Honestly it's one of the few crimes I'm in favour of capital punishment for. It's incurable and they are highly likely to reoffend. The risk to society by releasing them is too high imo.

I understand what your saying, that it focuses too much on how achievement of being a doctor. But the title made it easy to figure out who it was without reading the article since he used his position as a doctor to commit the crimes he was convicted of.

People have been stabbed for less. It shines a light on the problems of the prison system. As well, some pedos might read this story and think twice about hurting kids. I couldn’t think of a better person that gets to be made an example of, and highlight these two flaws in our system. Personally, I think the sentence wasn’t enough, and apparently some people agree. It's not hard to see why if you know anything about what he did and how long he got away with it. I'm not saying I condone prison violence but I can certainly understand why people are reacting this way in this specific situation.

Sure, revenge/torture/etc feels good on the surface, especially for someone as heinous as Nassar, but it's a really terrible thing to be accepted in a justice system. It leaves prison guards and inmates with the power to determine who deserves it - and that should scare anyone who cares about prisons being used for rehabilitation, or at the very least not actively working against it.

Oh I agree totally. I find it incredibly disturbing that people frequently cheer for prison rape in particular and its considered a de facto punishment for violent crimes. I'm just saying I get why no one gives a fuck when shit like this happens to someone like him. The guy's an absolute monster.

I don't like prison violence, and I also don't like Larry Nassar -- AND I don't like that so many of the people who love the idea of *some* people getting hurt in prison are the same type of people who think (formerly) respected white dudes like Nassar should not have their life ruined for just a few hundred incidents of sexual abuse. I suspect the knowledge that the system is *usually* overly nice to people like him and brutal to other folks is why you see some of the "meh" responses here.

You can't rehabilitate a child molester, they will get out and probably do it again. Child molesters should be put down instead of giving them the chance to continue to destroy children's lives. It would be a better fate than what happens to them in prison at least. I'm a fan of their prison punishment though.

When you open the door to extra-judicial punishments and torture, you lose the ability to control who that happens to. When advocating for a basic human right (not being tortured in prison for example), unfortunately it usually means defending that right for really shitty people, because that's where it's first neglected.

Until their rate of reoffence is 0, they should not be released. A woman I used to live near was forced back into her home while she was on her way to her car by a rapist that had just been released on "good behavior", where he then assaulted her until she died. Fully rehabilitated or life in prison. My assaulter walks free too, to this day, and he even reoffended. I don't know why they let him out again. I'll never know.

Ive been watching some ex-con on youtube about his time in a few prisons. The guards typically will give inmates info if someone did a crime against Women/Children, and even go so far as to open up cells at night to facilitate the violence.

A criminal law professor of mine did a study of prisoners in NY and found there’s a hierarchy. Child molesters and abusers were at the bottom and hated by everyone above.

Yup, many of the people in prison came from broken homes and were victims of sexual abuse or had siblings that were victims. Prison sucks to begin with and child abusers have is worse.

It is highly likely that your ex saw a larger population of child abusers at his correction facility because of the nature of the others. Housing them with nonviolent offenders for say drug possession or money crimes would be safer than housing them with murderers. Despite the nature of incarceration and living conditions often being abysmal they still have an obligation to keep you as safe as possible.

The American penal system is like all things American a for profit business. Maximum numbers of prisoners and minimal numbers of guards. Also the pay for those guards is as low as it can possibly be with enough to get some to apply for the position. Thus the inmates end up running the prison.

Just to be clear - only about 8% of the prisons in the US are private. That's still far too many, and the public ones certainly have their own issues (like this), but 92% of prisons aren't businesses being run for profit.

I would just add: 1) A prison can be state-run and still make money off the prisoners by allowing businesses to contract for prison labor. 2) A prison can be state-run and still be run as bottom-line focused as if it were a for-profit business, especially in Republican-controlled states.
