I'm used to his text being at the top of my messages, I was tired and just clicked the top message and texted away. Yikes.

Edit: A couple of you have told me I can pin text conversations to the top. Thanks so much, I didn't know I could do that.

Plot twist: @OP lives alone.

Follow it up with a query (to everyone) - "Straw Poll - should I stay on the Anti-psychotics or go without for the next family gathering?"

it's okay man, you sent it to us last week instead of the grocery list

i was wondering why i got a text asking for refills of bread, milk, and eggs

2 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Nah. Insane is "Don't bring those pills near me they're the work of the Devil!" "Please bring me my pills," is "I have an illness and I'm dealing with it in a healthy way."

I once texted a whole group chat that I had MS....didn't tell any single person on the vacation we were on before that. Also turned out to be a false diagnosis...if that makes you feel better lol

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Boo, we're all fucking insain. At least you're medicated

Well, if you take your medicine, you're no longer insane, right? Much like when I take high blood pressure medication it lowers my blood pressure. Medicine is medicine if it's taken to address an imperfection that would otherwise cause greater distress.

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

This is the best use of a socially awkward penguin I've seen in a while.. I mean my. God. Also, mental health should be destigmatized.

2 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 1

Why is it any different than any other medicine? I take drugs for my diabetes. Don’t be mental health shamed.

2 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

What tiny octopus takes away from this is that you're prioritizing your mental health. Good on ya.

2 years ago | Likes 36 Dislikes 1

I am not in the position to give advice, but you two might consider to "own it" if the cat is already out of the bag. Many things people could stigmatize you for can become less powerful if you're the one in control of telling the story. Nobody knows your own condition as well as you do, so you might as well be the one educating them

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Who are these people operating without medication? Just rawdogging reality? F that.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Double down on it. Maintain eye contact without blinking for far longer than you should. Stand around corners and stare at people until they notice you. Start giving really weird compliments "I bet you have a really healthy liver! Doubt there'd be much fat on that thing!" Sit there reading a book with the book upside down.

I'm on anti psychotics as well, please be kinder to yourself. You're trying to give yourself a better quality of life and that's the sanest thing I can imagine.

2 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

You have nothing to be ashamed of 🌺
Psychosis isn't "insanity"; it's a manageable medical condition - just like insulin resistance, gout, depression or a broken bone.

Medicine is medicine - you're taking care of yourself.

It's like seeing Head & Shoulders in someone's bathroom. "Hey, I didn't know you had dandruff." "I don't have dandruff, cause I use Head & Shoulders." You are fine, because you take your meds.

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Those who matter don't mind and those who mind don't matter. To paraphrase Taylor Tomlinson, you need those pills to live so if people are more concerned that you take them than your general well-being, they don't care if you live or die. And people like that can go fuck themselves.
I hope your family accepts you and is supportive, though. Have an honest conversation with people, generally speaking knowledge brings understanding brings empathy. Best of luck.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

If they didn’t have a problem with you before they knew, why would they now?

You may have found some more people that can be a part of your support system!

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

You are managing your mental health, there is no shame in that.

My psychiatrist and I pretty much had this conversation this week. I did tell her I had been raw dogging life. She said “I hate that term, but it’s so accurate, isn’t it?”

2 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

EXACTLY!

I'm out here rawdogging reality because I'm too disorganized to make an appointment to get assessed for ADHD and be on my way to being medicated

I remember reading that there's 1 in 7 people on ADs in Australia, and I was like... Holy shit, that seems low.

For my whole life, up until about 6-7 years ago, I had so much pressure and stress and depression in my life.
There was so much misery and every accomplishment was soured by how it could have been better.
I avoided all medications and drugs because that felt like cheating and I should manage it all myself....
Then Muse released Something Human and, for whatever reason, it changed my life.
I still don't need to use substances, but I made the conscious effort to discard the stress and live happily

2 years ago | Likes 47 Dislikes 2

Every accomplishment soured by how it could have been better. Based on whose expectation? If it was your own be kinder to yourself.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Muse is awesome, for sure. :)

So much people were so proud to tell me they got off their meds, ect when I shared I take an SSRI. Good for them but also, it's OK to need and stay on them as well. Why would I make my life harder when this works.

