#5 the very existence of the term "botched circumcision" is on its own more than enough reason to justify banning the practice.

10 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 1

Yep. Forcing an unnecessary, irreversible, surgery onto a nonconsenting person is unethical, immoral, and wrong.

10 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

So gender identity is NOT determined by upbringing and is in fact in born?

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 3

Poor David

10 years ago | Likes 26 Dislikes 1

I thought the same thing.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That is a sad case

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I saw a documentary about him on Netflix. Really interesting! But yes, very sad.

They made a movie based on The Wave, it's an interesting watch - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1063669/

not one that went wrong, but a study i found interesting is the Rosenhan experiment: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rosenhan_experiment

Isn't #3 one of the test sites from the Old World Blues DLC in Fallout New Vegas?

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The 3rd picture has nothing to do with the experiment. What the kids are doing is called a Bellamy salute. 1/?

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

This is how the Pledge of the United States of America was said pre-1940s. It was changed after that time for obvious reasons. 2/2

Every time this is posted I say the same thing the milgram experiment in no way went wrong and gave us great insight on authority

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

Yes! I always try to keep that in mind before blindly following authority.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That note of denial with the Milgram one: not perhaps, absolutely!

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

With a different hypotheses these would have been (questionably unethical but not for their time) psychological experiments gone right.

10 years ago | Likes 29 Dislikes 1

More than half are or these were terrible set up and executed, they should be used as examples of how not to set experiments

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

In grad school we studied a lot of these for this exact purpose

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I thought the Milligram experiment was considered successful and "gone right"?

10 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 0

It was useful and still referenced all the time, but wouldn't get through past any ethics board today.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It accomplished the task it was meant to do, but there were negative effects on the participants that weren't expected. Thus "gone wrong"

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The problems from the Milgram experiment helped to shape modern bioethics standards. Notably in the original experiment, when (1/?)

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

participants asked to stop the researchers pushed them to continue. There's now strict rules against that. Among other things (2/2)

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It was redone some what recently at UC Santa Barbara I believe.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It wouldn't have been allowed without strong modifications. Subjects have far better protection and rights in studies nowadays.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Definitely. It doesn't belong on this list.

10 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

The "gone wrong" part was it did psychological damage to the participants which wasn't expected.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

kind of.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

There's a movie over the Milgram Experiment. Can't find the sauce...

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Little known fact... the Milgram experiment was repeated later by actually torturing live puppies. They felt we had to be sure it was real.

I imagine puppies being shocked had little cognitive awareness of if it was "good shock" or "bad shock"...

Like qualifying, "Yes, I beat my wife, but not very hard and for a specific outcome so it's okay".

Also in the reimer case, they left out the part where he had a twin brother who remained male and dr money forced them to perform 1/2

sexual acts one one another and he too committed suicide. 2/2

The Stanford prison experiment should be considered invalid because of the demographic and sample size imo

10 years ago | Likes 42 Dislikes 1

The first 3 days nothing special happened, at which point one of the guards decided to spice things up. He started being a nazi to the 1/?

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

prisoners to try and "save" the experiment. The experiment does not prove people in power will abuse their power, but it does show that 2/?

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

it can happen, and that it only takes one asshole and some sheep (and society has plenty of both) . Source: talked to Zimbardo himself

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

most of these had terrible design, and their conclussion has been rejected.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

20 for 20 adopting the roll they were given is pretty indicative of the trend line.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It was a downright horrible experimental design. Zimbardo is held up as an expert because of the publicity, but it was a bit rigged.

10 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 0

Yeah, he actually told them to not be nice to the inmates.

you left out the tusk, oh its about ones gone wrong not just fucked up ones. okay, gotcha

Are we just gonna pretend that the first photo isn't from A Clockwork Orange?

10 years ago | Likes 249 Dislikes 3

Give em the old "in n' out"

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I actually clicked on this post only because the pic was from A Clockwork Orange but stayed b/c of good content

10 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 0

It is obviously from ACO, and it depicts a fictionalized version of an aversion therapy session, so it is a good proxy.

10 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 0

Apparently. I came down here to say the same shit

10 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

To be fair the description matches exactly the experiment in the movie, though the movie is about violence instead of homosexuality.

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

real horrorshow my lad, glad someone noticed it.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

And nothing to do with homosexuality. Even the phrase "As queer as a clockwork orange" came from a time when queer =/= gay.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Ludwig Van, my favorite composer

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Some of that good ol' ultraviolence.

10 years ago | Likes 39 Dislikes 0

Mk ultra violence would be a great band name.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

urge to puke rises

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Wasn't MK-ULTRA also known as Manchurian Candidate?

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

No. MK-ULTRA was basically the US attempting to achieve a similar effect as what the Chinese were reported to have done with brainwashing.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

"They can do X, we need to be able to do X too". Very common attitude during the cold war (and beyond...).

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Listening to the dulcet tones of Ludwig van Beethoven's Symphony 9 in D major.

#6 The affects of LSD are not dependant upon body weight. If you way 80bs or 600lbs, a couple tabs will send you sailing. Try again

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Lou Reed was given shock therapy to cure his homosexuality. It didn't work and he hates his parents.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

If anyone is interested in MK-ULTRA, I highly recommend the documentary Human Resources http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1891825/

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Homosexuality was not only depicted as a mental illness, it was classified as such.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

PSA: the GOP platform on healthcare would allow parents to get their kids to homosexual conversion therapy without consent of kid or doc.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

We are a fucked up race...

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 2

*species. all "races" have had their moments like this, and likely will again. "race" as used by the common man does not exist.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Regarding Millgram, there's some small comfort in that the participants overwhelmingly felt extreme stress and emotional duress when they

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

2. were compelled to keep delivering shocks. So I wouldn't say it shows "evil," just the effects of thoughtless reverence for authority.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Isn't there a novel similar to the third one?
