Please enlighten me: the sign says "Hippo Arena". What is that?

2 months ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

the entire thing is called "hippodrome", big party tent at the munich spring festival (lesser known than the octoberfest later in the year)...the "hippo arenas" are the lettered seating areas, we se I-J-K-L-etc in the clip...

The word "hippodrome" is derived from Ancient Greek hippódromos (Greek: ἱππόδρομος), a stadium for horse racing and chariot racing. The name itself is a compound of the words híppos (Greek: ἵππος), meaning "horse", and drómos (Greek: δρόμος), meaning "course". The ancient Roman counterpart was the circus. .. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hippodrome

The Hippodrom was a large Oktoberfest beer tent in Munich. Until the 1980s it was a horse riding arena with food and drink, hence the name. These tents often feature a gimmick like crossbow shooting so people have something to look at while getting shitfaced, and in case of the Hippodrom that gimmick was bare-legged women on horseback.

Hippo is latin for horse, so maybe it is a horse-themed section of the establishment?

2 months ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Good guess.

2 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I see horse head decorations in some shots

2 months ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

It is Greek for horse. Latin would be equus. Arena is Latin for Sand though. So it is a weird compound word.

2 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I stand corrected.

When I was a server at a banquet hall I used to regularly carry 150-200 lb trays of dirty dishes like that. Doesn't look like she weighs anywhere near that much, but definitely a more pleasant load than a bunch of dirty plates.

So like a full keg of beer's worth of weight (plus more) on your shoulder? Either you're a giant or bullshitting. Nowhere sane would allow that kind of dangerous work activity...

2 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

OK, I'm big and was, at the time, heavily into lifting weights, so yeah, kind of over the top. But it's not as hard as it seems, since you don't actually lift the weight with your arms, just your legs. Crouch, slide off the stand onto shoulder and hand. Stand up with it. Reverse at the dish room and slide into the pass-through. And "as much as you can lift" was normal in lots of work environments back then. Did it in construction too.