2 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 0

as if the store-bought neurotransmitters were somehow inferior. Brain needs 'em, no matter the source.

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I have chronic insomnia, literally my whole life. I take meds to sleep, every night, and if I don't, because I've otherwise been getting sleep, I literally don't sleep a wink. It's a mental issue, but it manifests as a physical issue. I don't think anyone would tell me I'm somehow weak for needing meds to sleep. I mean, it's great if I can find some other solution, but I'm not desperate for one. Don't make your life harder. If it works, and you're following your Dr's recs, stick with it.

2 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

Doesn't sound like you are insane. It sounds like you - like me - have a chronic brain or mental condition that is treatable by drugs, just like diabetes or cancer or psoriatic arthritis. I let people around me - at work, family, friends - know that I'm OCD and ADHD and taking drugs for it. Just like someone with arthritis would explain their limits to their boss, say. My advice is, own it, stay on the meds, and figure out how you will deal with backwards people who freak out. Good luck!

2 years ago | Likes 43 Dislikes 0

"antipsychotic" is, ultimately, just a really unfortunately nuanced and stigmatized term. It doesn't mean what people think at all.

2 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 1

Exactly.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That right. I take an antipsychotic (quetapine) to help my insomnia caused by CPTSD. I used to take an epileptic medication for it as well (lamotregine).

They knew. They knew you before you were on the medication and the difference is noticeable.

My wife takes antipsychotics. As a result she's 110% more tolerable than all the rest of my family.

2 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 1

I feel like the people who don't take some kind of mental health medicine are the REAL crazies.

2 years ago | Likes 133 Dislikes 11

Genuine question, was your home life good growing up? Did you get on well with your family? I am calm and anxiety resistant to the point that some days I think I am some kind of autistic, but Im also the only person in my entire friend group who has dependable siblings I can trust and supportive, non-separated parents I get along extremely well with. I think the shockingly common amount of abusive/neglectful/shitty home lives/childhoods has done a number on people's mental state writ large.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

calm to the point that people think you have autism doesn't sound like the MOST mentally healthy thing I've ever heard, but yeah my home life was fine

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Chyeeaahh it’s me ya boy! No meds, no booze, no drugs! Just grinding my teeth out of alignment and doing breathing exercises so I can stand being here.

2 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

The fact that you feel this way is a real statement in itself.

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

homie, no one's brain was meant to live in capitalism or past the age of like 35. People need medicine to be alive, and so many people are afraid of getting help. So quit stigmatizing people taking care of themselves and getting the help they need.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Am I stigmatizing anything by noting that it is bizarre to feel that EVERYONE must have mental health issues? Really? It's okay to be healthy on your own too.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

No I am doesn't.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

I mostly just think it's insane we live in a world where we have to chemically trick our brain into acting right in the first place.

2 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

that's showbiz baby

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Just rawdogging reality here, not a med in sight. Though I'm aware and empathize with those that do take stabilizers and mood enhancers.

2 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

I am out here raw dogging reality and I have to say it's really.....fucking insane out here, wtf is going on?

2 years ago | Likes 51 Dislikes 1

It's real simple; were in the bad timeline. The one where at least one third are actively making it worse. You made a poor choice to be born.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

right?? CAPITALISM??? lol

2 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

Who just looks around at everything and is like "Yeah, this is fine"!?

2 years ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 3

I know this is a joke, but I'm not on any psych meds and I certainly don't look around and think everything is fine lol. Shits wild yo

2 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

I look around and say "this is not fucking fine and that fact that I know that is a pretty good indicator that my brain is functioning." I just deal with the emotions when they come up and then move on.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

No one but I don’t stress over things I can’t control and don’t affect me.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Nope, not fine, but I think of what life was like for my grandparents generation, and suck it up, and move on.

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 9

grandparents generation would either be the great depression, or WW2. if you defend bad shit based on that, your a shitty person.

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 4

Well, I grew up on their stories (1920s-30s). That left a big impression on me. There wasn't any aspect of their lives that wasn't tough. Of course they didn't think so, it was just life, but from my perspective, I just didn't see that I had a whole lot to (legitimately) gripe about. Defending bad shit? No. Just looking to provide a banana for scale as it were.

