western counter battery capabilities. A few years back there was an incident in South Korea...
tlamstrike
...where the ROK counter battery rounds were already landing before the DPRK rockets that provoked them had.
0n1yl3773r5and1234567890
That's what I call "rapid reaction"!!
executivedisfunction
No. Defensive radar locates the source of fire as soon as a round rises above the ground clutter in it's scan. Why you need anti-radar too.
ClawsOfTheWolf
Swedish defence have for a long time been based on hit and run/guerilla tactics, so this fits well with that style.
Northeneer
Assaulting Sweden can backfire severely, trust me. In store we have some really nasty surprises for the home countries of uninvited visitors
ClawsOfTheWolf
Like our supply of Surströmming.
Xariarra
Should be included with every artillery round! Then again, that might be seen as chemical warfare oO
VesperWombat
That would be a war crime.
