Look, if you've got multiple boys, then it's just a matter of survival that you pit them against eachother, because at a certain age all boys hit a stage where they become hyperfocused on, "taking down the old man". If they're divided then they'll only come at you one at a time, and you can put one in their place to strike fear into the others. But if they work together, then God help you. All this is doubly true for the non malicious sons just trying to make dad proud by showing their strength