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 6

and then tell people they cannot demand better and need to "get over it". ie, defending bad shit. providing a banana for scale dosnt tell people that the elephant in the room is something to get over because the blue whle was bigger.

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 3

They deserved better and so do you.

2 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

The average life of a human has continually become better. The fact that someone in the past suffered more than you does not diminish your own suffering. Saying that "they had it worse" and then accepting the shit that universe is taking on you does not make you strong. Make life better for those coming after, and if possible, yourself

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Insane? You’re taking care of yourself… That’s the sanest thing you can do.

2 years ago | Likes 1212 Dislikes 3

This is true, but you can also take a little solace in the knowledge that essentially everyone is a little insane or broken in one way or another. Looking at the state of the world, it's not really much of a surprise either

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

This +1

2 years ago | Likes 128 Dislikes 1

This. People who need medication, who find decent doctors and follow their advice are far more sane than people who just take their internalised trauma and hurl it at their spouse kids or family.
Getting help and acting on it is a lot of work and shows you love yourself and your family.
I wish you the absolute best in a joy filled life.

2 years ago | Likes 44 Dislikes 0

This is absolutely the case. I have a number of mental health conditions and take various meds to keep functional. My immediate family all know, but when one of my aunts learned she was was surprised. Not in a bad way but in the "really? he seems so functional . . ." sort of way. I do wonder if that information helped to seek out help for her own anxiety and things as she did shortly thereafter.

Your family knowing you take the meds and knowing you may encourage others to get help too.

2 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

Yes ! Something I’ve heard before: your mental illness is not your fault, but it is your responsibility.

2 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

@OP I just had a very similar chat today with my insane friend today. Things like being aware of how you feel, taking your meds, not pushing away your friends/partner are so hard even though they sound simple and people without the same problem (ie neurotypical) just don't understand. It doesn't take away the embarrassment, but hopefully together you can educate and destigmatize your condition, even a bit. You're the same person, you just work differently and harder to function the same way.

2 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

absolutely this

2 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Yes, but it's always sad when your husband disappears after you take your meds.

Insane? I used to be Insane...

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Agreed!

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Yep! From another perspective, you're the only one of the group that they know is safe. The rest all may be untreated psychotics.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Cheers

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

They're only "half-crazy". Fully crazy people didn't think they're crazy.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'm not allowed to take my anxiety medication since my current employer has rules about hiring folks with depression and since anxiety meds are used by depressed people obviously I cannot take them... I friggin hate my job

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

That sounds illegal. Unless you’re flying planes and take benzos, I would look into your legal rights.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That said, I could probably fly a plane more safely after 0.5 mg lorazepam - if I could fly a plane.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I work on a train and trains in the US have their own set of laws. In this case, it's a safety thing where they don't want someone committing suicide on the train or with the train as it can get a lot of people killed

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Insanity is such a crude and inadequate word for what is really just a case of someone being neurological atypical. If a majority of people in a given society had ADHD, not having it would be the "condition".

2 years ago | Likes 56 Dislikes 5

I consider myself insane, not because my thought processes are faulty, but because I think in a way that's different from the majority of people. Mostly, because I am extremely self-aware of said thought processes and am capable of seemingly objective perspectives of myself.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

100% this. Also keep in mind that antipsychotixs are also used for other treatments as well! :)

2 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Yup. I always have a specific type on hand for random bouts of insane nausea! Went thru a ton of meds my first pregnancy to find one that worked. Turns out it's an antipsychotic med lol

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I'm glad you found something that worked! It can be an easy explanation in case of nosey in-laws and family! :D

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

"insane nausea" I see what you did there lmao

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

While there is a significant difference between ADHD and psychosis, those who suffer from psychosis are human beings going through a difficult situation who deserve empathy and respect.

2 years ago | Likes 25 Dislikes 0

Certainly, but if everyone experienced psychosis at the same frequency as OP then that would be the norm.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

This kinda makes it sound like people with ADHD don't also deserve empathy and respect but I'm about 98% sure that isn't what you meant.

I have one of those things and experienced a brief, mild bout with the other. It was really, really awful. Like wanting to peel my own skin off to be free of myself awful. Had it kept going I doubt I'd still be here.

2 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 2

You're right, that wasn't my intent. Everyone is entitled to compassion, empathy, and understanding as well as a minimum level of respect.
