I read a book about this when I was a very young teen. It's sat with me ever since, very uncomfortably. Now I'm dx'd AuDHD, hearing about how he wants to nix the ability for us to get stimulants, his treatment of addicts (who are commonly ND), etc. And it's very hard to not feel targeted. This wasn't the original use of those asylums - but it feels useless to point that out.

I used to work frontline in community mental health in NYS and involuntary civil commitment has existed for > 25 years but there were many safeguards against inappropriate use such that cops and EMTs were reluctant to act even some of my clients were floridly psychotic and imo, behaving in a manner that posed a danger to themselves or others. Being mentally ill, without home, or addicted to substances in and of themselves wouldn't meet criteria. But that was a different era when civil rights /

Go to Canada and bring them after. PRs can sponsor immigrants in Canada, it's a bit more paperwork but my boyfriend was able to sponsor his online friend and friend's wife recently. Not blood related, not a future sexual partner, just a guy he knew. Canada is actually pretty chill about chain migration as long as they're not disqualified for having a criminal history.
